Food is a major part of every culture, some very different and some very similar. American and Spanish cultures are very different because of eating habits, meal times, and how people interact over food. There are several differences between American and Spanish food, but there is one similarity: it brings people closer together like nothing else. In Spanish cultures, traditionally, there were four to five meals per day; but because of immigration, people eat the normal three meals. For breakfast, coffee, sweet rolls, and eggs are commonly eaten. At lunch, the most important meal of the day, the most common foods are soup, meat, rice, tortillas and coffee. At the end of the day for dinner, the food eaten depends on the family’s income, geographic regions and family customs. Americans typically eat three meals a day with snacking in between. At breakfast, there is no typical meal; the same can be said for lunch and dinner as well. All of the foods that a family eats can depend on income. …show more content…
Tapas is a tradition of people travelling from bar to bar sharing snacks and bar specialties with friends. Sobremesa, in Spanish, means “over the table”. It is the activity of conversation after a meal. Instead of leaving the table once a person is finished, everyone stays until everyone is finished and make conversation. Next, is siesta; siesta lasts for about two hours after lunch when everyone is relaxing. During siesta, many businesses close so the employees can take a break. In America, there is an activity similar to tapas and it is called bar hopping, where people often walk from one bar to another in one night and
At my understanding, the term Hispanic is wrongly used when referring to a race. Being Hispanic is, of course, to belong to an ethnic group, but it is much more than that. It is not about the color of your skin or your hair, but about culture, tradition, and manners. All started with the Spanish and Portuguese colonization of South and Central America. From Europe came the adventurous men, full of ambitions and courage. These attributes blended with the strength and energy of African slaves and the Native Americans, and this mixture led to the born of this new culture that we called Hispanic.
In the 16th and 17th centuries the world saw the formation of something never before seen: a large scale global economy. At the center of this economy was Spain, Spanish America, and silver. With increasing pressure on the Habsburg regime to compete with the Dutch trading empire, the Spanish found a novel source of income in the form of silver. Mined and refined in Spanish America and shipped to Europe and Asia, silver stimulated the growth of not only the Spanish empire in the 16th and 17th centuries, but also the growth of Spanish America (Tutino Lecture). Three distinct regions produced the vast sums of silver needed to sustain this global economy; the Bajío, Mesoamerica, and the Andes. The Bajío region is located in current day Central Mexico and extends to Northern Mexico.
American culture is heavily influenced by the Hispanic culture because when Hispanic people move to America they bring their culture with them. Their culture has influenced our religion, cuisine, social media, etc. Hispanic people make up 15.8% of the population in America so it is no surprise that they are the leading minority group to have influence on American culture.
Culture can be seen from the interaction of many things such as history, activities and developments. It is also represented in the form of people live. Living in two different countries is a unique experience that gives you a new way of thinking. In my case I have lived in Colombia and now in the United States. Despite bearing some minor similarities, the differences between this to countries are notable in geography, festivities, economic and food.
Culture is the overall moral belief, customs, language, and attitudes a person is brought and raised into. Daily, we are exposed to diverse and different cultures everyday which allow us to learn the different values and traditions each culture possess. The importance of observing and learning different customs is beneficial because it can help us better adapt and prevent misunderstandings when we communicate and interact with others. Hispanics and Americans are two huge cultures that have been sharing the same living space for years but are an example of two different civilizations. While both, Hispanics and Americans, share many similarities they both differ in recognition of religion, language,
Frequently, we do not put too much attention to our own cultural values and traditions until we are exposed to a different culture, and start comparing. In order to have a more productive and fruitful life I believe we need to become more self-aware and more sensitive to the culturally and ethnically diverse community we live in. Two cultures that have been sharing the same living space for centuries are the Hispanic and American culture. In this paper I would be analyzing each culture giving a brief background and pointing out some aspects in how they differ, like the perception of time, family, orientation, and others. American culture has a couple of aspects in which it differs from the Hispanic culture, which for the
Latino Americans are facing issues with their identity because of their ethnic and racial backgrounds due to our education institutions in America. These issues result in a separation of their American and Latino culture creating two different identities but not enough of American or Latino identity to fully feel part of either culture.
The Hispanic population has experienced an incredible growth in the past decade in the United States of America. In 2006 it was estimated that the Hispanic cover 11 % of the population in North America. Their Origin is in Mexico and the few Spanish speaking countries in the Caribbean. American culture is derived from people who originated from the European nations like Italy and the Great Britain. Cultural identity is very important for every ethnic group as it shapes the culture of that particular faction and therefore, a certain culture cannot realize its own values until it is exposed to another one.
The culture I choose to explore is the Hispanic culture. I choose this culture because many of the people I work with and many of my friends identify with the Hispanic culture and I feel it would be interesting to know more about a culture that is so relevant to my life. A few of the big things in Hispanic culture that I found interesting are language, traditions and food. Hispanic refers to a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture.
America have a variety of food with no staple food to eat with every meal, unlike in Vietnam where the food is more exotic, but very easily to get sick of. Both countries daily meals consist of cooked goods, vegetables, and a variety of foods. Daily routine for eating is the same for both countries consisting of breakfast, lunch and dinner. But where there are similarities, there are differences such as the food cultures. Both the countries have difference regions, so of course each region vary on what they eat, and what they have access to. In America, the southern region’s foods are different than the cooked foods in other regions. In the same way, the foods that the southern region
Just like in the US there are 3 meals a day. But the most important meal of the day is el almuerzo (lunch) unlike the US.To start off the day they have a huge breakfast, which includes 2 eggs and a smaller steak with beans and a cup of coffee. For
After 1492 with the Protestant Reformation, improved navigation techniques, the discoveries of Christopher Columbus, European exploration of the “New World” began in earnest. However, the ways in which they interacted with the Native Americans differed drastically. Some were respectful of the Native American culture, and tried to work with the natives, other tried to conform the natives to their own beliefs.
Before Columbus sailed across the ocean in 1492, religion had already been a pre-existing thing that was being practiced throughout great Indian empires. As well as each empire’s grand scale of rich natural resources such as gold and silver, however with the arrival of the Spanish the Indians hierarchy drastically changed with the introduction of the Caste system.
Since 5000 BCE indigenous Arawak, Taino and Ciboney people have inhabited the island where Haiti is located. Around 300 BCE, the indigenous began to settle and establish small farming towns. In these small towns, the main economy was farming, fishing and the trade of various luxury goods such as gold and jewelry. The indigenous people called their island Quisqueya. As the years went by, the indigenous developed their society more. However, their growth was interrupted by Spanish conquest.
I had the opportunity and pleasure to attend the Latin Cultural event held in the event center located in the Cunningham Memorial Library. The event was sponsored by the language department of Indiana State University and featured many different items to look at culturally. At the event, there were statues, posters, games, contests, and presentations depicting the history of the Latin culture and influence that the Latin culture has had on our modern society. Latin has influenced our culture in every aspect including fashion, music, education, law, technology, and science, and the Latin culture appears to be alive and well in today’s modern society.
