Taken It was snowing the day it happened. Icy flakes drifted down from the sky in a flurry of madness, and the air was freezing. This is how it always was, and how it always would be, ever since the spirits had terrorized the streets of the village. Everyone’s windows were boarded, and no one dared step outside for fear of being taken. Elizabeth wondered about that. What is being “taken” and why are all of the adults talking about it in hushed voices? Elizabeth was a smart girl, well aware of the dangers that lived just outside of the door, but she was still very curious. She moved the wooden panel covering the window and peeked outside. She didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. “Lizzy!” her father called, pulling her out of her thoughts. “Put the plank back. You know how dangerous it is out there.” …show more content…

She had so many questions, but no one would give her any answers. Adults could be so frustrating sometimes. But Elizabeth had a plan. That night, the little girl made sure she was absolutely silent and tiptoed to the front door. Curiosity came over her, and she pushed all of her worries out of her mind and just went for it. The cold air seeped through her clothes, and she started to shiver. She wandered the streets of her village but didn’t see anything. She was about to give up, when she felt something near her ear and turned around to see what it was. That’s when she saw it: a face right in front of hers.
