How To Repair Your Concrete Walkway So It's Safe And Attractive

The walkway to your front door should be kept in good condition so it doesn't ruin the appearance of your home. Repairing cracks is important so no one trips and falls on your property. Falling on concrete could break a bone or cause a head injury. You could even get sued for not maintaining your walkway properly and creating a hazard. Here are a few tips for repairing cracks in your concrete walkway and improving its appearance.

Fill In The Cracks

You can probably fill in small cracks yourself. Start by cleaning your walkway to get rid of sand and dirt. Focus on getting debris and weeds out of all the cracks. You can buy concrete crack filler in a squeeze container that's easy to use. Just squeeze the filler into the crack and scrape off the excess, so the surface is level. Filling big cracks takes a little more work. To get the filler to adhere properly, you'll need to widen the bottom of the crack. With the bottom wider than the top, the filler will be trapped in place.

Grinding the higher side of the crack will make your walkway even again, and it is much less expensive than tearing out part of the sidewalk and putting in new concrete. The contractor can grind away all raised portions of your sidewalk so it is level and safe. The contractor can fill in the cracks and apply a coating on the concrete to restore its appearance, or leave that job to you.
