Conflict Theory On Society And Human Behavior

Karl Marx was the founder of the Marxist approach. It is similar to the functionalist approach. Marx believed that, like Parson’s, society shaped individuals’ behaviour and that the economy decides an individuals’ place within society. He said that the two classes were; bourgeoisie/capitalists and the proletariat. The bourgeoisie were the people who owned factories and businesses that employed people (the proletariats) to work for them. There were many proletariats and fewer bourgeoisies. Marx claimed that there would always be conflict between the two classes because the proletariats wanting higher wages while the bourgeoisies, who have lots of power over the media, legal system and school curricula, want to keep wages low to increase profits. This conflict leads to this approach being called a conflict model, explaining why there would be conflict within society and explaining the cause of revolution. False consciousness occurs because the bourgeoisie shape society without the proletariats being aware of it.

There are roughly 800,000 people living within the United States that is under the protection of an executive order during the Obama administration called Deferred Action Against Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. These children, commonly referred to as “Dreamers,” have grown up in the United States. They attended elementary school here, many graduated high school here, and many went on to become successful adults living in the United States, but as of September 5th, 2017 the DACA program was shut down by the Trump administration, pending a trial in Congress. This means that those hundreds of thousands of individuals living under the DACA arm will no longer be legal residents in the United States.

Strucutral functionalism is a form of functional analysis. Functional analysis (or functionalism) is one of the major theoretical perspectives in sociology. In fact, many of the early giants of sociology, such as Spencer, Comte, and Durkheim were functionalists. Essentially, this perspective sees society as comprised of many parts that contribute in unique ways to the operation of the whole society.

A conflict can start when a person or group feels hatred or jealousy against a family, race, or country. This is what usually drives a person to lash out and hurt others. When this happens, it can affect people in many ways. My question is, how does conflict affect us individually?

In this theory analysis, I will discuss two theories to explain why officers commit callous acts, why they tend to use excessive force against certain types of citizens and why there are only a few officers who perform these acts. Over the years police departments have received a considerable amount of public scrutiny due to their use of excessive force. As discussed before, police serve a vital part in society as prosecutors; however, police brutality is very common. One may ask, why do some law enforcement officers participate in abusive behavior against citizens, despite knowing their obligation to ensure the public safety? Using two theories, social conflict and control balance I will attempt answer that question.

The contemporary social issue I have selected is the discrimination of Muslims in America. I selected this issue because it appears to be a growing problem in the United States, and I believe it is rooted in racism, making it a two-part issue. Muslim is not a race, but in many Middle Eastern countries, Islam is the majority religion. Even though anyone from any race could be Muslim, it is only Middle Eastern Muslims that are targeted. As someone who is in the social work field, it is distressing for me to see a group of people be treated unjustly and experience many societal challenges based on their faith and race. Conflict theory is one theory that can improve people’s understanding of this issue. One of the main concepts of conflict theory is that “power is unequally divided and some groups dominate others” (Overview of Theories, 2008). Conflict perspectives are often viewed as the opposite of the structure-functional viewpoint; meaning, not all family practices are good or beneficial for each family member. Conflict is often viewed in a negative manner, but there are many benefits of having healthy conflict in the home. In my family experience, conflict has brought compromise, solutions, and opportunities to learn other's perspectives. Conflict has also brought a better understanding of how to improve relationships and solve disagreements.

The functionalist theory is a sociological approach emphasizing how parts of a society are structured to maintain its stability. An example of this is racist beliefs discouraging a minority group from trying to question their lower status in order to maintain stability. Another example of functionalist theory is racial ideologies justifying and encouraging existing practices for social movement. Conflict theory is an approach that assumes that the social structure is understood the most in terms of conflict or tension between minority and majority groups. An example of this is an idea called blaming the victim.

