As I read chapter from Weston’s book I get a better understanding of whom Weston actually is. Weston brings up a brilliant way of tackling ethical issues. I believe that the concept of open mindedness that Weston has mentioned is a staple that all humans should have and practice. Having an open mind means to weigh out both side of a story. You have to spend the time to understand your opposition’s point of view. You can’t be quick to make a decision purely on instinct. Sam Harris's ideas differ from Weston's in many different ways. their core beliefs are contradicting. In contrast to Sam Harris, who believer that there is always a right or wrong to any situation. Weston believes that the outcome shouldn’t be based on right or wrong but what
I agree with the author’s main message of making tough decisions through ethical thinking. Having ethics such as core values allow people to differentiate right from wrong, and these choices that people make can be categorized as ethical dilemmas or
In his writing, A Practical Companion to Ethics, Anthony Weston explains people are more judgmental and it causes a lot more problems than solutions. Anthony Weston feels Ethics requires us to be mindful thinkers, because it helps fight unjust prejudgment. I personally feel this could help fix court systems, federal, and state wide corruption. Most importantly being a mindful thinker could help businesses. There are so many reasons that could fall under Anthony’s theory. Getting to know the author and his work. I feel his mindful thinking is to reach out to others and interact with more people in an expressive way. Weston believes this will help our community progress in a positive manner towards others. I think he feels ethics requires us
This links in with justice as what one person defines as absolute and correct may seem completely irrational to another person, much like how Wes Hayden, Frank’s brother, believes his brother is wrongdoing while Frank believes his crimes are somewhat justified.
Many different factors play into Wes’ decision making when it comes to right and wrong. These factors obscure the clear path to take when deciding the fate of Uncle Frank. These three factors are Wes’ sense of loyalty, his obligation to the law, and his prejudice towards Indians. The sense of right vs. wrong is complicated (problematized) by Wes’ sense of loyalty, his obligation to the law, and his prejudice towards Indians.
In chapter ten, Weston talks about Judging Like Cases Alike. Honestly when I read the introduction paragraph one word popped into my head, “Hypocritical”. Now I can’t say whether or not this is what Weston was trying to say without saying it but that is what I took it to mean. He gives an example of him selling his car, should he misrepresent his car in order to sell it because it is the buyer’s job to get the car checked themselves? Or is that wrong. First off, I’m an honest person and I tend to have a pretty big conscience, but I don’t see how you could misrepresent your car and not think about if someone did that to
Every day we are faced with certain situations that challenge us with how to act in an ethical manner. It can be human nature to feel unsure or conflicted with the correct moral choice. Some can say that one should know how to handle such dilemmas and others may say that there should be a reference of some sort to help guide through such conflicts. Sometimes we know the answers and sometimes we are unsure of how to handle certain situations. Most times we go through life wondering what we should do. As I become further educated on the different theories of ethics, I believe there are answers that are available in guiding one through an ethical dilemma and or judgment. I will discuss Vincent Ruggiero’s three basic criteria, Robert Kegan’s order of consciousness, the three schools of ethics and the correlation between all three.
Moral choices in TKAM are seemingly more relevant than those of The Chosen however, playing a larger role and occurring more often in day to day life. Throughout TKAM the characters are forced to make choices such as, risking their life for someone else’s, helping someone who is despised by the community, and backing down instead of lashing out. All of these important decisions occur during today’s era and this book gives important insight on how to decide what to do when faced with said decisions. The Chosen includes many of these decisions as well, yet the characters are faced with them in a more foreign situation than that of the characters In TKAM. All of these moral decisions faced by the characters in the novel would not be nearly as meaningful if the reader were not able to connect with the characters and understand their thought
The bravest of people are those who follow their conscience. John’s character in Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave New World is one prime example of an individual that uses his idea of morality to influence his decisions and in doing so stray away from the unethical society described in the novel. This statement can be true in the real world today as well as often times those who stand up for what they believe in are shunned or challenged. In the novel, John the Savage constantly challenges immoral actions from the time he enters dystopian London through the conclusion of the story.
“When we make an ethical judgment, we must extricate ourselves from the emotions of a particular situation to look at the matter objectively” (Robison & Reeser, 2002, p. 22-23). Although in an ideal
Edward Weston was born March 24th, 1886, he was from Highland Park Illinois. He is known as a major photographer from the early to mid 20th century. His style of carefully composed and thought out images, focused on sharp details of natural forms, landscapes and nudes. Edward Weston was a complex man. Often portrayed as a philanderer, a consummate Don Juan with a camera, he was much deeper and caring: a respectful son, a caring brother, a loving husband. A doting, proud, and engaging father, the real Edward Weston was a man whose philosophy of life, art, and love were inseparable. His world, often overly egocentric, was one built in passion, enthusiasm, and love.
After reading Weston, “Getting Started,” “Beyond Authority,” and “Ethical Theories,” I have a clear understanding on what Weston means when stating ethics is a learning experience. Ethics is a learning experience that starts from the moment you are born. Your family instills in you basic morals from the moment you can comprehend rights from wrongs. Derived form roots of ethics Utilitarianism, states that an action is morally right if the majority believes so. Even evil motives can be can be considered acceptable if its for the over all-good. This what I believe Weston was talking about. As each culture in the world has secular bias on how things should operate. What is considered right and wrong, depends of what society deems is right or wrong.

Reading Blind Spots gave me an insight into my own self perceived vision of ethics. What I mean by this is, the text opened my eyes to bounded ethicality and how every day I am faced, without always knowing, with ethical dilemmas and decisions. The book introduced me to various patterns in bounded ethicality, revealing what these obstacles are while also giving assistance on how to go about identifying and correcting these sometimes-unknown ethical situations. Two patterns that I will focus on from the text include, the two systems of decision making and the “want self” and “should self” of ethical thinking. These patterns helped in enlightening my perception towards bounded ethicality and how to overcome ethical obstacles that lay ahead.
Ethics has developed as people have reflected on the intentions and consequences of their acts. From this reflection on the nature of human behavior, theories of conscience have developed, giving direction to much ethical thinking. Each individual
