Having to watch a best friend die would be on of the worst fates imaginable, but having to be the one to kill them is indescribable. The story of Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck ends with this scene for the two main characters, George and Lennie. Of Mice and Men is about an unlikely pair of friends, ranch hands looking for work during the Great Depression to finance their dream. George and Lennie struggle to find jobs because of Lennie’s mental disability and inability to grasp what is right and wrong. Finally the two manage to get jobs and are close to achieving their dream when things go wrong. Lennie accidentally kills another ranch hand's wife when he “had broken her neck” (Steinbeck, 91). George is forced to face the truth that he cannot …show more content…
In the article “Millionaire admits to ‘mercy killing’ of autistic son” a woman killed her son because he was suffering from autism. The woman, Gigi Jordan, confessed to killing her son in court and claims it was “a ‘mercy killing’ to spare him from abuse at the hands of almost half a dozen people” (Rosenberg, 2). Gigi Jordan was convinced that she was doing the right thing by killing her son, but was still sent to jail because she was the one to plan and kill him. She did what she thought was right in killing her son and was punished for it. If murder is defined as the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another, then Gigi Jordan did that exactly. She planned to kill her son, an act she knew was illegal, and then carried out her ideas. This was not a mercy killing, this was a murder that was planned out by a woman who thought she was doing the right thing. George thought he was doing the right thing by killing Lennie, that he was doing it in order to save him from a horrible fate, but in the end George was still the one to plan and kill his best friend, which makes him a …show more content…
A woman named Brittany Maynard chose to end her life after being diagnosed with a fatal brain tumor in the article “Death With Dignity Advocate Brittany Maynard Dies in Oregon”. “Brittany chose to make a well thought out and informed choice to Die With Dignity in the face of such a terrible, painful, and incurable illness” (NBC News) making her case is a textbook example of a mercy killing. Maynard was suffering from a serious disease that was not curable, and chose to end her own life out of her own free will. In Of Mice and Men Lennie may have had a mental disorder, but he was still able to function doing daily tasks, his disability had the potential to get better and did not cause him pain. In another article, “Mercy killing, suicide: ‘Social challenges’ to be faces as U.S. ages”, a man named John Wise killed his wife in what was thought to be “part of a “death pact” promise to prevent her from suffering” (Lynch, 1). John Wise and his wife came to an agreement to end her life, she was suffering from an incurable illness and choose to have her life ended by someone she loved. Lennie was not given the choice to end his life like Brittany Maynard had, and had not priorly agreed with George on ending his life like John Wise. Lennie’s death cannot be a mercy kill because he did not get the chance to reflect on
Known as mercy killings, theses deaths/killings are believed to be the most logical choice in cases such as Lennie and George’s. Brittany Maynard of California was diagnosed with
Many families have gone through this tough decision. In the article, “Mercy Killing is Not a Crime Endash; It is a Brave and Selfless Act of Love,” France Inglis killed her son at age 22 after months of watching him suffer. The was put in this state from falling “from an ambulance and hit his head on the pavement” (A N Wilson). With no hope left of him recovering, “His brave mother, who is studying for a nursing diploma, tried to kill him by the injection of pure heroin” (A N Wilson). This was not an act of hate or selfish reasons, but out of love for her son, and didn't want him to suffer longer than he already has. After being arrested for attempting to mercy kill her son, she tried again, this time successful. “I held everything was going to be fine, that he will be fine. I hoped he had died. He was very peaceful” (A N Wilson). This quote makes it certain that this was done with pure love, “If Tom Inglis had been starved to death and agonisingly deprived of water until he died of thirst and dehydration, that act of cruelty would have been within the law” (A N
While mercy and murder do have some similarities there is one huge difference, mercy killing has consent, murder does not. Sometimes it is as clear as day if it is murder or mercy. One of these times was when a twenty nine year old “Brittany Maynard fulfilled her final wish… purposely ending her own life on her own schedule…” (Briggs). This is very different from what happens in Of Mice and Men By: John Steinbeck where George kills Lennie without his consent. In Of Mice and Men George and Lennie are best friends that go on the road with each other looking for jobs. They end up working at a ranch and made some friends and some enemies. Throughout this story it is shown that Lennie is mentally disabled and is obsessed with petting soft objects,
The murder case of Lennie Smalls is currently deeply being further investigated. High speculations grow of George Milton intentionally murdering him counted as 1st degree murder or proven innocent as mercy killing. 1st degree murder is also known as unlawful, planned killing meaning a murder was committed after planning or lying in wait for the killing to begin. Mercy killing (also known as euthanasia) is when someone legally kills someone because the person that is getting killed thinks it’s their best interest to relieve their agony and to end their terminal, irremediable condition.
Two girls died the other day, one sadly took her own life while the other’s life was taken from her brutally. Everybody's upset, putting up suicide prevention posters and talking about how this is terrible and being sorry for the families who lost a loved one. Someone else ended their life through the process of Euthanasia, yet the third death was accepted and was hardly talked about. In Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, one of the main characters, George, is faced with a decision to kill his friend Lennie. George has a hard time doing so because he has known Lennie for so long. In the end George decides that it would be best if he killed Lennie, in a form called Euthanasia, instead of Curley brutally killing him. Euthanasia, also known as mercy killing, is when a doctor kills a patient painlessly because they have no more desire to live. Therefore, mercy killing is cruel and an unnecessary practice that seems to be very similar to a suicide and homicide.
