Of the volcanoes that are located in the United States there are two which are world renowned for their activity and their power to change the region surrounding them. The two volcanoes would be Mount Saint Helens and Mount Kilauea. In order to get a better understanding of these volcanoes we will be comparing and contrasting them as well as talking about how they were formed and when they last had an eruption. Let’s begin with Mount St. Helens which is located in the pacific northwest of the United States. To be more specific it is located in Washington State and is a part of the Cascade mountain range that spans from California to Canada. If it is situated on a constructive plate boundary then it is generally less explosive, and therefore poses different threats to volcanoes situated on a destructive plate boundary. The volcano may also be situated on a hotspot like in Hawaii, where the eruptions aren’t very explosive. Volcanos which aren’t explosive can pose other threats to lava flows though, such as dangerous gases being released. Like in Lake Nyos, Cameroon where 1700 people died.
The Kilauea Volcano is the youngest and most active Hawaiian shield volcano. This volcano is located on Hawaii’s Big Island. The volcano is part of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Kilauea is 300,000 to 600,000 years old. The native people from the Polynesian Islands discovered Kilauea. The other four volcanoes of Hawaii are Kohala, Mauna Loa, and Mauna Kea.
Mount St Helens erupted on the 18th May 1980 at 9am and is an active strata volcano Washington State USA, a MEDC. Where as on 18th July 1995, during the daytime, Montserrat, a LEDC during the day, Montserrat's Soufrière Hills composite volcano of a height 1050m, meaning sulphur hills, dormant for centuries, erupted and produced a phreatic eruption. Many people go to Hawaii for a nice relaxing vacation, not knowing they’re right next to one of the five most active volcanos in the world,Kilauea. Kilauea had killed over 400 people in a single eruption. Kilauea is formed on a hotspot,or a place of significant activity or danger,this is one of the reasons Kilauea is so active. Kilauea has had many small eruptions, but the last large eruption lasted 30 years and was from 1983 to 2013. Kilauea may seem like any other regular volcano but it is much more dangerous.

It was May 18th, 1980. The eruption of Mount St. Helens occurred in Washington,United States. The exact time it had happened is at 8:32:17. The eruption happened 96 miles out South of Seattle, Washington and 50 miles northeast of Portland,Oregon. Many people died during this time. About 50 people had died. 250 homes were destroyed. Along with 47 bridges, 15 miles of railways, 185 miles of highway was also destroyed. Many tiny earthquakes had happened a couple days before the eruption had happened.

Kilauea volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Kilauea means spreading or spewing for its frequent lava flows (USGS, 2014). It is a shield volcano that locates on the southern of the Big Island in the Hawaii island chain at 19o25’16” N-155o17’13” W with the elevation of 4190 feet above the sea level. The island chain forms by the movement of the Pacific plate over the stationary hot spot (Bagley, 2014). The volcanoes are located where there is a divergence or convergence in the tectonic plates and bring their lava from the deepest of the terrestrial mantle. The materials and explosions of these ginates represent a constant risk in the places inhabited by the human being, nevertheless the people ususually live in these areas no matter the risk. On the other hand the volcanos can change the geology of an impressive form, or to cool the temperature of the earth, or to darken the sky. The scientific community increases its efforts to try to understand better what happens in volcanoes, however it is impossible to predict these conditions.
