Comparing Odyssey And Perseus Of Homer's Odyssey

Many characters that are in the movie are not the same representations as they are in the movie like King Acrisius in the book it says he is the father of perseus’ mother. In the story heroes,gods,and monsters of the greek world it talks about how he locked her in a dungeon so her son wont kill him.In the movie clash of the titans it says zeus turned into king Acrisius and went to bed with Queen Danae.

Zeus’ different roles in the two stories lead to his contrasting personality traits, as both authors try to find reasons for the audience to sympathize with the tale’s main character, they have to inevitably change Zeus’ character

My original thought when comparing Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the Lightning Thief the movie and Classical mythology was that there would be many more references to the myth of Perceus than any other myth throughout the movie in its entirety. That’s where I was wrong. After watching the movie again and researching the different hero myths my opinion has changed. My new thoughts are that the movie is not influenced by the myth of Perceus any more than other hero myths. The movie ties together many different heroes’ stories and mixes them together to make a wonderful story about a young boy. The movie was based on a book series written by Rick Riordan.

Both “Perseus” and Percy Jackson: Lightning Thief have the plot type of The Quest. However, Perseus’ father is Zeus while Percy Jackson’s father is Poseidon. They both have mentors, but while Perseus has Athena and Hermes to guide him, Percy Jackson gets help from Annabeth and Luke, who are the children of Athena and Hermes. However they both fight Medusa as part of their quests. In similar fashion, they both claim Medusa’s head as a prize. Even so, there is a clear difference between their journeys; in Percy Jackson: Lightning Thief, Luke, the son of Hermes, is evil and betrays Percy. Furthermore, in “Perseus”, Perseus gets help from the grey sisters, something that never happens in Percy Jackson: Lightning Thief.

The story is still the same except that few details were added here, and others removed over there… The greeks have retold the story in it has changed since, it changed as the knowledge of the physical word increased (Jason and the golden fleece BBC 1). “According to the original story, Jason was the chef member of the Minuans, later, as we approached the modern day, other better known heroes such as hercules,Castor and Polydeuces, were added to his crew”(Jason and the golden fleece BBC 1). The similarities in the book and the movie Jason and the Argonauts is that Jason is in both, obviously he is the main character in both the book and the movie. The clashing cliffs are in both of the stories and their mission is to get the Golden Fleece. The biggest differences between both are the following, Hercules is not in the two stories, he is only in Edith Hamilton’s book. There is a dragon in the book but in the movie it is called a hydra, also in the film the dragon tooth army is a bunch of skeletons and in the book they are soldiers. These were just a few example of what I’ve seen changed threw the years between the movie and book, people mostly enjoy the book better because it has more details and is more descriptive then the

Hades has not one, but two versions of a myth involving him, both of which are akin to Pluto’s myth. In the first version, Hades falls in love with Persephone, the daughter of the goddess of harvest named Demeter. Hades tells his brother, Zeus, about his secret admiration for Persephone and asks for help. Zeus agrees to open up the ground beneath Persephone in order to trap her. Then, Hades comes along, takes Persephone from her trap, and brings her to the Underworld forcefully. In the Underworld, Hades makes Persephone become his wife. Consequently, Persephone becomes very unhappy. However, after much time, she came to love the cold-blooded god and lived happily with him. The second version of this myth includes more details. Medusa was seen as a monster, her curls were snakes and if anyone dared to look at her they would be turned into stone. Perseus was challenged to kill Medusa and bring back her head. Medusa had never been defeated so know one expected Perseus to complete the challenge. Against everyone’s beliefs, Perseus overcame the challenged and portrayed the message that if a person sets his mind towards something they can achieve it. Perseus could not achieve the challenged unless he had courage. It would take courage go kill Medusa when all odds are not in your favor. Both messages were very important to anyone who reads this story.

The differences from the story can sometimes be farfetched and they tend to not make sense. The similarities ,however, keep the storyline the same. The main points of Perseus being thrown into the ocean as a baby and slaying Medusa when he grows older are the same. He also rescues Andromeda from a beast and becomes a hero.

The movie and the play are similar but differ from each other in various ways. Shakespeare set the story in Athens in the 1500s and Hoffman set it in an Italian village in the 1900s. Theseus is the Duke of Athens and Hippolyta is the queen

The myth has only changed to adapt to the modern times (Lieberman). As from the detailed summary before, there were crucial parts of the myth that are necessary in order for the myth to flow easily. There have been a few adaptations of the myth throughout the years. More recently, in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, a couple book and movie adaptations have been created. In 1867, The Life and Death of Jason written by British writer William Morris has many of the key aspects of the myth in his book. There are only a small number of differences in the two. One difference is the reason for Heracles disappearance. Morris most likely kept the same details as the myth, but added some of his personal touch to it to appeal to his readers (Lieberman). Another adaptation of the myth is the first movie adaptation called Jason and the Argonauts, made in 1963. The same relative story is found in the movie, but some details were changed. In the movie, Jason meets Pelias by saving him in the river as he was drowning. In the process, Jason loses a sandal. After saving Pelias, not realizing who he was, Jason told him about his desire to rule Iolcus. Pelias tells him to retrieve the Golden Fleece and he would have the power to overthrow Pelias. Many films in the modern era have taking inspiration from Greek Mythology. Greek Mythology is a good source for script writers because it includes ancient engaging stories which relates to human life. Hence, through the anthropocentrism of myth human feelings, emotions, and philosophical ideas are expressed which can be captivating to the film audience. One of such myths is the myth of Persephone. Despite the fact both versions follow different stories, they still have similarities even if they are small. Both versions share the story of how Perseus was put into a coffin with his mother, thrown from a cliff and was guided to an island where he would be rescued by a fisherman. These two stories also share Perseus’s visit to the Graeae and his beheading of Medusa. Clash of the Titans the movie is about a half man half god man named Perseus. Perseus goes on a quest to save his town from being destroyed by the Kracken. The movie shows how he learns to be a warrior and defeats monsters to become a hero. The Greek story on the other hand is about Perseus going on an adventure to kill Medusa. Along the way he kills Katos. The Greek story is mostly about Perseus fulfilling his destiny. This being said there are differences between the book and the story.
