Confucius lived from 551 to 479 BCE, he was born in the middle of suffering; the dynasty at the time was full of corruption and the citizens were in need of a leader who would help and restore their hope. Confucius was born in a fairly noble family, but remained humble throughout his life. He did not have the luxury that aristocrats had, but he desired to become educated. Once he was educated, he tried the official life, but it did not satisfy him and he believed that this job was not for him. He realized that he was only doing this job because of the name and resigned due to not being able to adequately perform his job to the fullest. This led him to becoming a teacher. Someone who has attained ren has become a sage.
According to this time period, Confucius had not come across any sages; therefore, he looked to the past for good rulers as example. Because of the current state of China, Confucius believed it was extremely important for people to achieve ren and have someone in the political world to lead with great virtue, compassion, loyalty to its citizens and be empathetic towards humans. A sage who has achieved ren is a virtuous person and will attain ren by helping others attain ren. Ren is found in the social bonds one makes when interacting with people. Someone who has achieved ren has the ability of having human-heartedness.
Confucius conveys the principle of Zhong or loyalty with having filial piety, a moral hierarchy and presents the idea of the rectification of names. The principle of loyalty is regarded to be feeling genuine submission to one’s superior but this “moral obligation applies to all roles and all people” (Liu, 2006, p. 49). Being higher in the hierarchy does not mean superiority but rather it only follows that there is a hierarchy needed in society and everyone in different roles with peace and order still intact. Loyalty is fulfilling one’s role to its truest and maintaining one’s role. The rules of propriety, Li, are rules that teach one how to interact with people.
