Who wouldn’t want to be a Spartan?
If I had a choice during the 5th Century to be part of either Spartans or Athens I would choose to be part of the Spartans. I say this for many reasons I will explain shortly. Athens and Spartans were quite different when it came to the way each of the cities were ruled and the way each of the citizens that lived there were treated. In Sparta the government was very different from the Athens. If you entered Sparta it was as if you were entering some sort of camp for the military. They were very disciplined and honestly treated most of their citizens like soldiers. Now I know what you are thinking. You are thinking well Sparta does not sound fun at all so why would anyone want to live there or choose them

If the Athens had something the Spartans wanted all they would have to do is go and fight them and take whatever it is that they wanted. Things are different now in days because people use their intelligence and knowledge to get them what they want and respect, but back then things were different, using strength was one of the only ways people knew how to get what they wanted and that is why the Spartans were so successful. The Spartans could take whatever they wanted from the Athens because they had their military behind them. In Greece women weren’t treated with much respect but Spartans did treat women better than others. Athen women were stay at home wives and moms. They were very obedient to their husbands and really only knew how to do home things. Another reason I would prefer to live in Sparta is because at least the women in Sparta were privileged enough to learn to read and write. Which I consider to be very important both back then and now in days as well. The Spartan women had more rights and were treated overall better. Spartan women also participated in physical activities to stay in shape. They would march naked and because their husbands were away a lot they had freedom to pretty much go where ever they wanted. This may not seem like a big deal but considering other Greek women weren’t …show more content…
I say this for many reasons. One being because the perioikois are much like the middle class. They are not the highest of the rank but they are also not the lowest and that's where I feel I stand. They had their freedom but still had to serve as merchants and artisans. They could also be sent to the military although in my case that wouldn't apply because I am a woman. The class above the perioikoi was the Spartiates. These were the wealthy people. They all owned pieces of land. These were also the people who could possibly become kings and also the people who had more say when it came to the government. Finally below all classes where the lowest group of people called the helots. These were the people that were treated like slaves. They did a lot of physical labor and would farm the land of the Spartiates and gave them half of the produce that they would grow. Although they were treated poorly I found it surprising that the helots were entitled to even half of the crops/ produce. The Spartiates could have given them even less or nothing at all. There were undercover government officials and police that carefully watched the helots. They did this to make sure they didn’t go against the government or start trouble. If they did they were to be killed. The government would start wars against the helots every year to also help stop rebellious acts the helots
Athens is more superior than Sparta through, government, economy, and culture. Athens government is a democracy which means all citizens get to take part. In Athens “ all men are on an equality” which means “ Not of the few but of the many” (doc 3 pericles). Every citizen in Athens is allowed to take part in government, even poor citizens. Unlike Sparta, who has an oligarchy, monarchy, and democracy. The Spartan government is made up of kings and elders only. Not everyone gets to participate.
All Women got to own their own property, In addition, Spartan women could move around with freedom without their husbands, and wear whatever clothing they’d like. And Finally, Homosexuality was very common in Sparta. Many people believed that this happened in all of Greece, but it was only spread in a small number of Greek states. The men of ancient Sparta were largely homosexual, or bisexual. This may be because men grew up with the same group of males throughout their entire life. From when they started training at the age of 7, to when they died in battle alongside them in war.Bisexuality was also fairly common among women. And these are the three reasons why I would love to live in
Athens and Sparta are the two famous city-states in Ancient Greece. The Athens was more superior then Sparta. The Athenians were stronger because they had a better geography, government, cultural achievements, and I would rather live in the Athens.
Ancient Greece was comprised of small city-states, of which Sparta and Athens were two. Athens was renowned as a center of wisdom and learning. The people of Athens were interested in arts, music, and intellectual pursuits. Sparta, on the other hand, was recognized for its military strength. A Spartan's life was centered on the state, because he lived and died to serve the state. Although the competing city-states of Sparta and Athens were individually different as well as governmentally diverse, they both managed to become dominating powers in Ancient Greece.
As we look back upon the two significant differences in the governmental systems of Sparta and Athens, there are also many other characteristics that distinguish the differences and similarities of these two city states. The difference in land as well as population perceives a relative historical comparison. Sparta lacked land area and was forced to seek other land in the fertile plain of Messenia. Although, if we look at the Athens, we see that they had no issues with plentiful land, as they possessed large and populous territory.
