A young white man growing up in the Southern United States in the twentieth century witnesses rampant racial prejudice condoned by political political officials and the law. A young girl growing up in Pakistan in the early twenty-first century experiences similar discrimination herself when the Taliban takes over much of the nation. Despite being of different backgrounds, Jimmy Carter, a devout Christian who grew up in the Deep South, and Malala Yousafzai, a devout Muslim from Pakistan, both promote and spread an idea of equality amongst all individuals. Both mention that religious leaders distort and misinterpret holy books to suit their purposes. Carter and Yousafzai witness prejudice and violence against oppressed groups firsthand. They endorse an idea of peace, saying that an acceptance of violence is prevalent and problematic in society. In addition, both take efforts in an attempt to improve the world and solve the problem of violence against women. Jimmy Carter’s beliefs and efforts as stated in the excerpt from A Call to Action resonate with Malala Yousafzai’s in I Am Malala.
The two well-known figures speak out against misleading propaganda promoted by unscrupulous religious leaders. Carter believes that “male religious leaders … distort … sacred texts to perpetuate their claim that females are, in some basic ways, inferior to them, unqualified to serve God on equal terms” (1).
