Creating a healthy environment is critical for any baby’s well-being and healthy transition into this world. Teratogens are a main concern when creating a healthy atmosphere. For example, when my mother was pregnant with my brother, she did not understand the adverse effects on her baby’s development that smoking would create. Smoking was just routine for her, and the labels on the cigarettes as a fair warning didn’t change her opinion on smoking during her pregnancy. My father smoked as well. Even worse, a lot of the smoking occurred in the household, so smoke was always in the house and my mom was always breathing it in. Months went by during my mother’s pregnancy with her first child. Everything seemed to be going smoothly. Her baby …show more content…
It can create a disorder known as Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), which creates abnormalities such as facial deformities, defective face, limbs, and heart, learning disorders, and low intelligence. Even small amounts of alcohol can cause early pregnancy loss. Caffeine is also a teratogen that is easily accessible in sodas, coffee, teas, energy drinks, and even some chocolate. Doctors suggest being cautious when consuming small amounts of caffeine or even cutting it out of the prenatal diet completely. Caffeine seems to be the least harmful of the listed teratogens, as high amounts do not increase the risk of miscarriage and growth retardation. Both Cocaine and Meth are extremely harmful stimulants to prenatal children. Cocaine use during pregnancy lowers birth weight, head circumference, and length of the baby. Babies can be born with lower arousal, higher excitability, and lower quality of reflexes as well. Growing up, the baby can experience weakened motor development as well as a slower growth rate. Learning disabilities are also common, as well as behavioral problems. Marijuana also has negative consequences for children such as lower intelligence and an increased risk for the children using marijuana themselves by the age of 14. It is recommended that pregnant women do not use marijuana during their term or use any of the teratogens. Synergistic effects – that is, using or being around multiple teratogens is extremely
The science behind FAS is quite simple; as it is known that alcohol has a damaging effect on the body, it has similar consequences on the fetus. Since the fetus is constantly developing, the alcohol causes more serious defects to the unborn child. Alcohol exposure to a fetus is known as a teratogen. “Teratogens are substances or conditions that disrupt typical development in offspring as a result of gestational exposure and cause birth defects.” (Wilson & Fraser, 1977). Although the exposure to alcohol causes problems in the fetus, studies have shown that it may not accurately be the alcohol in the mother’s system that causes these defects, rather the byproducts that form when the body metabolizes the alcohol. This can lead to a decrease in brain cells, abnormal location of neurons, and gross malformation to the brain. Since alcohol causes this central nervous system damage, it is classified as a neurobehavioral teratogen, which is a group of teratogens that cause brain damage and modify behaviors. (Riley & Vorhees, 1986). The CNS damage is the primary defect due to alcohol and it is quite common to have these damages without any physical abnormalities. The more alcohol that is consumed the more birth defects that will arise in the
It is a proven fact that cocaine use during pregnancy leads to serious complications. Cocaine can cross the placenta and enters the baby’s body, where it stays for longer because the elimination system is not fully developed. It leads to various complications and cocaine use in any form should be avoided throughout the pregnancy.
Effects may vary depending on family structure, manifesting differently in individual family members; According to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse both alcohol and drugs can have dramatic negative effects on a developing fetus. They have been linked with premature birth, decreased head circumference, brain functioning difficulties and low
As stated earlier, alcohol has its greatest effect on the developing embryo during the first trimester of pregnancy with its teratogenic effect causing mental retardation as well as characteristic craniofacial abnormalities that are characteristic of the disease. It has also been demonstrated with experimental animal models that there is a clear "dose-response" effect between the amount of alcohol consumed by the mother and the risk that is associated with developing FAS symptoms (Walpole, p. 875). It has been proposed by Walpole and associates that there are various degrees to which the fetus An be effected. Walpole uses the term "fetal alcohol syndrome" to refer to serious effects due to heavy maternal drinking and "fetal alcohol effect" to refer to those effects thought to occur with lower maternal alcohol intake (Walpole, p. 875). Regardless of the degree to which
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is a series of mental and physical birth defects that can include mental retardation, growth deficiencies, central nervous system dysfunction, craniofacial abnormalities and behavioral maladjustment's. Fetal Alcohol Effect is a less severe set of the same symptoms.
