Compare And Contrast The Roman Empire And The Han Dynasty

Han China and Rome are actually very similar in their geographical conquests. First of all, both civilizations were the largest and most expansive in their areas. Rome stretched from Spain, England, and France to Mesopotamia and North Africa. The Han dynasty expanded to Korea, china, and central Asia. These huge areas allowed a feeling of power and more economic stability, but also had a few downfall's. Even though the Roman Empire had close to 60 million people in the lands, the population began to dwindle by the end of its empire, they could no longer supply enough people to protect its borders, so they had to turn to outside sources for its military. These outside sources had distrusting loyalties, so, Rome’s borders were not so well protected and eventually fell to complete invasion. Han Dynasty fell to its fate. Both the Han Dynasty and the Roman Empire's weakened so much that they both crippled under the weight of outside invasions. A huge difference between the two civilizations, however, was their level of isolation. On a broader scale, however, Han China and Imperial Rome had much difficulty managing their empires and protecting their borders from attack. Some causes of problems for both civilizations arose from very long borders that were far away from the capital and slow communication, which meant that notice of attacks on the borders could take days or weeks to reach the capital before help could be deployed. To address this, both civilizations built walls to protect their borders, such as Hadrian’s Wall in central England and the Great Wall of China in Western China, and they also stationed small garrisons at outposts to protect against wandering marauders. However, this action led to an economic depression in both empires because of the high cost of maintaining the outposts and barriers. Both Rome and China had an effective way of managing their growing empires initially, but as they continued to expand it eventually contributed to their downfall.

The Han Dynasty and the Roman Empire were two grand empires that rose out of preexisting territories and provided relative peace over wide areas. Verifications of this can be seen when Rome fully realized the potential of arches and bridges in their road systems that spanned more than 400,000 km of roads that were used for trade. Correspondingly, they also built aqueducts as a form of water engineering to constantly bring in a flow of water to the cities and towns. Similarly, Han China built massive fortified roadways for trade and walls for fortification comparable to the Great Wall of China as a means of defense. Also in comparison to Roman aqueducts, Han China built water canals as means to direct water as they pleased. These similarities defined their engineering skills as these inventions and constructions were used to help strengthen their economies. Rome built and constructed roads to aid their trade systems and make easier routes of travel. Furthermore, they used aqueducts to get water into the city saving money and the need for human labor. Similarly, Han China used their fortified roads to trade much easier and as a means of safer travel. This went hand in hand with China’s water canals that also aided their economy by directing water where needed saving much money and limiting the need for human labor as well.

In terms of construction, the Romans and Han in China had similar constrictions in terms of roads, bridges and the development of water systems. This helped in strengthening their economies. The roman had road systems which expanded more than 400,000 km and they used them in order to carry out trading activities (Rosenstein). The roman had built aqueducts in their engineering systems which brought a constant flow of water to the various cities and towns. Similarly, Han in China built massively fortified roads for the sake of trading and walls for the sake of fortification. The Great Wall of China was a proof of the existence of the Han dynasty and their form of defense.

The Roman Empire is still known today as one of history’s most powerful period. Rome government had stick rules and policies. The Roman government at this point was known as the Roman Republic. The Roman Republic was controlled by the roar Rome. Bureaucracy was ran throughout the region, but Rome did not want this nor could they afford it. However, they did allow small cities to run a lower level of government. The exercise of indirect rule thus became a basic principle of imperial government. The business of local administration and jurisdiction was delegated to the existing communities of city or tribe. This type of structure was deemed to be a weakness to some historians because of the consequences. Consequences that allow a third level government to enforce the emperor’s rules. Because of the expansion of the territory, this was the only reasonable way for it to function normally. The empire was a "commonwealth of cities" which acted as economic and cultural of the Roman world and were integrated into the administrative system as local foci of government. This imperial ruling was first implemented by Rome. It came about because of social trends and not the Roman strategic policies that was often changed by Romanized upper class citizens. These upper classman brought about firmness throughout the land with their strategic and educated planning.

Each empire has its own unique strengths and differences that aid in their emergence, growth, and decline. While there are many differences between empires, there are fundamental similarities that are common throughout every society. The Han, Mauryan, and Roman Empires all have different strengths and differences, but are fundamentally the empires are similar in their primary doctrines.

The walls surrounding it were there to protect the city against the Goths and Huns, who had captured Rome already. These walls were able to hold off those trying to invade for almost one thousand years.   In 221 BCE the Qin Dynasty build several roads, palaces, and other architecture, they also build a wall, not just any wall a colossal wall that could surround far more than a city.  After a while they were overthrown by the Han dynasty,  they fell into Qin’s footprints, and build a wall to keep the Xiongnu (mongols)out.   The recipe for the perfect wall called for a frame that was 30’ long, 25’ wide and 20’ high, use dirt that was 6”-8” ft.

The Great Wall is made out of a series of wall that “were built to increase security, impress visitors and enhance the glory of China” (Background Essay). People in the cities were always frightened by the idea of the Mongols invading China. However, the wall prevented this from happening due to the amount of people “selected to settle along the border areas permanently” (Document B). The people that were selected were to remain there incase of invasion. Due to the brilliant idea of the wall Chinese people were able to continue their lives in peace.

The Roman and Han Empires were among the greatest empires in history. The Han prospered in 202 BCE - 220 C.E and the Roman Empire in 27 BCE- 476 C.E. By the early second century CE, Rome controlled the entire Mediterranean coastline and had to use military force to set up borders against their adversaries, the Huns. During the Han, colonies were established in Korea and military campaigns were mounted in order to control their neighbors, the Xiongnu. Both of these empires had similar rises by using strong military power and expansion, which helped them both strive in economic trade. Although there are many similarities in the reasons that contributed to the rise of these empires, there are also several contrasting reasons for their decline. These two empires differ because Rome allowed plague to end their empire while the Han kept ruling.