“The ethos of conflict has over the decades become a catalyst for an ethos of hate,” Page 280. Ethos means “the configuration of central societal shared beliefs that provide a particular dominant orientation to a society.” This means that ethos is a set of goals and beliefs that help define and keep a society together. It also creates a sense of social identity for a country and its people. Those beliefs stem from the history of the area and the people of the land, and history often shapes the present and future conditions and beliefs. An ethos of conflict comes into play when conflict with another, in this case country, has been so on going that the animosity shapes the societies beliefs and actions. Fruitvale Station is a movie that has the capability to bring many emotions to the surface. This movie can foster critical thinking, but it can also draw the viewer in to experience the raw emotions and suspenseful moments of this real life story. Unfortunately, Oscar Grant’s life was ended abruptly after he spent the night celebrating the New Year with his friends and girlfriend, Sophina. From this story, it is clear that Oscar was attempting to change his story by being a better father to his daughter, Tatiana, thinking about marrying Sophina, and better providing for his family by getting a stable job and being a man that his mother and sister could rely upon. While the incident that occurred at Fruitvale Station could be analyzed from any variety of theories, this paper will examine these events from the lens of Conflict Theory and Social Learning Theory. These theories intertwine in many ways, but they also differ from each other in very important aspects. Fruitvale Station is a cinema depiction of a true story involving the death of Oscar Grant in a train station in Oakland, California during the early morning hours of January 1, 2009. This incident has sparked many civil rights related protests and discussions. Oscar Grant was survived by his mother, who has been very vocal since the incident, fighting for equal rights for minorities, his sister, and his daughter, Tatiana (Johnson).

Conflict theory is the theory that human behavior in social contexts is the result of conflicts between competing groups, as different social groups, be they class-, gender- or race-defined, have unequal power and access to power, yet all groups compete for limited resources. This inevitably gives rise to tension and conflict, albeit often of the subtle variety, as oftentimes the conflicts between groups have been institutionalized in society to such a degree that the conflicts and tensions are such an expected part of society that the conflict, and inequality, itself disappears from public sight, and consciousness. For example, an adherent of a world systems theory of conflict would point to the global competition for resources, particularly the inequality between rich and poor nations struggling to provide the basic necessities of life to their inhabitants, as evidence of global conflict. Conflict theories seek to explain the interactions of groups within society, and assert that social order is preserved involuntarily through the exercise of power one social class holds over another (Lindsey, 2010, 7). The conflict between groups is not always obvious or apparent, so it must be unraveled and examined in order to identify and establish the impact of such conflict on society as a whole, as well as individual members and social groupings.

Intergroup Competition is the idea that social groups will extend from the desire for a group to gain the scarce resources that exist (36-40). This idea is greatly supported by the segment on affirmative action in the video (36-40). As said in the movie, the idea is that scholarship money and grant money is a scarce resource when students decide to go to college (37-40). In this view, the individuals who are against affirmative action are competing for that scarce resource (36-40). By using techniques like affirmative action and racial and/or ethnic based scholarships present the subordinate group’s strive for power, and the arguments against these resources are the dominant group’s attempt to maintain their power (36-40). Moreover, the strive to gain these programs is not just for their own individual self interest, but is for the interest of their social group as a whole to maintain the group’s desires (36-40). It is in this belief that’s the Realistic Conflict Theory resides (36-40). In this, their exists the view that this conflict for scarce resources subsequently produces prejudice, in which a privileged group has a sense of group position and strives to protect it (36-40). This is a research about conflict which should be considered and resolute during a project. Although, six experts are from different background, there are many sufficient methods to deal with different kind of issues during the working. The great mode has used in the research is Thomas-Kilmann’s conflict mode instrument. (Thomas, K. W., & Kilmann, R. H. ,1974). There are five effective approaches are discussed. Each approaches have its positive and negative effects. Also, there are many problems that each expert should consider about themselves which can devote their effort to help finish the project successfully. Achieving mastery through a comprehensive study of all of these methods can finally bring a huge success to the whole project.

Marxist History is therefore, that interpretation of history on the basis of not only social and political factors but also economic factors. Marxist historians asserted that poverty and diseases of the poor people are as a result of social classes and conditions under which peasants lived and worked.9 The base of man’s problems was to be found in the division of society into classes. Therefore, in order building a society with no exploitation is only dependant on the forceful removal of the capitalist system. At the centre of radical history is the argument that the historical analysis of man’s progress and development is meaningless unless that analysis puts into consideration the economic and social relations aspect.10 This is unlike liberal history which only emphasizes the social and political factors in the analysis of man’s development.
