Randy and Santiago have both gone on many journeys. Although Santiago’s was a literal journey, Randy has told us about the lessons he has learned on his journey through life. Both men from these books shared many life lessons with us like to just get the elephant in the room out in the open and also to follow where your heart leads you. I think most people were able to retain many valuable lessons and suggestions on how to fulfill your dreams and live a full life. I felt Randy’s life spoke more clearly to me than Santiago. I have learned from these books and hope my peers have as well. Even though The Alchemist was favored more to following your heart and believing in yourself, I think Randy’s book has shown more insight to the real world …show more content…
While this book was both entertaining and enlightening, I believe both stories would touch the life of any thoughtful reader and inspire each person to live a fuller life. For instance, even though Randy did spend lots of money on carnival games trying to beat his father for the biggest stuffed animal, he was participating in something he enjoyed and had fun doing “We don’t beat the reaper by living longer, we beat the reaper by living well and living fully.” I have learned that it is not always about how much money you make, what is more important is enjoying the things you spend your time and money doing. In reading The Last Lecture I have realized family isn’t always guaranteed and should not be taken for granted. Randy’s family played a major part in the journey he took through life he showed this by saying “People are more important than things.” He wouldn’t have been able to do so many great things throughout his life if he did not have the love and support of his family. His parents loved and shaped his life and contributed in part to his awesomeness. Even though his mother introduced him as, “the kind of doctor that doesn’t help anybody” I’m sure she was very proud of her
A spiritual journey is not all about the discovery, more importantly it is about uncovering the inner nature of one’s being. In the light of, a spiritual growth which is seen in Santiago's character due to the fact, he was not centered on the journey itself. Instead, he was engaged with the meaning of the atmospheric elements along the way which directed his path with a sense of purpose. During Santiago's journey he will learn about the interconnectedness of the surrounding world through the omens of nature that will reveal a hidden message about of the soul of the world. Additionally, Santiago learns along his travels that his personal legend is the essence of his life as well as, the purpose of his existence to fulfill his individual legend
Lastly, Chris Mccandless got to fulfill his dream, live his own life, and now he even got to find his inner self, find out who he truly is. Chris was the kind of person that lived dangerously unlike most people, he was different “It is hardly unusual for a young man to be drawn to a pursuit considered reckless by his elders...Danger has always held a certain allure. McCandless, in his fashion, merely took risk-taking to its logical extreme” (Krakauer, 182). Chris’s true self-was one that was riskful and daring until he could finish the task. Furthermore, he was different from others and throughout his journey, others could see that. In the end that was the kind of person Chris Mccandless was, and this is the person he became after fulfilling his dream and living his own life. In contrast, others did
In my opinion Santiago, a shepherd boy from Andalusian town, changed the most in this novel. In the beginning of the story he was scared to trust in himself and follow his dreams. Santiago goes to the extent of searching for help from a gypsy. She tells him his meaning of his own dream and instead of trusting her he seeks another opinion. He goes on a journey across the Sahara to reach the Alchemist. When he asked The Alchemist how to turn himself into wind and he doesn’t get step by step instructions he is forced to trust his own judgement and intuition and believe in himself to figure it out. At the end of the story, he encounters a robber who talks to Santiago about his dream and why he would go on a journey across the Sahara. Santiago realizes
What makes a hero be a hero? A hero has to have certain characteristics, such as; bravery, wisdom, etc. No matter what characteristics are pointed out, every story has a hero, or an archetypal hero. From a short stories to really long novels, you will have some type of hero. In the novel The Alchemist, the main character Santiago is a hero. The book is about how everyone should live their dreams and never give up on them. It follows a young man named Santiago who is following his own dream, or his own “Personal Legend”. It follows him and his struggles to achieve said Personal Legend. Santiago is a hero because he is wise, kind, and brave; He is also a hero because he displays characteristics of an archetypal hero..
The poem that is related most closely to the book “The Alchemist” is “The road not Taken”. These two are related because both the boy, and the mna in the poem had choices of going two separate ways. They both could have gone the way that is more common and they are more comfortable with. But they both decided the uncommon, and less comfortable. “The roads diverged in a yellow wood “ (Frost). He Had a choice and decided to go the most adventures way like the boy in the alchemist. They both wanted to follow their heart and go away from the other people were doing. “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by (Frost). He didn’t care that he was taking the road less traveled by, he was just following his heart. Just like
In Santiago’s journey to achieving his Personal Legend, he faces multiple situations where he has to choose one over the other.
