Political corruption in the United States is present an at least one of the three branches of government in all fifty states but is most common in the Legislative branch. Ending political corruption is nearly impossible because public officials will always find a loophole in the existing laws but reducing corruption is possible. The most efficient way to dramatically reducing political corruption is by targeting the Legislative branch of the United States government. Two members of Congress are trying to exactly do that by proposing a law, At the federal level, that would impose term limits on members of Congress. Senator Ted Cruz and Representative Ron DeSantis are both pushing an amendment to be added to the United States Constitution which would impose term limits on members of the House of Representative and the Senate. Political corruption in the legislative branch of the federal government is a problem because members of Congress will favor special interest rather than their constituent. A law that was passed at the federal level to try solving this problem is the “Honest Leadership and Open Government Act” and a proposed law at the state level Ohio "Strengthening Term Limits on State Legislators" Amendment but both laws don't go far enough. By Imposing term limits on Congress it will help reduce political corruption because it will constantly bring new faces to Congress which will make it harder for special interest to have a “grip” on Congress. Congressional term
Government exists to serve the people, and not the politicians, American citizens know this. Polls show that Americans want term limitation by margins as high as three-to-one, even four-to-one. Congressional term
Living in the present and looking back at the past, we as citizens see what has worked and what can be improved; Congress is a good example of this. Some may say that Congress is a failure and some may be happy and proud of the way it functions and runs our country. For those who do not approve of it, the idea is to start fresh and get new ideas, people and habits into office. With the way Congress works today, that may not be the easiest tasks. In order to make changes in Congress, time is needed; a significant change cannot be made over night and expect it to run smoothly. One of the ways to bring change and settle the debate of whether or not to ‘restart Congress’ is to set term limits on congressional members. There should be term
Term limits, thus provide an escape from the Faustian bargain that voters face: they know that returning an incumbent for another term may help their district, but in the long run it has dire institutional and national consequences. Voters realize even though the Congressman is doing good things for their district soon they will need someone new. They know long-term officeholders become less vulnerable because they come gradually to identify their interests more and more with those of the federal government. There is a strong relationship between length of legislative service and votes in favor of more public expenditures.
The Progress movement or as many refer to as the Progressive era, was a time frame where Americans joined in varying groups to advocate reform across the United States. To elaborate, Progressives believed in widespread change for child labor, industrialization, government, racial reform, and women’s rights. Countless stories of corruption in these areas were brought to light in the Progressive era mostly due to the published writings of Muckrakers. Muckrakers, were journalists who wrote for popular magazines that attempted to expose corrupt political activities from their investigative journalism. Furthermore, I will discuss and compare these groups and their attempts for changes in the rights of child labor, women, acknowledgment of corrupt government practices, racial relations, and industrialization reform.
There is a lot of argument regarding the issue of term limits, in which a service in elective office after a fixed and specified number of terms is directed. The idea of issuing term limits is not only a damage to the Constitution, but also a quick fix to a problem that may just end up affecting severe outcomes down the line. Authorizing term limits to deal with the corruption among congressmen is not a normal solution. If some parts of the system were dishonest, term limits would basically get cleared of everyone, those upsetting Congress both negatively and positively. At that juncture new representatives are selected and they become corrupt and are soon thrown out, and this cycle of continuing corruption will go on and on for a while, and would not be fixed. Likewise, the fact that term limit gives a
The 100th year anniversary of The Declaration of Independence is here and the Nation is as united as it is equal. None. Although football games continue like Princeton vs. Rutgers the United states is in shambles. Following the war between the states a plan to reconstruct was put into place. It was proficient, effective, and controversial for many years. However, after the long Civil War and years spent to rebuild the Nation, the North Ultimately killed reconstruction because of government corruption, the focus change in North, and widespread racism throughout the nation.
Corruption has no place in our government, period. The American people have a right to hold their elected officials to high ethical standards, and when their elected officials fail to meet such standards, the people have a responsibility to hold them accountable. In addition to standing for election every two years, Congress has ethics committee procedures it can utilize to censure or otherwise reprimand members who violate the rules. Members of Congress have to abide by the same laws as everyone else, and when laws are broken, they should be held accountable.
Texas is an interesting state when it comes to party affiliation because of the size of the state itself. On one hand, the state of Texas has 4 of the top 20 biggest cities in the United States including Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and Austin. With all of these large and mostly liberal cities, it is quite impressive that Texas has held onto top Republican offices since 1994. According to Will (2016) in his article, “A changing Lone Star State could change the GOP,” Texas is 84.7 percent urban, and, based on the history of urban states, they usually lean towards the Democratic Party affiliation. However, according to Sanhueza (2017) in his article “Why is Texas So Red, And How Did It Get That Way?,” with this urbanization the Republican party
No government is perfect and there is no perfect fix. One important step for democratic governments is to have a political efficacy in their citizens, for a robust and competent government. Keeping with this idea of efficacy, there has been a movement for political reform requesting to institute congressional term limits. This essay will address the concept of congressional term limits through research for and against the idea. The review will start with basic information and history of term limits, focus on the positive arguments for term limits, address the counter arguments for term limits, and conclude with an overall analysis of the findings of term limits and if the U.S. should have term limits.
A common belief across the United states is that congress is not performing as well as they could, or should, be. One solution that citizens often come to, is implement term limits for Congress. Unlike many political debates, this one cannot be clearly divided between republican and democratic viewpoints. Term limits would be a clear message to congress saying, ‘this is the amount of time you have to fix the problems facing this country, and if you cannot do that, we will replace you someone who can’. Though no longer on the federal political agenda, the desire for congressional term limits has steadily grown over time for many reasons. Among these lie the desires to push career politicians out of office, to build trust with the American people, and preventing any sort of greed that might occur in a longstanding politician.
Often times, politicians turn towards their own personal agenda, such as furthering their political career and enriching themselves, rather than focus on the reasons why their constituents elected them to be public servants to the people. In the case of Chaka Fattah, a former United States Democratic Representative for Philadelphia, where the man served in Congress for over 20 years was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for “orchestrating a series of frauds to enrich himself and boost his political career” (Ax). With such a limited amount of time that a Congressmen and Senators would have in office due to term limits, they would be less likely to fall into corruption and pursuing their own agenda and refocus on the issues that the people elected them to deal with and
Putting limits on the amount of terms a member of Congress can serve is a highly debated issue. Many people are against term limits. They argue that term limits are unconstitutional and that they infringe on the rights of the American people to choose who they want to represent their states. However, many people also argue that term limits would be beneficial. Term limits would be beneficial because it would put an end to career politicians, give new people a chance to solve the nation’s problems, and limit corruption.
Term limits would be a good thing for government corruption. If we had limits that stated how long terms could be served and how many there could be then it would definitely reduce corruption in the government. Term limits would keep people honest. They would be kept honest, so that senators and representatives don't have the time to create long lasting relationships with corrupt businesses and contractors.
To illustrate this, experts think that the longer a politician is in power, the more corupt he or she becomes. Additionally, term limits ensure that cogressional represetatives cannot turn their stay in office into a lifetime career. In short, term limits have been shown to reduce corruption, and therefore, should be kept in place. The final applicable point to make in favor of the position that politicians should still be subjected to term limits is that term limits keep an influx of fresh ideas.
To lessen the corruption in our Congress many Americans as will myself believe the answer to problem is congressional term limits.
