Nathan Bedford Forrest: The Outbreak Of The Civil War

James McPherson was born on October 11th 1936, he is an American Civil War historian. He received the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for Battle Cry of Freedom, his most famous book. McPherson was the president of the American Historical Association in 2003, and is a member of the editorial board of Encyclopedia Britannica. In his early career McPherson wanted to leave a legacy as being known for the historian who focusses on more than one point. Through skillful narrative in a broad-ranging oeuvre of essays and books, McPherson has succeeded in telling both stories, combining social, political, and military history to reach a broad scholarly and popular audience, emphasizing all the while that the Civil War constituted a “second American Revolution.” Examining thousands of letters and diaries written by soldiers to gather a better insight and understanding, McPherson argued that deep political and ideological convictions about liberty, slavery, religion, and nation were the fundamental reasons that men on both sides enlisted and fought. McPherson’s views on the Civil War are broad in comparison to many other writers, he believes there are multiple causes to the war but that the underlying cause was slavery and that Southern states used the saying “States’ Rights” to justify their actions of slavery and secession. Soldiers of the American Civil War were overwhelmed by a time where weaponry and technological developments were thriving. This brutal war changed the soldiers, both mentally and physically, and continued to have an impact throughout their entire lives. There were not only many deaths during the war, but also prior to the war as many soldiers took their own life. They would experience disturbing thoughts and events in their mind that could not be explained until they became known as mental illnesses. The exploration of psychological disorders following the Civil War improved medical diagnostic tools and the way patients were treated which transformed the treatment of mental illness by creating new ways of discovering illnesses, treating patients, and developing the foundation for the future of psychology throughout America.

Thesis: As the debate continues on whether or not we should keep confederate monuments and symbols displayed publicly, it is important that we recognize both the benefits and downfalls of removing these symbols.

The war produced about 1,030,000 casualties, including about 620,000 soldier deaths—two-thirds by disease, and 50,000 civilians. The war accounted for roughly as many American deaths as all American deaths in other U.S. wars combined.

Before the Civil War started, the North and the South argued on two main topics: slavery and state rights. In my opinion, it was because of slavery that state rights were argued. When Western territories were annexed from Mexico, they were admitted to the Union with the condition that that slavery be banned through the Wilmot Proviso (History.com). The Civil War is known as a turning point in America, the road to ending slavery, while first turning a nation against each other.

The date was June 28th, 1861. On this day, Jefferson Davis Tant was born to William and Mattie Tant of Paulding County, Georgia (Tant 16-17). His namesake was derived from the Confederate president who had presided over one of America’s bloodiest conflicts: the Civil War (17). Merely two months and sixteen days before, this war had officially begun. Shortly thereafter, Tant’s father, William, heeded the call of the Confederacy and left his family behind to fight against the Union armies (17-18). Three years later, the war had reached Tant’s home in northern Georgia. The homestead that he had labored to establish there was destroyed five days before the Battle of New Hope Church occurred, leaving his wife and three young sons to fend for themselves amid a hostile environment (12-15).

Two sides of a country fighting for full control war ends now its just reconstruction but who stops it. The North was a free side but the south wasn't. They both ended into going into war with each other the north side stayed an won. So then there needed to be reconstruction in the south. It started fine but then it all stopped why. Who killed the rebuilding of the U.S colonies? The side who killed the reconstruction of the U.S was the South due evidence of cruelty because of a lost wasr and the issue of the freed slaves, not saying the North had little to do with it but the South was the main reason for stopping reconstruction.

One such story that was told by Lincoln concerned his desire not to pursue Jefferson Davis near the conclusion of the Civil War. Lincoln, through the use of this story, was able to relate to his general that while he agreed in principle that his object should be to pursue and capture the president of the confederate states; it would not be such a horrible thing if Davis was allowed to escape, “unbeknownst-like” (Phillips, 1993; p.61). Lincoln, already known for his compassion and hesitancy to use capital punishment against spies and deserters, realized that if Davis was captured he must be hanged for treason. The Civil War was a struggle for leadership between the Northerners and Southerners as the later tried to agitate for secession from the union. Most Americans believe that the Civil war began as a result of slavery or it led to the end of the latter but these are misunderstood episodes of the American History. According to James Illingworth, the civil war began as a result of the Southerners continued quest for the end of the American Union and the fight for states’ rights contrary to the general political leanings on the issue of slavery (Illingworth). The connection between civil war and slavery was the willingness of the slaves to fight for their masters in both divides in exchange for freedom.
