There is huge jump from these feudal societies to industrial societies. All of a sudden there are assembly lines, steam engines, cotton gins, textiles, and 100,000 work units compared to 100 work units. There were lots of jobs in factories, where people worked in unsafe conditions for little pay. Children could work and get paid a lot less than adults. The union was developed to try get employees the rights they deserved, stop child labor, and gain some security in their jobs. Working in factories on an assembly line began to make workers de-skilled and replaceable. Productivity flew through the roof though with all the new machines and growing technology.

Labor unions are a gathering of people for a united cause. People within a labor union fight for common goals such as better pay and fair working conditions. In most cases when a union attacks a certain aspect it is so they can all acquire the same out come, such as raising the minimum wage to twelve dollars an hour for all. The primary reason unions were created was because workers weren’t always treated appropriately throughout history. Industrial leaders would make maximum profit by making their employees work twelve to fifteen hour workdays for seven days a week and they would only earn pennies for each hour of work. The conditions in which employees conducted work was unsafe and unhealthy yet no one could complain because they could not afford to lose their job. This is when labor unions were introduced, at first they started off small only pertaining to a specific geological area in regards to a specific craft such as shoe making in Philadelphia. The smaller unions are known as locals, an employee affiliated with the union is then appointed as a liaison between their fellow workers and the corporation making them the shop steward. However, people realized they held power in numbers and ultimately national unions were established such as the, Knights of Labor.

After the Civil War ended the United States moved into a period referred to as the Gilded Age. The Gilded Age brought to America a rapidly growing economy lead and dominated by the heads of industry and finance. As the economy grew, so did the population which would result in a higher demand for labor and jobs to provide the growing families of America. As more and more jobs were created, the working class would begin to see a decline in working conditions. These poor and worsening conditions left workers upset, exhausted, sick, and in some cases conditions were so terrible that many people died while simply doing their job. The American Federation of Teachers is very similar to the medieval guilds, but they also have their differences. Unions and Guild have their similarities and differences first off, both are almost the same thing. A guild is a group of people with common interests and goals who unite for their mutual benefit. Like today the lords of the past they act like the employers of today, and we are still like the guilds who are looking for the benefits for better life for our families.
