All that being said, some people will argue that parent’s attention has little or no influence on a child. Yes, this is true to some extent because there are other factors that contributes to the inhuman behavior of some children. Some parent tried all they could by providing the best training they could give, but still some children are still violent regardless. Some parents live in violent area not because they want to deliberately expose their children to violence, but because they cannot afford a better and more secure area. Poverty has contributed negatively to the upbringing of some these children. A study (Hannon & DeFina, 2005) shows that violent crime and criminal behavior are because of poverty. After considering the opinion that …show more content…
One the reasons while the United States still remain one of the most powerful countries in the world is because of the country’s security. Despite the degree of enemies and threat from the country’s foes, the country is still impenetrable. The situation would have been worst if the citizens are not armed. The citizen and the country as whole would be vulnerable if the citizens cannot defend themselves. The United States is too advanced, too involved in a war related matters, and too big to leave its protection in the hands of armed forces only. According to an article (R, …show more content…
For example, women who behave passively when confronted by a criminal are 2.5 times as likely to end up being seriously injured as women who have a gun. And men who behave passively are 1.4 times as likely to be seriously injured as men who have a gun. Not only do the states with the highest gun ownership rates have much lower crime rates, but, more importantly, those states that have had the largest increases in gun ownership over time have had the biggest relative drops in violent crime. A similar relationship exists across countries. Usually only six or so countries are compared, but, as Jeff Miron at Boston University and others have shown, when data is used for all countries from which it is available, the countries with the strictest gun-control laws tend to have the highest homicide
They assume that People without guns are murdered daily by criminals who have guns. So, having a gun makes you better able to defend your family. Also, 75-80% of police officers who get called to a crime scene arrive 10-15 min after the crime was committed. Consequently, criminals have enough time to escape. So, it is necessary for all citizens to be able to defend themselves against criminals.
Humans are complicated creatures. I proclaim that we are innately curious about everything. What, why, how, when are questions that constantly circulate in our minds. These questions then encourage us, naturally, to search for the answers. This is true in the area of crime and criminal behavior as well. Criminological theory attempts to describe why and how crime transpires by studying the countless social factors that influence someone to commit crimes. These theories are then supposed to explain both the understandings and roots of crime. Abstract outlooks offer an image of what something is and the best way of addressing that particular subject. In this section of the course we have explored different author’s sociological perspectives in the realm of theory. Each aim to explain why people engage in crime, but I will focus my attention on anomie/strain theories. First, I will provide a short summary of Merton’s anomie theory, Messner and Rosenfeld’s institutional-anomie theory and Agnew’s general strain theory. Next, I will take some time to highlight the strength or usefulness of the theories, with some critique, but mostly focusing on the positive value. Lastly, I will use the biological example of William Freeman and explain how the strain theory is directly relational.
A study was conducted at Harvard University by American lawyer Don B. Kates, and criminologist Gary Mauser, a professor at Simon Fraser University. Together they wrote a journal entitled “Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide?” which includes statistics and evidence regarding the correlation between high rates of gun violence and high gun ownership. According to their research, it says “Denmark has roughly half the gun ownership rate of Norway, but a 50% higher murder rate (Kates and Mauser 670).” More evidence was concluded by this journal; it states that Russia has one ninth the gun ownership of Norway, and the murder rate is 2500% higher (Kates and Mauser, 671). These statistics show the negative effects of low rates of gun ownership in foreign countries. In the United States, cities such as Chicago have seen a dramatic increase in gun violence. In 2016 alone, Chicago has experienced a 91% increase in homicides committed with a firearm (Awr Hawkins and Chicago Tribune). According to the NRA, concealed carry laws in Chicago are very strict, and the idea that gun laws are very loose is false (NRA-ILA). On the contrary, in Texas, a citizen can legally concealed carry and have no waiting period if they choose to purchase a gun (Texas Gun Laws), and it considered is one of the safest states in the United States (Tucker Carlson).
