In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the creature explains that at the birth, he was innocent, benevolent, trusting and that he was made evil and murderous through experience. What questions does Frankenstein raise about the nature of the creature? Does the creature have morality? When he starts facing the real world he faces pain and fear first which starts the change in him. As creature states, “In my joy I thrust my hand into the live embers, but quickly drew it out again with a cry of pain” (84). Here, the creature gets a physical feeling while being burnt and experiences his first experience with pain when the fire he thinks a source of delight and warmness turns against him and harms him. Also, another example of him facing the real world is when he starts feeling fear. The fear of the creature never grows less. He is always cautious while he tries to adapt to nature. Whenever he tries to attach to the human society he gets a denial. So, he starts to create a distance between them. This teaches him how hard the life is. After he gets a rejection from the humanity he starts to feel the change in him. As monster speaks, “I shall relate events that impressed me with feelings which from what I was, have made me what I am” (95). In the text, the creature claims that the feelings he develops and feels changs him into his different nature. Here, his different nature can be taken as monstrous, as when Viktor creates him he was innocent and benevolent like a newborn baby. As his feelings grow, he wishes to learn the method of communication, language. He wants to communicate to express his feelings that were growing. After he learns the language he plans to be friend with the old man. While the creature approaches the old man, he frightens and does not accept him. Due to the regular rejections that he faces in his life, he starts to fall apart. As he encounters with the world of which he is not a part of, he develops intentions of revenge to Viktor. So, the monster in him develops as his feelings changes and the intention of revenge