Barack Obama and George Miller from Of Mice and Men exemplify the aspect of Hope and plans for the future within the american dream.
Americans often try to seek happiness through their success. In Steinbeck’s book Of Mice and Men, and Fitzgerald’s book The Great Gatsby both stories express the characters admiration of achieving the American dream. Both stories explain with example how setting, relationships, and Cause and effect all play a role in the destiny of each character’s American dream.
The common emotion these two dogs caused the narrator was embarrassment. In paragraph one, it talks about a Scotch terrier that had puppies out in the public. This states, “...my moment of keenest embarrassment was the time a Scotch terrier named Jeannie, who had just had six puppies...had the unexpected seventh and last at the corner of Eleventh Street and Fifth Avenue…” This would be quite embarrassing just due to the fact that it took place on a street corner. While the narrator’s dog was having its seventh and final puppy, there were people walking, biking, and driving cars. Lots of people would have seen this which would be a huge embarrassment to practically anybody. Also, in paragraph two it clearly states that the other dog, a large
It also is true that people like George, Gigi Jordan and John Wise had reasons behind what they did, out of respect and sympathy for their loved one, specifically for Wise about his wife,“she hadn’t verbalized anything, but I think it’s fair to say he felt for the first time he was making some connection with her, and what he saw was agony, desperation and pain,”(Qtd. In Rivera). Experiencing that probably made him feel very heartbroken and quote,“he wanted to make life as easy as possible for her,” (Qtd. in Rivera). Though it is true that he made his wife’s life as easy as possible for her it could be argued that she never directly told him that she wanted to die because of her pain. It could be acknowledged in the article that, “They both made it clear they did not want to be maintained on life support,” and “she could die at any time or she could linger for an unspecified period of time,” (Qtd. in Rivera). If he knew she didn’t have very much time to live and they made it clear that neither of them wanted to go on life support, why did he kill her? It is legal for a hospital to let someone die if they do not want to be put on life support or is DNR (do not resuscitate) because they have a license to do so, however, it is illegal for a person to murder another person. Wise’s unfortunate event, his gun getting
“Warren Lee Hill, a man with an IQ of 70, Was put to death Tuesday despite international protests that Georgia was executing a man with a child’s intellect.” Both Warren Hill and Lennie Small from John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, suffered the same fate of death. Both men suffering from Mental Retardation. George Milton murdering Lennie and, Georgia wrongfully “executing” Warren. Some people believe George was justified because he killed Lennie out of love, and it was the right thing to do for that certain moment in time. However, the opposite is true because George was not justified and should be punished for killing Lennie because he didn’t let the police handle the issue, Lennie is like a child in his own way and shouldn’t face death, And they could have just locked him in jail or prison instead of taking a life.
Carlson had three main reason to shoot Candy’s dog it stunk, it was old, and was in pain according to him. The dog stunk up the bunkhouse so the guys couldn't sleep at night. The dog could barely walk and looked terrible and filled with pain. So Carlson said “i'll take him out back and shoot him, won't even feel a thing”. At first candy was not going to let him shoot him but realized it was for the better.
“Robert Tennards IQ is 67-low enough that he is considered barely educable by most standards. But a Texas court said that alone does not prove he is retarded enough to avoid the death penalty for a 1985 murder” (Stephen Henderson). The killing of Lennie is justified because, if Lennie hadn't of died, he would go to jail, then they would be able to see if he is or is not retarded enough to avoid the death penalty as well. Death or prison.
Nelson Mandela, the first black president of South Africa, once stated that “we owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear.” Mandela’s belief reveals that society has a great influence on the minds of its youth. If children are protected from a life of violence, they will grow up to be a strong, healthy, and ideal representation of our world; in contrast, if the youth are exposed to violence and fear, they themselves will become destructive. Books, for instance, are a common influence on the youth due to their varying content. A case in point of books’ effects on young adults is the controversy over John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men because
Sometimes decisions are like a drug addiction. You know the choice you need to make (quit for crying out loud!) ,but it may be harder than you choose to think. You know you need to quit smoking cigarettes, it’s taking you down a path to life terminating lung cancer. However, you refuse to jump the derailing train, because your need is stronger than your desire to quit. Because Lennie’s time was out and his train was about to go hurtling off the track, George made the right decision to spare Lennie from the suffering that would’ve followed, and I believe that this was the right decision.
In the case of assisted suicide killing another is a justifiable act. According to the article.“What’s so difficult about the right to die”, “Assisted suicide is not a private decision only, it’s about the worth of people’s lives and whether we think those lives are worth living”(Wente). This evidence is important because it is not someone else’s choice if someone wants to die or if they should die, if they feel as if their life is not worth living, why force them to live if they don’t want to . Another example is “it says that people with ‘grievous and irremediable’ suffering are entitled to assisted death”(Wente). If someone is suffering we shouldn’t make them keep suffering in constant pain.