Strain causes people to act against the law, breaking laws to attain their means. Merton’s theory on strain and anomie provides us with reasons for why the offender committed the crime break and enter. Merton’s strain theory shows us that the offender understood the norms of society but could not attain the means of it, he needed money go back to his girlfriend who was out west. Merton’s theory states that an individual who is lacking in social forms is more likely to commit crime due to stress. The offender grew up with many different types of strain, destine for failure in life when he dropped out of high school. Without a high school education he had a hard time finding a job and had a strain on
In a research conducted by Kates and Mauser (2007), the widespread of gun ownership actually correlates to a decrease in fire arm-related crimes with data obtained from Denmark, Norway and Russia. However, due to socio-economics and cultural factors, America is shown to have an eight percent higher homicide rate than Norway regardless of having 300% more gun ownership rates (Lott and Mustard, as cited by Kates and Mauser, 2007). Both
For example, when the study shows numbers for Eastern European gun ownership and corresponding murder rates, it is apparent that less guns to do not mean less death. In Russia, where the rate of gun ownership is 4,000 per 100,000 residents, the murder rate was 20.52 per 100,000 in 2002. That same year in Finland, where the rate of gun ownership is very high: 39,000 per 100,000; the murder rate was almost nothing, statistically very low significance at 1.98 per 100,000. Looking at Western Europe, the study shows that Norway has Western Europe's highest household gun ownership rate (32%), but also its lowest murder rate. And when the study focuses on intentional deaths by looking at the U.S. vs. Continental Europe, the findings are no less revealing. The U.S., which is so often labeled as the most violent nation in the world by gun control proponents, comes in 7th for murder rates behind: Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, and the Ukraine. America also only ranks 22nd in suicides. The murder rate in Russia, where handguns are banned, is 30.6; the rate in the U.S. is 7.8. The authors of the Harvard study conclude that the burden of proof rests on those who claim more guns equal more death and violent crime. Nations that impose stringent gun controls have achieved substantial reductions in criminal violence or suicide. But after intense study the authors conclude those correlations are not observed when a large number of nations are compared around the
In this paper, I will discuss the three crime codes, two from my state which is Mississippi and one federal code. My two state code crimes are code § 97-3-59. Mayhem and § 97-3-7 (b) Aggravated Assault; also my federal crime code is 18 U.S.C. § 201 : US Code - Section 201: Bribery of public officials and witnesses. (Find Law) Secondly, I will explain whether the crimes are felony or misdemeanor crimes and why. Third, I will explain whether the crimes are state or federal crimes and why. Lastly, I will explain how the crimes are different from civil violation of the law and be specific.
Psychology and criminality relates to the study of how aggression develops through a variety of possibilities which include; conscience, emotions, childhood, and socialization. Through the path of criminals their direction in violence we are able to determine the connection of psychology and criminality. Through the social learning theory, it can help us develop a better understanding why people engage in violent activity or have aggression, we can identify the state at which a criminal is and how both psychology and criminality connect.

Our brains are full of surprises, therefore anyone could have the capacity to be a murderer. Low empathy, self-control, and ethics are all signs of a psychotic brain. Our ancestry can clue us into a trend in our behaviors, such as having a history of murderers in your family tree. Although crimes are not always the first sign, there are many small behavioral traits that may prove a criminal mind. Childhood and adolescence can make or break a murderer, abuse and neglect makes for high chances of criminal intent. Most criminals feel as though they are doing good in their mind, a vigilante of sorts. Stress is a pivotal part of human’s behaviors, and can bring out the best or worse in a person. Some motivations of killers are obtaining money, thrill-seeking,
Crime always has been and always will be a big issue in the world unless communities take action to stop it. Criminal behavior has many different outcomes. There are lots of people in the world and lots of reasons why people are tempted to carry out criminal behavior. Criminals may not be able to understand why criminal behavior is bad and that is why people need to come together and help them. Criminal behavior is a big reason families are torn apart and lives are ruined. There are steps that can be taken to decrease the crime rate. Knowing what the causes of criminal behavior are can help people to stop committing crimes, prevent it from happening, and understand the mental side of why crimes are committed.
According to the Uniform Crime Reports gathered by the FBI and the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the rate of criminal behavior and deviance can be directly linked to the environment in which people are raised. Along with this, research also shows that there is a strong correlation between parental absence/parenting techniques and the rate of delinquency. Between 2008 and 2012, the rate of nonfatal violent victimization in poor regions was double that of upper class regions. In order to understand how the environment relates to deviance and crime, an examination of its effects on people’s socialization must be conducted. In this, I will also discuss the impact of parental absence, and how different styles of parenting effects delinquency. As stated before, the environment plays an enormous role in the development of delinquency and crime. The reason for this lies in the socialization, interactions, and economic status of people.
I am applying for the criminology/forensics program because this year I am taking an AP Psychology course, I excel in this class and the study of behavior interests me. When I was getting into books and reading, mystery and suspense had always interested me so I have always wanted to be a part of the FBI. I can help the agents catch the bad guy and figure out why the criminals do what they do. Not many schools offer programs like the criminology program at Penn State, that is what caught me and reeled me in to apply to this school.
Examining and understanding the theories of crime and delinquency allow a formidable argument to be formulated regarding the ineffectiveness of corporal punishment dependent on the influencing factor. The strain theory states, “When individuals are faced with a gap between their goals, which are usually centered around money, strain occurs.” (Gutierrez, 2008). Society has a dominant set of values and goals along with acceptable means of achieving them. When juveniles do not meet the society defined definition of success, the probability of deviance increases. Juveniles do not have the ability to have a steady flow of income while underage. They are dependent on their parent or guardian to fulfill their requests. In order to be accepted by
