For my career I chose cosmetology. Cosmetology is the professional skill or practice of beautifying the face, hair, and skin. I chose this career because I would be able to work with a variety of people with different personalities. I would get to use the human body as an art canvas and the career offers a lot of variety because of its many branches.
Some of the job duties I would have is providing beauty services, such as shampooing, cutting, coloring, and styling hair, and massaging and treating scalp. May apply makeup, dress wigs, perform hair removal, and provide nail and skin care services. I am aware that while working in this industry I will work with many different ethnic groups and many different hair types. I feel I can do anything as long as I have the determination to do so. Doing my own research, I decided to go back to school and start at Valencia College which is one of the most affordable tuitions in florida. I started working on my basic courses required for a college degree. My plan is to keep going as far as I can with my degree. It was very hard to set my mind into school and being a full time mother of three kids and having a full time job. I choose my classes for my first semester and have to say it was very hard to complete but rewarding at the same time. It felt amazing knowing that I could complete

My interest in cosmetology and hair began to develop when I was around ten years old. I have always been in love with hair and makeup, and when I was ten I was finally old enough my stepmother brought me to the shop for the first time, and from that day forward at ten years old, I knew that this was my dream. Although I knew I loved hair and makeup, I knew that I had grown up wanting to be a teacher. Being a teacher is what my grandmother did, what seemed like the perfect occupation to pursue, something to go to college for, and the more stable and reliable option.
When I turned 38-years-old I wanted to make a change in my life. I was tired of working jobs that had me living from paycheck to paycheck. The only option I saw was to return to school to get some sort of formal training. I did not want to spend years in college, so I decided to go to a trade school. After some research, I became intrigued with the field of cosmetology. I liked the possibility of someday going into business for myself. I went for an orientation at a local beauty school, and I was sold on being able to complete the program in a year. I was overjoyed thinking that I would be soon be putting all those dead end jobs behind me. I thought becoming a cosmetologist would be life changing, and it would be, but not the way I envisioned.
Growing up I always use to like doing my hair, as well as my mothers and sisters hair. I began to do my own hair for school at the age of nine. About six months before I graduated high school, I participated in a fundraiser to support breast cancer /scholarship contest at Aveda Institute, which is a cosmetology school. I saw many creative and talented students at the event, it was amazing! I assumed it was a sign, so as soon as I graduated high school I registered at Aveda. I truly believed that cosmetology was what I wanted to make a career out of, because I enjoy making people feel more confident about their physical appearance. However, attending the institute emphatically demonstrated a sneak preview of what life had in store for me.
