The literary movement of local-color regionalism in American literature is a very distinctive and interesting form of fiction writing that effectively combines regional characteristics, dialect, customs and humor. In Bret Harte’s Tennessee’s Partner, these characteristics helped the story jump off the page, allowing the reader to understand the “times” rather than just the characters. And, for that reason, I feel that this is an outstanding piece of work.

“Nashville” by Tiana Clark was published in 2017 and details the experience of a black women through first person during present time and how her life as a black woman relates back strongly to the civil rights movement of the 1960’s. The speaker is a woman who is married to a white man and that is chasing someone who said a racial slur to her on the streets. The poem ends with her trying to come with peace with finding out who said the racial slur so she can get over it and move on. Racism has been around a long time. The geography of the Southern and the New England colonies were different from each other. For instance, New England had mountains and rocky soil. On the other hand, the Southern region had plantations with fertile soil and very flat land. The south also had long growing seasons and warm weather. The New England and Southern regions had some similarities with their geography. New England towns were settled near the Atlantic ocean or by rivers. Plantations were also built near rivers such as the James River (Doc 6). Therefore, the geography of the Southern and New England regions had similarities and differences.

The geography of Watts, Oklahoma is the inspiration of it's origin. This town is a product of the current, popular, transportation of the time. It was created to provide energy and repairs for the KCSSR. (The Kansas City Southern Railroad.) One example of geography themes that have affected the author, is the many people who he was surrounded by daily. Oklahoma had been densely populated with native americans. Also, the county poverty level resulted in out of date furniture and other classroom features. Which, in my opinion, are pieces of history in themselves. They contain "scars" from the past times and students of Watts.
