Shakespeare’s King Lear and Dante’s inferno touch on several major points that was important in the past but is still just as important in today's society. Although they differ in nature they both have the same understanding and perspective when it comes to human suffering. Suffering is inevitable because we are subject to the human condition therefore almost making it impossible to make the right choices. Shakespeare and Dante agree that the reason for suffering is a result of making wrongful decisions due to the human conditions of imperfection, both assertions speak truth about the human condition however inferno transmits an aspect of hope that king Lear does not. In “King Lear” Shakespeare highlights that human suffering is unavoidable, the choices he made throughout the play led to a series of events that eventually changed his life for the worse due to stubbornness and not accepting knowledge from the wise. The choices that are made on our behalf not only affects the way life unfolds but also the people surrounding us. Both the Inferno and King Lear have aspects of desperation, but the tone of the works display their differences. Both Shakespeare’s King Lear and Dante’s Inferno explore the reasons for, and results of, human suffering. Each work postulates that human suffering comes as a result of choices that are made: A statement that is not only applicable to the characters in each of the works, but also to the readers. The Inferno and King Lear speak universal truths about the human condition: that suffering is inevitable and unavoidable. While both King Lear and the Inferno concentrate on admonitions and lamentations of human suffering, one of the key differences between the works is that Inferno conveys an aspect of hope that is not nearly as prevalent in King Lear.
The two stories, Inferno by Dante and Paradise Lost by Milton, were written about the biblical hell and its keeper: Satan. Both of these authors had different views about the hell and Satan.
There are many similarities between Dante’s The Inferno and Virgil’s The Aeneid, be it their characterizations or descriptive imagery, but foremost in their ideas of what the afterlife consisted of. Each each epic hero in the works here have descended in to the depths of hell, with The Inferno depicting Dante’s descent into the depths of hell and with Virgil in Book VI of The Aeneid depicting Aeneas’s decent into hell. It can be argued that although different, the knowledge acquired by each character’s descent was equally important to accomplishing their greater tasks at the ends of their journey. Had their descent into hell been skipped their outcomes would have concluded in a different way because their voyages to Hell each played a crucial role in the advancing each narrative.
This dichotomy between external blames and internal repentance is used by Shakespeare to demonstrate the tragic nature of King Lear from more than one plane, showing how two different personalities respond to two similar fates.
Both Lear and Capaneus show excessive pride and stubbornness throughout their respective works, and fail to see their own faults. They were forewarned about their punishments, yet they continued down the path that would bring them the most suffering. Even though suffering is an inevitable part of living and there is no path in life that does not include some sort of suffering, these two men chose the ones that would bring them the most pain.
Shakespeare's King Lear has a different take on the nature of human suffering. While Inferno offers hope for the living so as not to meet the same fate as the souls in hell, Shakespeare simply laments the consequences that our choices cause and the implications have for us. Lear never expected that his choice of dividing his kingdom among his daughters would eventually lead to his demise, as well as his cherished daughter Cordelia. When Lear made the decision to divide up his kingdom, his only thought was that we would finally get to retire in peace. Many times, our decisions also have unforeseen consequences. When Goneril and Regan betrayed Lear was blindsided. He never knew that they were so evil and were capable of being so coldhearted. For all he knew they were his loving daughters, who were going to take care of their aging father. After all, they had just professed their "love" for him with their flattery. Much is the same for us. Many times, we put our faith in others to satisfy us, only to be let down. In Dante’s Inferno, the author Dante Alighieri described the journey of his fictionalized self going through Hell. Dante describes all nine circles as grisly and grave. Gustave Doré’s paintings relate the most to Dante’s descriptions. Doré’s paintings of the Inferno are dark and mysterious, which is how Dante explains Hell in his story. Doré does not use color in his paintings; all of his painting of the Inferno are black, white, and in some shade of grey. His paintings reflect the mood that Dante was trying to interpret in his story. This is why Dante would choose Gustave Doré to illustrate Inferno.

Inferno, written by Dante Alighieri illustrates the idea of justice through the belief that with each action arise a consequence. What you sin above ground, you deal with under. Through this he gives examples of the sins done and the punishment that is inflicted from doing such thing as a disgrace to God. All through Dantes imagination and his views as to how it should be done, there is a punishment for each area of sin committed which is why a person who bribes will be in the further in the level of hell, as compared to someone who has killed an innocent.
Journeys can be taken many ways. Some people take the path less traveled and some people take the easy way out. Dante happens to be on journey that is less traveled, by exploring the depths of Hell in the Inferno. The epic poem’s story is about self-realization and transformation. It sees Dante over coming many things to realize he is a completely different person from the start of the Inferno journey. Dante sees many things that help him gain courage in order to prove to himself and the reader that accepting change and gaining courage can help one to grow as a person and realize their full potential. After seeing people going through certain punishment Dante realizes that he must not seek pity on himself and others in order to fully realize his true potential.

In the Divine Comedy, Dante has landed in a dark forest, lost and confused. He is heading to the mountain that he seeked to reach Heaven. Before he reaches Heaven, he has to surpass Hell and Purgatory. During his journey, he has acknowledged multiple important characters but Virgil is considered the most significant because he was a personal tutor to Dante, and enlightened him more than any other individual. Virgil is seen as just a “guide” to Dante, but there’s more meaning behind it. He has his moments of being seen as a friend, a leader, a teacher, and a parental figure.
King Lear is set in a brutal and savage prehistoric world, a Britain where violence, torture and physical suffering are all so commonplace as to be unremarkable. All through the play we are conscious of strife, buffeting, strain and bodily suffering to the point of agony. the images involving the human body are particularly grim. We have the repeated image of the body in anguished movement, tugged, wrenched, beaten, tortured, and finally broken on a rack. even death is seen by Kent as a welcome release from torture, which is almost the permanent condition of those who live in the Lear world. As Lear is dying, Kent makes the appeal: "O let him pass! He hates him/That would upon the rack of this tough world/ Stretch him out longer". This image of the world as a torture chamber darkens the closing moments of the play. Lear, while imagining himself in some sort of afterlife, still feels pain: "I am bound/ Upon a wheel of fire, that mine own tears/ Do scald like molten lead". In Dante’s Inferno, we followed Dante as he narrates his decent and observations of hell. A wonderful part of that depiction is his descriptions of the creative yet cruel punishments that each of the different sinners receive. This story is an integral part of literary history, and even if I were to have the imagination and ability of Dante Alighieri, I don’t believe I would change this tried and true version known universally.
