Comparing Donatello's David And Goliath

The story of David and Goliath is inspirational. It is about a courageous shepherd called David, who’s rescued Israel by defying a colossal giant called Goliath and killing him with a slingshot and a bag of stone-rocks. Donatello and Gianlorenzo Bermini made each a sculpture showing David. Each sculpture differs from each other starting with material, size, and style. One important thing to consider is the material used to create these statues. Donatello's David is nude and made of bronze. Definitely, Donatello made it to history with this first male free standing statue that was entirely unsupported, also Donatello captured the emotions in the statue. Whereas, Bernini's David is half clothed and made of Marble, also the energy seen on donatello’s David is not projected on bermini’s David. Bermini was more of an action men, and projected David with an ideal body. Donatello’s David is shown more weak and incapable of causing the killing of a giant. I would say Donatello’s sculpture is more realistic than the idealization statue of Bermini’s David. …show more content…

Donatello’s David measurements are about 5 feet and 2.25 inches .While Bermini’s David is at about 5 feet and 7 inches. The size is really important specially when working with different materials to make sculptures. Donatello’s David was more women size, while, Bermini’s David was more life size statue. They both had different styles and were made in different stages in life, for example Donatello’s David was made during the Renaissance period, whereas, Bermini’s David was made during the Baroque period. Which have a lot to do with the way they sculptured David because the influence of the people, and styles at that