The book The Alchemist was about a young man named Santiago who followed his dream to discover a hidden treasure. As Santiago progressed throughout his journey, his character changed a lot. Santiago, a man who has great instincts, is afraid to trust his dream at the beginning of the book but over time becomes more and more confident with his choices in in this aspect he changes from the beginning of the book to the end.
As soon as I picked this book up, I could not put it down. Every chance I got, I was reading. I was begging in class for you to let us have down time so I could submerge myself into this virtual reality that I wanted to experience. Unfortunately at the end of this memoir, Chris McCandless dies of what Krakauer believes to be starvation. The cool thing about how Krakauer revised this novel is how he relates it to all teenagers. At one point in time mostly all teenagers have a fight with their parents and they feel as if running away from it all is their only escape. He focuses on Chirs McCandless’ life so much to create the theme that no matter how much you fight and argue, your parents love you and they want the best for you no matter what.
Santiago changes in many ways. He changes from worrying about the future, to not worrying. He learns that
One of the biggest misconception is “life is about the journey, not the destination.” This quote is basically saying the outcome of what you do is less important than the experiences you face along the way. What would your ride to school matter if you didn’t get to school? What would you purchasing ingredients for a recipe mean, if you didn’t make the recipe? What would reading a book matter if it didn’t have an ending? Everything would be aimless if it didn’t have an ending. Both The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost explore the central idea of journey versus destination. The Alchemist is a book about a shepherd boy named Santiago who goes on a journey to achieve his personal legend. “The Road Not Taken” is a poem about a man who comes at a crossroads; he must decide what
Throughout The Alchemist there were many twists and turns as well as changes to the main character Santiago. He had to adapt to the different ways of life in each place he visited, and had the tenacity to never give up on his journey even when times became tough, i.e. when he was robbed. Santiago started out as a shepherd, happy with how life was, maybe a sense of wanting more; later he encountered a king, gypsies, and others along the way who literally wanted him to follow his dreams because they could change a person’s life. He had to take risks and leave everything he had known behind to follow something he knew little to none about. When Santiago wanted to stay within his boundaries, he was pushed by the people he met which enabled him
Both Chris McCandless and Adam Shepard endured a rough adventure as they both left home to go on their own journey. Adam Shepard had a different goal than Chris McCandless, He wanted to know if the American Dream was still an achievable goal when you have nothing to start out with. Chris McCandless just wanted to leave home and be as far away from his parents as he could. Adam Shephard’s project left a bigger impact on people rather than Chris McCandless who went on an adventure just to go and do what he wanted which ended up getting him killed.
Santiago’s growth was inspiring to me. He has learned a great deal from action. He learns quite a lot about the land and his sheep by being a shepherd and paying attention to the world around him. His grandfather had mentioned to him a while back of an omen. “By traveling, watching and paying attention, the world will speak to Santiago to help him find is Personal Legend.” Through action, Santiago learns how easy it is to search for one’s Personal Legend. Everyone has their own way of learning things. For example when Santiago decides to try reading the Englishman’s book and he would try and read the signs of the desert. The boy does not learn a thing from the book and the Englishman learns nothing from watching the caravan. Just as Santiago
The Theme of “The Alchemist,” by Paulo Coelho is, always follow your dreams and listen to your heart. At the start of the novel Santiago does not know what he should do when he is confronted by his dream. But by the end of the novel Santiago completely trusts his heart to guide him though life. Santiago’s story shows him learning and living out the theme of the novel.
Santiago plays a huge role in the theme is developed throughout the story. This is mostly due to how much the reader sees how Santiago changes as the novel progresses and as he gets closer to completing his Personal Legend. In the beginning of the story it is revealed that Santiago decided to abandon becoming a priest in favor of traveling, which can be interpreted as the earliest sign of change and transformation from the main character before his real journey begins. "I found these one day in the fields. I wanted them to be a part of your inheritance. But use them to buy your flock. Take to the fields, and someday you'll learn that our countryside is the best, and our women the most beautiful" (Coelho 18). Digging into the story more only leads to more examples of how Santiago changes. One major example that
