Antonio Banderas plays the main character in the exciting and relative film, The 13th Warrior. The 13th Warrior shows many similarities to the story of Beowulf, sharing very similar features that are shown in both of these works. The film portrays the story of Ahmed ibn Fadlan, whom is portrayed by Antonio Banderas. Ahmed ibn Fadlan is a young Arab poet that is living in the area of Bagdad. He is a selfish poet that gets into some trouble by having an affair with the wife of an important citizen from his country, that goes by the name of Sultan. After getting into trouble he was to be banned from his country as a punishment. Getting exhiled places Fadlan in the precesnse of some Scandinavian men who happen to be Vikings. He saw the open land and different hardships that they had to endure throughout the journey. On the way to the kingdom he also learned the ways of Norse. The areas of Hrothgar are being attacked by a group of evil warriors that are referred as Wendol. The warriors arrive to the kingdom, led by the Viking leader, Buliwyf, and are feasted in the great hall. Wigliff, the son of Hrothgar fears that the warriors will take over the kingdom for their own if they beat the Wendol. That night in the great hall the Wendol enter and a great battle commences. Fadlan fights during this first war and kills one from the Wendel group. In the morning after the fight the warriors discover almost no signs of the Wendol remains. Followed by the warriors that he had left after the attack, Buliwyf set out to find out where the Wendol …show more content…
Throughout both stories, the scenes demonstrated slightly different ideas that shared the same meaning. The first example that I noticed that was shared between both stories, was the entrances of the story going into the areas in Scandonavia. The leader of the Viking warriors was named Buliwyf, which was very similar to and took the same position of Beowulf, who also led his warriors. The ruler in both stories is both named Hrothgar and there is evils that attack his kingdom are present in both stories. Even though these evils are not the same with them having different physical characteristics, they represent the same terrorizing evil. The warriors in both stories began their stay in the big halls of the villages, where they later met the great evils and had a great battle. Then after the battle there was the last battle with the leader and the mother of the evils, where they go travel to the home of the evil. Once they arrive to where the evil resides, they ensue in a great battle and later die while destroying the evil in the
Even though there are a lot of differences they also had a few similarities. One of them was the point that in the poem and movie Beowulf or Buliwulf died and they died as a king. They were similar to some of the characters, battles, events, and the terminations. The battle events of Beowulf and 13th Warrior are comparable. In both Beowulf and his followers seek for an entrance into the monster’s home to kill the mother and Wendol or Grendol seek for Buliwylf location as well. They both ended with Wendol and his mother dyeing. In conclusion Buliwylf or Beowulf died as a king.
There are a few scenes in “The 13th Warrior” that are comparable to scenes in Beowulf. When Ahmed and his men were attacked by the bear men in the small hut, they fought for a while and the bear men fled back into the night to their cave. This scene is correspondent to when Beowulf defeated Grendel in the mead-hall. Grendel fled back into the night, down to his cave under the hellish waters of the lake. After these scenes in Beowulf and “The 13th Warrior” another event takes place that is much like each other. Beowulf is asked to find Grendel’s mother and slay her as well. He searches for hours in the lake until he is snatched by her and is carried to her cave. Beowulf slaughters her here. In “The 13th Warrior” Ahmed and his comrades murdered the bear men’s mother, just as
Heroes bring a hope to people whom they protect. Heroes bring people joy and bring a sense of relaxation to the people of their society because they play such an important role in lives everywhere. Heroes are complex rather than unembellished because they can fight dragons to defend their kingdom, or create a non-profit foundation to enhance the quality of life for more than 2,000 underprivileged kids. Heroes in our present day can be very complex because a person’s viewpoint on a hero’s life can be a completely different than the way another person looks at that same hero. Thomas Davis Sr. can be extremely comparable to Beowulf but they also have major differences.
Throughout history the traditional heroic elements have changed because of our society. Although elements of a hero have changed there are also certain characteristics of a hero that stays the same, such as a hero’s character and courage. This can be seen through Beowulf , “ The Epic and the Epic Hero,”and the movie “The 13th Warrior.”
Anglo-Saxons refers to settlers from the German regions that migrated to Britain during the fall of the Roman Empire. In the story Beowulf, his actions portray him, indeed be an epic hero. Both Christianity and Paganism are both portrayed throughout the epic Beowulf. Beowulf frequently speaks of God throughout the story, while there are also many Pagan elements that are evident throughout the story as well. In addition, "It 's hard to ignore the Christian and Pagan elements in Beowulf. These types of elements are what define the heroic warrior in the epic Beowulf"(Vengeance the Pagan and Christian Inspiration). Throughout the epic Beowulf, while the Anglo-Saxons followed Christianity, they had a hard time letting go of the Pagan beliefs when things got hard.