The Adoption Encyclopedia “ Estimates of the percentage of pregnant women using cocaine have ranged from 10% to as high as 28% in some areas.” Cocaine is one of the oldest drugs known to man. This is a powerfully addictive stimulant, and is derived from coca leaves, and this drug has been abused for thousands of years. Crack Cocaine's worst damage to the fetus is its effect on the brain. It causes the brain's of both the mother and the fetus to experience the typical surge of dopamine. Since the fetal brain is still in the process of development, it can result in serious psychological addiction, attention deficit disorders, lack of cognitive abilities and developmental problems. Also crack's effects on the fetus result in seizures. Babies that are exposed to crack are at increased risk of birth defects, which include heart deformities. Crack causes an unborn baby to have a stroke or a heart attack. Cocaine abuse by mothers during pregnancy is linked with abnormalities in the development of the heart both before and after birth. Crack Cocaine
The results of drinking alcohol with a baby in the womb can be very serious. There are a range of effects that can occur to the child exposed. The most serious result of drinking during pregnancy is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). Some of the effects of FAS are hyperactivity, short attention span, learning problems, behavioral issues, delayed development, and abnormal facial features. The abundance of problems the child will have all depends on the amount of alcohol consumed by the mother during pregnancy.
Among factors to consider, alcohol consumption is frequently associated with drug abuse, smoking, and malnutrition. All of these factors can cause serious harm to the developing embryo of a child. It is difficult for researchers to decide which effects are caused by alcohol alone.
The birth mother had reduced her daily suboxone intake by 80% however, she was smoking marijuana every couple of hours throughout her pregnancy, and the relationship between the birth parents had improved to the point that they married. Research regarding the use of marijuana during pregnancy is not conclusive. However, there is some evidence that marijuana can have and effect cognitively and on memory. Yve was also in the NICU for almost a month, though she was born seven weeks early and had to still learn how suck, swallow and breathe before she could be
FAS or fetal alcohol syndrome is a severe form of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), and the effects of this condition are usually permanent. There are a wide range of symptoms and these are just a few: a small head, smooth ridge between the upper lip and nose, small and wide-set eyes, very thin upper lip, or other abnormal facial features and below average height and weight. (The Healthline Editorial Team). 2015. Another factor that may affect the fetus and the baby in future development is stress. When you’re stressed, your body goes into "fight or flight" mode, sending out a burst of cortisol and other stress hormones. These are the same hormones that surge when you are in danger. They prepare you to run by sending a blast of fuel to your muscles and making your heart pump faster. (Watson, S). 2013. Some studies show that chronic stress may lead to low birth weight, and this is when you alter your bodies stress management system. And based on what I have read I do feel that lower stress levels outweigh the minor risks of controlled alcohol consumption. This is due to the fact that there have been no studies that directley link moderate alcohol consumption to birth defects. FAS has been linked to mothers who abused alcohol during
Teratogens can harm an embryo. Most will not kill an embryo. However, any large quantity of teratogens like nicotine will
Alcohol can affect many people at different ages. Babies can be affected even if they aren't even born yet. Alcohol in the mother's blood transfer into the baby's blood. It affects and damages the growth of the baby's spinal cord and brain. The child may be born with many facial features, such as the child may have a flat head and face, and narrow eye openings. The baby may be born with birth defects. The baby may be smaller than other kids at that age. Babies may have learning disabilities and behavior problems. Newborn babies may have bonding or feeding issues.
The worst outcome of fetal alcohol exposure is FAS which is a lifelong condition that damage to the central nervous system, poor growth pertaining to development in the womb, growth after birth, or a combination of both and causes abnormal facial features.
Alcohol is a type of teratogen, which is an agent that can caused birth defects to occur. The timing and the amount of exposure to a teratogen is crucial when it comes to a pregnancy. A mother’s use of alcohol can greatly affect an unborn child. The timing at which the effect of teratogens varies from person to person, but the time when the teratogens have the largest effect typically occurs during the periods of rapid prenatal development. Mothers who are pregnant, or who wish to become pregnant, should avoid consuming alcohol because the teratogens can affect the mother’s eggs. It is true that there are certain stages in the pregnancy where a certain amount of exposure to teratogens will only have little impact, but there is still some form of result. When
According to dictionary.com a teratogen is “a drug or other substance capable of interfering with the development of a fetus, causing birth defects”. Teratogens are also substances that are found in the environment which are known to cause defects in fetal development. Teratogens are one of the leading causes of death to newborns in the nation. “There are four major factors that depend on the extent of fetal defects and those are the dosage, genetic makeup of the mother and the developing fetus, fetal age, an other negative influences on pregnancy” (Berk, 2012). Some of the common teratogens include alcohol consumption, exposure to radiation, environmental pollution, tobacco and or drug use, and certain prescription and non-
