
2005 saw the worst hurricane in recent memory, Katrina. 2017 saw yet another truly devastating hurricane, Harvey. These two hurricanes were both destructive in different ways. These hurricanes caused major damage and hard times after they hit.The real question though, is which one was more destructive? Hurricane Harvey was the only major hurricane to hit Texas since 2005, which was Hurricane Wilma. Estimates were put at as much as about 75 billion dollars worth of destruction.That is a lot of damage! Hurricane Harvey dropped about 40-52 inches of rain. Harvey was a category 4 hurricane with a diameter of 280 miles, and had wind speeds up to 130 mph during its first landfall. This was the longest lasting hurricane in Texas ever to happen. About 30,000 people are needing temporary shelter. Although this hurricane did a lot of damage, it didn’t kill to many people. Hurricane Harvey’s killed a total of 82 people. Harvey was a very spread out hurricane hitting the Gulf Coast area, to Katrina was a very focused hurricane hitting mostly New Orleans. Thousands of people were under water and many became homeless. Harvey produced a record 49 inches of rain since it came ashore. It caused many unexpected destructions along with death of some people.
Hurricane Katrina was the storm of the century. Hurricane Sandy earned the nickname Super storm Sandy. If anyone had any doubts as to what Mother Nature is capable of, these storms are perfect examples of the fury she can dish out here on planet Earth. The hurricane affected Texas, Louisiana, Belize, Nicaragua, Honduras, Eastern United States & more. Many people had to leave or move their family to a different location due to the hurricane.
