In the play Macbeth and the book Animal farm, the idea of power is well presented by Shakespeare and Orwell. In which both lead to the key protagonists gaining complete power, and it leading to complete corruption. Macbeth was written between 1603-1606. It was written to please the newly throned King James IV of Scotland. This is evident in the play as Shakespeare shows regicide would have been feasible, but unthinkable to the Jacobean audience, who had lived through the gunpowder plot aimed at targeting King James. Such acts were a concern of that time. Shakespeare is giving a clear message that such acts will only lead to self destruction. In comparison Animal farm, an algory for the Russian revolution was written by George Orwell in 1945. Animal farm follows the role of Stalin in the set of a farm in England. Orwell does this to show that communism like the communism observed in the Russian revolution can happen anywhere. …show more content…
Macbeth is brave and therefore belived he can gain total power from the beginning. Macbeth is described by Duncan and the Captain as “brave friend” and “Brave Macbeth”. Shakespeare uses repetition of “brave” to emphasise that Macbeth is well thought of. Because Shakespeare shows Macbeth as brave and is seen as well thought of, it enables him to gain power. Unlike Animal Farm Macbeth does not gain ambition, he already has this trait and it is in fact his hamartia. Where Macbeth gains realisation that he can be king from the 3 witches telling him about how he will one day be king, “thou shalt be king herafter”. This is where he realised he can be king and starts his climb to the top. Shakespeare shows us that Macbeth wants power because he says “I have no spur to prick the sides om my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself and falls on the other”. Shakespeare uses the word ambition here as it clearly shows that Macbeth has a strong desire to have

Macbeth's ambition is what allowed him to become powerful. Without ambition, it is impossible to achieve goals. Therefore, ambition is what allowed Macbeth to overcome his obstacles and come closer to his final goals. As soon as he developed the trait of vaulting ambition, Macbeth is able to make his life fall into place exactly the way he wants it to. He first murders Duncan so that he will become king. Macbeth's ambition is directly the cause of this tragic incident. This murder is in cold evil blood by Macbeth's own hand; at this point he starts seeking his future on his own and will overcome any obstacles in his
The greatest factor to Macbeth’s downfall should be attributed to his blind, uncontrollable ambition. This factor is first seen with the second appearance of the witches, upon which they meet Macbeth. Macbeth’s first thought to the prophecy “All hail, Macbeth, thou shalt be king hereafter!” (1.3.63) is he must murder the king. This thought provides the groundwork in which Macbeth can seed his
In the beginning, the audience and the characters all see Macbeth as a righteous brave warrior. First, when the captain explains to Duncan that during their battle against the Thane of Cawdor, Macbeth and his friend Banquo are " as sparrows eagle, or the hare the lion"(I.ii.39"). The captain is comparing Macbeth to an eagle who fights a sparrow, or a lion fighting a hare, this shows how he is a great strong and righteous opponent because he was fighting for the noble King Duncan, and because he was such a strong fighter he is compared to a lion fighting a weak hare. However, this bravery is shifted to his ambition from his desire of power. Thus, the audience starts to understand Macbeth's ambitions when he starts to want more dominance than he currently has. He compares himself to a horse as he thinks the only thing he has is his “Vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself”(I.vii.27). This comparison shows how a noble creature is corrupted by his ambition This shows Macbeth’s personality, and how he may start to develop now that he understands that part of himself. Shortly after, his
Initially, Macbeth’s emotional and physical journey begins with the prophecy that the three witches had told Macbeth about. Once the witches tell Macbeth that he will become the future king, his ambition become prominent as it is shown in the same scene as the witches when Macbeth says “Why do I find myself thinking about murdering king Duncan?” (21). So, right after the witches tell Macbeth that he will become king he already has this ambitious feeling of needing that power and doing whatever it takes to get it. However, at this point in the book Macbeth still is fighting the urge of wanting that power. To continue, in the next scene Macbeth finds himself becoming more consumed by the thought of becoming king that while with
He starts to think if whether or not to believe if he will be king. Which he himself knows how much that place of taking the throne is so valuable for him to be sitting as king. Macbeth’s ambition is defined as strong and able to desire to achieve something. This is also in Lady Macbeth during the whole play.
In lots of stories, there is character development. In certain cases of character development, the characters change because of certain things like power desire. Like in Lord of the Flies Jack one of the main boys in the book changes into an evil character craving the desire for power. He takes advantage of the young kids and uses them to take over and create a new tribe. While Ralph the other main boy in trying to run away from being hunted. That shapes him into his role into the whole story line. Also, like in Macbeth the main character, Macbeth, is changed because of a fortune told to him about his future. In that fortune, it is said he will be king, but his ally, Banquo, son’s will be kings after him. This turns Macbeth into a mad man thinking that his place will be taken by Banquo. So this sacredness and these expectations of being king drives him into being what he is in the book.
Macbeth displays ambition by the way he talks and his actions over the course of the play. Ambition is a strong desire to do or achieve something that takes hard work and dedication. In the play Macbeth, Macbeth has strong desire to be successful out on the battlefield and also in his pursuit to take over as king. Macbeth’s ambition is detrimental to himself and that is shown throughout the play. Macbeth’s strong desires and aspirations end up hurting him after all and the bad things he had done eventually catch up to him.

People are the way they are due to many elements. Where they live, who they are surrounded by, and life experiences that they encounter are all factors that plays a role in who they are as a person. Although humans can be very different from one another, humans can also be similar in other ways. No matter what background someone has or how well they are doing financially, there are two things that all humans have. Ambition and desire. Playwright, William Shakespeare, introduces several characters who are willing to take unimaginable risks to obtain success to their desires in his famous play, Macbeth. Characters Scar from The Lion King and Macbeth are fine examples of characters who are unable to stop their ambition and desire from taking impulsive actions. Scar and Macbeth are similar characters as they are both with a corrupt mindset as shown through their treatment of others, and their betrayal towards those who are loyal to them.
Once Macbeth possessed the power of being Thane of Cawdor he began to exhibit more greed. He has just been given such a huge responsibility and once he was given new power, he craved more; especially when he stumbled upon the witches. He liked the power that he had and wanted to gain more, no matter what he has to do to get it. Macbeth had an encounter with the three witches and they had told him that he will become the next king. Although the witches did say this it did not mean that it was certain, it was just a possibility. But when Macbeth realized the opportunity for power he knew he wanted to become the king. This passage was in part of the letter that Macbeth wrote to Lady Macbeth: “Whiles I stood rapt in the wonder of it came missives from the King, who all-hailed me ‘Thane of Cawdor,’ by which title, before, these Weird Sisters saluted me and referred me to the coming on of time with ‘Hail, king that shalt be’” (1.5.6-10). . It seems as if the power and greed now had full control over him, he is doing things that he wouldn’t do when he did not have all this power. This is the first time that we see this side of Macbeth, the side of him that is greedy for power and is willing to kill the king to do so. In the beginning of the play the thought of being Thane of Cawdor never even crossed his mind, and by no means being
