Most of you would have said Manchester United vs Liverpool. Yes, the two teams are considered the biggest rivals in not just English football but club football on whole. With Manchester United set to take on Liverpool in the round of-16 in the Europa League, we take a look at what has happened to the Champions League regulars. Manchester United under David Moyes finished 7th on the table. Under Louis Van Gaal, they managed a top four finish but did not play great football. David De Gea was their saviour for the majority of the season. In the current season, Manchester United have not been very convincing either. Their football has not been the best and has also been termed as ‘Boring’ by most of the fans. Despite signing top quality players like Bastian Schwiensteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial they have yet again been average. Liverpool on the other hand have never been at their best since the 1990s barring a Champions League victory and a close second place in 2013-14 season of the Premier League. With both the clubs not performing at their best, the fixture is now of lesser importance and more worryingly, of lower quality of football. United had a great start to the season whereas Liverpool did not. Manager Brendan Rodgers was struggling to keep his job safe. After a below average first half that lacked intensity and quality, Manchester United took the lead in the second half of the game through Daley Blind. Herrera doubled it from the spot before Benteke’s overhead kick brought Liverpool back into the game. United’s new signing Anthony Martial scored a brilliant goals to confirm the 3 points for Manchester United in what was an entertaining second half. Despite the good second half, both the teams showed signs of falling standards of football in the first half. In the latest fixture, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side lost 1-0 to Manchester United in a below average game of football. Manchester United who did not have a shot on target till the 79th Minute scored a shabby goal through Wayne Rooney. Liverpool on the other hand had played good football but were unlucky in front of goal. Manchester United were saved yet again by David De Gea’s heroics in what was a below par performance. The majority of the game saw unproductive football from both sides. The game lacked intensity and passion.
