1984 by George Orwell is a novel that takes place in a dystopian society from which the main character, Winston Smith, attempts to break free from. There are many conflicts in 1984 that influence the outcome of the novel. Winston is a courageous and intelligent character that has the initiative to do his part to change the ways of Oceana’s society, with the government controlling the people and exhibiting dominance over all aspects of their lives. To challenge the ways of the Party, Winston completes various acts that instill a sense of individuality and self-awareness in himself. The main conflicts of this novel consist of Winston’s internal conflict with democracy and totalitarianism, and when Winston and his love interest, Julia, are caught rebelling. The major effects of the conflicts in this novel show the helplessness of citizens living with a totalitarian government through Winston’s evident failure to reach his goal of freedom for all. Winston represents the best in humankind, but the initial internal conflicts he faces are too much to bear and in the end, exhausted and beaten, he submits entirely, giving his "mind" over to the Party. In 1984, Big Brother is the embodiment of all the ideals of the totalitarian party. The Party controls every source of information that citizens are able to obtain, and all of their individual thoughts.
