I do feel like this compass accurately describes me because I am a mixture of both authoritarian and libertarian views. I also feel like the reason why I am almost in the center is because I have very few stout opinions on political views so I am neither strong libertarian nor authoritarian. The libertarian side of this compass appeals to me because they want people to have freedom of choice and this is something that I agree on. I do question the powerful leaders of this country like a libertarian would because I do not want to follow blindly and trust them quickly without looking into what their actual morals, beliefs and policies are. With the freedom I feel like people deserve, I also do think that there should be structure and order to
Finding myself on the political spectrum was rather easy. I would classify myself a centrist or moderate. My views do not completely align with either major ideology and on major issues I'm split between the liberal and conservative sides. One thing that both liberal and conservative ideologies believe in is Democracy. I believe that we must protect democracy at all costs. The rights that democracy affords us a citizens of the United States are unique and require the upmost respect. I hold the liberal view that the government should protect the public safety. I believe the government is responsible to protect its people and act in the publics best interests. Therefore, I also hold the views that gun control and protection of the environment must be enacted and legislated to protect the public. I believe in equal opportunity and access because if you aren't playing on the same starting field how are you expected to move up and succeed. I hold the conservative
The leader of the semi-nomadic Turks that were around until 1922. He founded the Ottoman Empire in the 13th century.
I noticed that while taking this Political Compass test most of my answers were either agree or disagree, very few questions I answered with strongly agree/disagree. For that reason, I believed that my results were more inclined to be on the non-ideological side since my answers were not radical. According to the test, I fall under the Green section that represents the modern liberal and progressive party; however, diagonally I am around three boxes from the center of the graph. In other words, I would be considered non-ideological since I am closer to the middle of the graph rather than on an extreme side of the political compass. Although my results were bit towards the lower left side, I found it accurate to consider myself non-ideological. I am still in the process of learning about economic and social dimensions thus it is too early to label myself especially as a college student.
Outline the similarities and differences between Adorno et al.’s (1950) and Altemeyer’s (1981) approach to authoritarianism
The major differences between democratic, authoritarian, and anarchic political systems are who holds the power, who has freedom/how much, and how much involvement the government has in the workings of its country. For authoritarian states, the power is held mainly by a single person or an elite group of people, few people have freedom, with what freedom they have being limited, and the government, or rather the leader/leaders, is involved in almost every aspect of the country from controlling the economy to making decisions for the lifestyles of its citizens like deciding how many kids they may have or what hair styles are approved. Everything is at the whim of those in charge and can change at any second. Anarchic is the exact opposite of this. In an anarchic government, everyone has power all the power they can take for themselves, nothing is unpermitted as there are no laws and since a government doesn’t exist, it can’t have any involvement in anything. Finally there is the democratic system which is a happy medium between these two extremes. In a democracy, everyone has some power through the right to vote directly or for elected officials who will run the country (who are limited by a constitution of some kind), everyone has freedom within the country’s generally reasonable laws, and government involvement is limited to making laws and regulations within reason to protect its citizens, economy, etc. For example, you would not see a democratic nation forbidding speaking
I would say that this is quite an accurate representation of my political ideology. Despite not having all the same views as the majority of this group holds, I deeply align with many of them. For example, this group is slightly more conservative and leans toward the Republican party, but holds the opinions of both parties, which is an accurate assessment. I believe that I am mostly conservative, but I also hold a lot of mixed views espoused by both political parties. The Young outsiders are largely skeptical of activist government, which I believe to be true, which proves the quiz results accurate. Environmental and liberal social policies are also supported by this group, many of which I also support, once again, consistent with my results. This evidence proves that I am consistently aligned as a Young Outsider based upon my own personal views which agrees with the results of the typology
However, most of the candidates running for office do not support my beliefs other than Bernie Sanders. As mentioned in class, Texas falls under the purple quadrant, which doesn't make me a “True Texan”. I am, however a strong believer in the belief of social and economic freedom for each person. I was not too surprised by what I received on the quiz. I had a feeling that I would receive libertarian, but not necessarily left libertarian. I can now consider myself a bit of a left libertarian. A left libertarian is someone who likes libertarianism primarily for its commitment to social freedoms. I support liberty and freedom in all walks of American life, but I am mainly concerned with social freedoms. I also believe that while it is important
During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Europe many forms of government were created. Two efficient systems of government, Democracy and absolutism, were common during this time period; all around Europe. Democracy is a system of government that the people or citizens take part of government affairs by voting. The other system of government that was more efficient at its time was absolutism. Absolutism is a system of government that only one ruler controls the government and rule over people's lives. Conversy had struck and many questions were asked; which system of government was more efficient - Democracy or Absolutism? The more efficient one is Absolutism, it assisted Louis XIV to run his government and helped many other
Even though, libertarianism and liberal contractarianism both believe in promoting individual rights, they have many differences. Libertarianism believes in liberty, and freedom as the main principals, whereas, liberal contractarianism main principal is equality. There is no surprise that both libertarianism and liberal contractarianism would have different views on raising the minimum wage.
A liberal was mostly middle class people that were either business leaders or merchants. What they wanted was to give more power to the highest chosen legislature. But only educated people and landowners could vote. A conservative were usually wealthy property owners and noble people. They argued for protecting the traditional monarchies of Europe. These two groups debated issues of government, they created a new movement that was called nationalism. Nationalism was having pride in your country and having pride in your ethnic group. Liberals led the struggle for constitutional government and the formation of nation states. Liberals in other large empires wanted to split and set up self-rule. By the 1830's liberals and nationalists throughout
The test results of my political compass test were that I am a moderate libertarian. This means that I share the ideas of libertarians but to an extent. I was also close to being an authoritarian by small margin meaning that my ideals are not entirely in line with libertarians at all. As a matter of fact, the dot was actually closest to the center meaning that I am somewhat a balance between the two political ideologies. However, my choice in Part 1 aligns very much with my results from my political compass test. The Moderate libertarian believes that the government should focus on what it needs to, but nothing more. It says that the people should rely on itself and only itself. They believe that the government should have nothing to do with
Is there not benefits to both absolutism and democracy? A ruler leads with a firm hand to keep their citizens under its power. A ruler’s duty is to protect the citizens right and freedoms. Absolutism is the political doctrine and practice of unlimited, centralized, authority and absolute sovereignty, is vested especially in a monarchy or dictatorship. A monarch’s authority to govern should be limited by the people, because natural rights need to be protected, citizens need to be allowed to speak freely, and the law should promote equality.
In America, there are three major civic stances: conservatism, liberalism, and libertarianism. The liberal stance is the only stance, which offers the foundation to move forward. The following paper will briefly explain, certain aspects of conservatism and libertarianism, and will advance the idea, America must move forward with a more liberal attitude. At heart, this writing will argue a strong government is of the utmost importance in moving this country forward to the future. While other political agendas advocate liberty and freedom, the liberal stance truly offers a realistic approach and method of achieving those aspects of American life.
Before speaking on Liberal constitutionalism and liberal absolutism, you must first speak on Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, who support these concepts. Thomas Hobbes and John Locke were both English scholars. With his book Leviathan, which we read some of in clas, Thomas Hobbes examined the social contract theory. This same theory was later upheld and deciphered further by John Locke. Additionally, this theory which was imperative to the two scholars, clarifies the relationship between the state and the person. Furthermore, Thomas Hobbes and John Locke were supporters of liberalism.