Heroes, from Beowulf to Superman our cultures have always created heroes. We may always have political, social, economic and religious differences, but at the end of the day we all have one thing in common, heroes. They help define who we are and what we want to be. They give us hope and inspire us to head in the right direction. They show us that good will always triumph over evil and that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Heroes give us the inspiration we need to overcome problems in our own lives and that is why we create them. Beowulf perfectly embodies the idea of a hero. He defeats the evil Grendel and his mother, slays the dragon and saves his people. He is
In comparison to Grendel’s mother, a cannibal woman who is worshipped by the rest of the tribe, is the mother of the Wendol. The warriors in The 13th Warrior travel down into the Wendol’s den to kill the mother, similarly to Beowulf‘s victory over Grendel‘s mother. Just as Beowulf was forced to defeat Grendel’s mother alone, so does Buliwyf in The 13th Warrior. The third and final battle of Beowulf is with a dragon.
The first example of similarities and differences in the movie and poem demonstrates the behavior of a hero. In both the movie and poem, Beowulf is portrayed as the same vicious monster that protected his people. He stopped at nothing to save his people from Grendel and his mother. When he overheard that Hrothgar needed his help, he didn't hesitate to lend a helping hand. In the poem, Beowulf was seen as someone that everyone looked up to because he was honest.
Beowulf and The Iliad are both famous works of literature that have been studied for hundreds of years. Both Beowulf and Achilles are great heroes in their Epics. An important component of these Heroic Epics are their heroes and their how the act. Beowulf always exhibits the traits that would make him an epic hero, and would never do anything dishonorable or that wasn not for the benefit of everyone around him, while Achilles had moments that made him look dishonorable and not heroic. Overall, Beowulf is the better hero because he never gave up and fought for God, while Achilles refused to fight and disrespected Greek traditions such as respecting fallen foes.
Mythology was a very big thing in ancient times, issuing to times before B.C and still continues to this day. This dates back to times of beowulf, which was during the middle ages and anglo/saxon time period which was believed to be the earliest recorded stage of english, spoken in britain.A big wealth of literature and poetry was written during this specific time period and led to a gateway to germanic philology.Even though that was extravagant and intriguing it is really outdated considering this is now the 21 century where we rely on technology and reboots of books and poems into movies from that time period. As one of them is the 13th warrior which is supposed to tie into or relate to anglo/saxon timed poem “beowulf” the author is unknown but it has been translated many times by different
The 13th Warrior a 1999 fantasy film produced by Touchtone Pictures, is based on the book Eater of the Dead by Michael Crichton. This film has quite a few similarities and differences when it is compared to the epic poem of Beowulf. The 13th Warrior is about a group of heroes around the 10th century, who were summoned to the Northmen lands to stop some inhuman monsters (0:00:42) and Beowulf written in the 8th century, is also about a hero summoned to the Northmen lands to stop some inhuman monsters. In the film, it follows thirteen men and their struggles to fight off the monsters, but in the poem even though Beowulf had the help of fourteen Danes, it was mainly about Beowulf’s trials and successes. The film’s story changes the arrangement of the poem’s plot, but the central idea is predominant in both works, which is the need for an epic hero to save the peoples from supernatural monsters. The characters in both the film and the epic poem, are presented with different names, motives, and appearances. The 13th Warrior and the poem Beowulf have similarities and differences that are shown through its characters, plot, and central idea.
The epic poem Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney, presents two heroic kings that have very clear differences on how they overcome challenges but they still keep their people in safe keepings. Hrothgar and Beowulf are admired by their people because they both show strong characteristics of what an Anglo-Saxon king should do or be.
In the poem Beowulf and Sir Gawain the Green Knight the main characters show signs of being a hero. They both have the characteristics of a hero but they show it in different ways. In my opinion, they both have warrior and knight like qualities. For example, they both have courage and bravery as one of their characteristics. Also, they both show that they have leadership and they are loyal to their believing and to the people. However, they both different because they didn’t face the same challenges in their adventures. In Beowulf, there are three dangerous creatures that attacked the kingdoms but in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, there is nothing dangerous in the poem it is only told that the Green Knight, was dangerous and evil but he was no real threat. Their situations are different from one another and they had to solve in a way they know how to. In this essay, I will explain the similarities and differences in how their behavior reveals the Anglo-Saxon and Chivalric Code.
There are really two traits that are clearly the same between these two heroes. The first is they both are brave and never shy away from danger. An example would be when Beowulf knows he
The universal theme of good versus evil is portrayed in Beowulf, through the locations of the major battles. Beowulf, the epic hero, combats Grendel and Grendel’s mother in Heorot Hall and the under-water cave, respectively. The settings behind these fatal conflicts serve to reinforce the Christian and Germanic notions of good and evil. The Christian perspective is overtly demonstrated through references to the Lord and to Cain, while the Germanic perspective is evident through the speech and actions of characters. Through both religious and cultural lenses, the settings behind Beowulf’s heroism are better understood. The differences in the symbolism behind Heorot Hall and the cave reinforce the overarching conflict between good and evil in Beowulf.
