The premise of Intertextuality, as explained in "How to Read Literature Like a Professor" by Thomas C. Foster, is that 'anything you write is connected to other written things' (page 197, HTRLLAP). Using 'allusions and references and parallels' (page 31, HTRLLAP), all written works can be connected to another, rather it be poems, novels, movies, plays, etc. This is definitely true for Paulo Coelho's book "The Alchemist." Just one of the many intertexutual comparisons that can be made is with the book "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe. In "Things Fall Apart," the main character Okonkwo has a large fear of failure, one that the main character of "The Alchemist" Santiago shares. When the Alchemist forces Santiago to try to turn himself into
“I want to stay at the oasis,” the boy answered. “I’ve found Fatima and as far as I am concerned, she’s worth more than treasure.” Everyone knows what they want to do, but they are afraid of hurting those around them by abandoning everything in order to pursue our dream. Some do not realize that love is something to impel us, not something that will prevent us to go further. Those that genuinely wish us well want us to be happy and are prepared to accompany us on that journey. After hearing the Alchemist’s predictions and Fatima saying that he should go, Santiago decided to accompany the Alchemist and pursue his personal legend. Santiago overcame his problem when his father told him he can not travel, and he also perused his personal legend and did not hurt Fatima.
One's goals are never reached unless we are willing to face fears. The proverb totally applies to his situation as things become their very worst before they get better. The alchemist left Santiago alone because every person's journey is an individual one; no one can help you realize your own dreams.

The alchemist is a well written book that accurately describes every concept about life and explains it through a story. The Alchemist is a book about a shepherd named Santiago, who discovers his personal legend and receives help from others to help achieve his Personal Legend and learns many major life lessons along the way. Santiago gets advice that when life puts him down, keep getting back up and to focus on the task at hand, which is Santiago’s own personal legend. Along the the journey, Santiago receives help from many different characters but only three characters who helped him the most throughout his quest for his Personal legend is the alchemist, the Old King and the Englishman. The best advice a reader is able to gain from this story is the advice the the Old King taught Santiago, which is” there is only one thing that makes achieving a dream impossible to achieve, the fear of failure” which means is to never be afraid of failures and to follow your own path God has laid out for you because if you are too afraid to pursue your personal legend, meaning if people are too afraid to take risks to make their own life better than it already is now, then they will not have the opportunity to accomplish their own goals. In Coelho's The Alchemist, Santiago learns the Soul of the World through experience, patience, time and help from the Old King, the Englishman and the alchemist.

These elements are used in Life of Pi to develop its compelling story about growing up.
Reaching a goal is something that people have experienced a lot with. A goal is an objective we all have, whether it is long-term or short-term in school, or out, we all had one. A Personal Legend, on the other hand, is a step deeper than the definition of a goal. A Personal Legend is a life journey one desires to accomplish. When accomplishing the Personal Legend, people commonly think about the destination, and the overall product. As a matter of fact, people gain much more from the journey took in order to be able to attain the goal. Throughout one’s journey to seek their Personal Legend, they learn and notice more about the world around them. This way, the journey is much more valuable than the destination itself. In the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Walter learns that it is better for him to live outside of what is his personal comfort zone. Throughout his journey he learns how to feel, and become a better person, which did also adapt his way of living and understanding. Throughout Santiago’s Personal Legend from the book, The Alchemist, he learns about the soul of the world, true love, and how the journey is much more important than his treasure. Because of this, Santiago changes his own way of living, with a deeper understanding of what is around him. Both of the characters have gained a lot of information throughout their expeditions, realizing that the outcome wasn’t as important as it seemed. Walter, for instance, gained a great deal of information
When considering the novels Lord of the Flies by William Golding and Life of Pi by Yann Martel, the reader notices that they do not appear to be similar despite both being stories of becoming stranded and rescued. However, both books contain elements of religion that dramatically change the way each novel affects the reader. The reason that the characters in Lord of the Flies regress into evil behaviors and the main character in Life of Pi does not is due to a difference in devotion to religion.
On its surface, Martel’s Life of Pi proceeds as a far-fetched yet not completely unbelievable tale about a young Indian boy named Pi who survives after two hundred twenty-seven days on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. It is an uplifting and entertaining story, with a few themes about companionship and survival sprinkled throughout. The ending, however, reveals a second story – a more realistic and dark account replacing the animals from the beginning with crude human counterparts. Suddenly, Life of Pi becomes more than an inspiring tale and transforms into a point to be made about rationality, faith, and how storytelling correlates the two. The point of the book is not for the reader to decide which
Christopher Columbus who was a famous Italian explorer, once head out in search of India but landed in America, a completely new and undiscovered land by the Europeans. In order for human kind to survive the painfully realistic days of existence, a sort of belief system is direly needed.
