Confucianism And Taoism Similarities

Like many religions there are similar and different aspects associated with them. To start, let’s look at the difference between Confucianism & Taoism. Confucianism is concerned primarily with ones relationship with others, & Taoism is primarily concerned with ones relationship with nature. Taoism, or as some people say, Daoism, is about a cryptic force, that is more about feeling than knowing. One of my favorite Taoist principles is that, by doing nothing everything is done. Confucianism is a religion that is focused around improving society and bettering relationships. It does this by giving moral incentives for people to conduct themselves properly. Although the great focus of Confucianism is to make society harmonious, it also focuses on learning to be human, the self-factor. We are here to have own ideas and travel our own paths, not just to conduct ourselves properly and fulfill our duties within our social class. In retrospect this could impede society’s improvement, as there is limited freedom in what one can do. If everyone behaved properly, everything would move routinely, there would be no real greatness or true advancement in society. Proper conduct is a promising concept, but if it were to be taken too literally, there would be no change in social status and people would be locked in their positions. Some will find that although Taoism gives plenty of space for the mind to open up to the surroundings, Confucianism gives a more direct guidance to their lives at the moment. This way a person can both know what to do now and try to understand the natural effects. In this way Confucianism and Taoism are like yin and yang - they work together to give a better religious foundation for the follower. So in fact they do complement one another like Yin and Yang.
