The Church’s significant change known as the Counter-Reformation spanned 100 years and was a drastic challenge to the Church, which has highly shaped the modern day Catholic Religion. It is said to be one of the most defying moments in Church history that changed how thousands of Catholics viewed their religion. However, in order to understand how this event has both positively and negatively impacted the Church, it’s necessary to know why exactly the Counter-Reformation occurred.
The Counter-Reformation began as a result of the original 1517 Protestant Reformation accidentally started by defiant religious reformers Martin Luther and John Calvin. According to Tangelder (2007) despite the fact Martin Luther and John Calvin never meet both religious figures influenced the Reformation. Luther’s nailing of his Nighty Five Thesis (viewable in appendix A) to a Wittenberg Castle Church in 1517 inspired reform (Anmerkungen, 2010). The Counter-Reformation started at the Council of Trent in 1545, which was a gathering of Church leaders with the aim to unite Catholicism. The Council was designed to solve the issue of many Christians leaving the Church. Old issues that had plagued the Churches past, such as abuse and rejection were reaffirmed by Pope Paul III. The Council eventually ended after twenty years of debates and was somewhat successful in changing the Church. New laws designed to please unhappy Catholics were implemented, such as the “Index of Forbidden Books”. The book contained a long list of approximately 583 texts, which were considered inappropriate towards the Catholic faith.