Athens and Sparta are two rivals of ancient Greece. Athenians and Spartans lived their lives different, and they valued different things. Athenians and Spartans had an Assembly, whose members were elected by the people. Sparta were ruled by two kings, those two kings either ruled until they were died or forced out of office. Athens were ruled by archons, they were elected annually. Athens in the birthplace of democracy. Spartans focused on war and obedience. Young boys were trained to be warriors. Young women were trained to be mothers and warriors. Athenians could get good education and could pursue several kinds of arts or sciences. For many years Spartan armies provided much defense of the Greek lands. The Spartans bravery and courage at the “Battle of Thermopylae” during the Persians Wars, inspired all of Greece to fight back with all their might against the invading Persians. Athenians and Spartans fought side by side in the “Battle of Platea”, which ended the Persians invasions of Greece. Spartans provided assistance for Greece when necessary. Athenians wanted to control land around them. That led to war between all the Greeks, this was the “Peloponnesian War”. After many years of fighting the Spartans won. In Greek spirit Sparta refused to burn the city of Athens. The culture and spirit of Athens was allowed to live on, as long as Athenians no longer desired to rule Greek. Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. Sparta is known as Sparti in Greek. Sparta is
Envision a world where the people are ravenous and yearning for any remnant of food they could obtain, where the society is overrun and no one has a free say. This is the type of society the ancient Spartans would have lived like unlike the ancient Athenians. The Athenians lived a far more diverse life if compared to Sparta. Ancient Athens was better to live in than ancient Sparta due to its efficient and honorable government and flourishing economy.
Sparta had the geographic advantage above Athens. Sparta is better because, according to Document G, “The Eurotas River provided much-needed water, while the nearby plains allowed the ancient Spartans to grow all the food they needed.” Sparta was already provided with enough supplies on their own and didn’t have to trade things with other city-states. Having rivers, mountains, and rivers gave the Ancient Spartans the right environments to grow many things such as figs and wheat, the Ancient Spartans also had enough room to raise cows for meat, milk, and cheese. Another reason why Sparta has the geographic advantage is shown in Document F, which states, “Sparta thus came to control some 8,500 km² of territory making it the largest city state
Since Athenian citizens had the power to impact their government, their values were displayed in the decisions that were made. Athens enjoyed spreading their culture to different places, learning from others, and trading for expensive items, which is shown by this excerpt. “Then the greatness of our city brings it about that all the good things from all over the world flow into us, so that to us it seems just as natural to enjoy foreign goods as our own local products…” (Dale. Civilizations in History. Alternative Two. Pg. 92) Athens was a nation that was willing to adapt, whereas Sparta did not want to change whatsoever, which is clearly presented by this quotation. “They were suspicious of anything foreign, including trade, and they resisted change of any kind.” (Dale. Civilizations in History. Alternative One.) Sparta was solely focused on their military, and due to it being the basis of their society, they did not want to put it at risk. So, they kept to themselves. On the other hand, Athens wanted to experience different cultures,
Athens had a greater amount of power. Equally important, the amount of freedom Spartan’s had was not comparable to the freedom Athenian’s had. Lastly, Athens had world changing achievements.
Sparta is a better place to have an exciting or joyful life because you would be isolated by mountains and oceans. These mountains and oceans would make Sparta would be in a condition of prosperity and comfort. Sparta also has a great military strength, it is much better than Athens military because the men go to war at the age of 7-30. The Spartan men get more and children become great warriors because they at war and war training for 23 years. Spartan women are better than Athenian women because they have more rights, these rights coclude of being able to marry anyone they wish to. Spartan
Athens and Sparta differed in their ideas of getting along with the rest of the Greek empires. I think Athens would be a better place to live because it’s safer and you have a lot more freedom.
A reason that I would live in Sparta is that I would be able to buy my freedom, whereas in Athens I would have to be a slave for ever. Being able to buy your freedom means that you could live a normal life like other free men.
In his text, Mr. Duckworth states, “Sparta was an “oligarchy”. The Ancient Greek “oligos” translates to “few”, while “archia” means “rule” -”rule by the few”.” However, some do not believe that an oligarchic government is the best government. In an oligarchy, you have little to no say in who your leaders are. You don’t have a say in the outcome of conflicts or important decisions in the community.
Sparta and Athens societies and values were different as well. As stated in Document E Lycurgus, lawgiver of Sparta, did not allow Spartans to leave the city. This was done because he did not want them to adapt to foreign influences. All of these values/beliefs were based on one thing, to keep the Spartan soldiers strong and disciplined. In Athens Pericles boasts about how Athens is open to all which results in cultural diffusion (Document F). When Athens had festivals everyone except for slaves
