During the Civil War, there were two remarkable men, Abraham Lincoln and Nathan Bedford Forrest. Both of them had a struggling childhood, growing up poor and received no formal education. Lincoln and Bedford Forrest had chosen a different path, Lincoln is a self-taught lawyer while Bedford Forrest was a lieutenant general in the Civil War and before the war Forrest was a fortune amassed a planter and real estate investor and a slave trader. It would be wrong to say that, in fact, Nathan Bedford Forrest is not recognized as a prominent figure in history. He was raised in a very poor home with no money and no form of education to his name. In 1842, when Nathan was just twenty-one, he moved his family to Hernando, Mississippi. He went into the planting trade and within ten years, Nathan had made himself into a successful businessman with enough capital to allow him and his family to live a rather comfortable life. As soon as the war broke out, Forrest did not hesitate to offer his services, for he was a firm believer in the doctrines of the Confederacy. Early in 1861, Forrest was enlisted in the Tennessee mounted rifles, but he truly desired to rise through the ranks into fame.
