Continuing My Job Search At The Kentucky Derby

Continuing my job search in my current state would rank among the worst decisions I could make today. Looking for work has been tiresome and fruitless enough without the ache of last night’s bad judgment pounding in my head like racehorses at the Kentucky Derby. I force myself out of bed, take a blazing hot shower, and put on an oversized SFSU sweatshirt. I have just enough energy left to flop onto the couch, cuddling a fuzzy blanket from the hall closet. After maybe a couple of hours, my rumbling stomach awakens me. I trudge to the kitchen and find two aspirin and a Saran-wrapped sandwich on the counter. Despite the lingering traces of a headache, it’s a relief to know not much time has passed since I downed all those gingersnap shots I regretted this morning. I can’t say I fault Eva’s taste in men. I am, however, now extremely aware of the fact that I’m not wearing pants. “I’m not Kay, I’m Chloe.” I try to sound indifferent as I open the door and sit back on the couch, which squeaks against my legs. I play it off with a grin. “Eva’s due home any minute, so feel free to wait up.” It wouldn’t hurt if I get to stare at this guy for a little while longer, before Eva sinks her purple claws into him again. He remains standing in the door frame, avoiding my eyes. “Eva only mentioned the one roommate.” “Funny how she forgets I paid as much rent as she did this month,” I mutter. The guy’s face screws up with confusion. “I’m still more of a house guest. I just moved in, but I might have to find another place if I can’t get a job in the next couple of weeks. Or maybe live in my car.” “Oh.” The corners of his mouth turn down slightly. “Is that why you’re sleeping on the couch?” “Nah.” I wave a hand. “You can blame last night for that. Billy Edwards knows how to party, doesn’t he?” “You were at Billy’s party? Why didn’t I see you?” “I was on the roof most of the time. I only saw you when I came in for more shots.
