The purpose and practice of assessment is the collection of information data in order to identify, classify, interpret, rate and respond to the problems or outstanding issues, and circumstances of clients in a counseling relationship. Assessment is used as a base for identifying a problem, coming out with interventions so as to help the clients in resolving and guiding them through their problem. (Cohen & Swerdlik, 2002) In accordance to Cohen (2002), client assessment must be taken in to a view as a process. When counselling a client, in accordance to ACA Code of Ethics (2014) the client have the right to answer any questions honestly but still retaining the right to the information that they want to disclose and what is to remain private. In the lights of career counselling assessment the counsellor must be wary and only ask questions that are needed for the assessment and that if there is privacy involved, they must only ask what they need to know and not explore too deep into what they do not need. Therefore, informing, obtaining the consent of the client and the relevancy of the assessment techniques in relations to the client.
As a counsellor, during the first appointment, the counsellor has to prepare himself before he begins his session with the new client. As stated in ACA (2014), the counsellor must first make himself aware of his or her own competency and also the limits of his competency.
