As an undergraduate student at the University of New Mexico I have become increasingly aware of the complex network problems that I face as a citizen of the world. Last year I was belligerent on what my purpose was, and what major to study. I continued to take classes to try and determine what to study but still was not definite on what I wanted to do. There was a career counselor that I met with to assist me in knowing my strengths weaknesses as well as my interest. I then took a career test where it was revealed that my strengths was helping others and a being amongst others. I always knew that I loved assisting others and eventually in my life I wanted to somehow work with individuals who suffer from substance abuse. I desire to obtain both a bachelor in criminal justice and social work. In my heart I know that I can help people with both majors, by assisting people through law enforcement as well
Studying Laws combined will give me the skills applicable to a variety of traditional and nontraditional law careers to help others. Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, I was privileged to attended some of the best public schools in the nation. I am blessed to have been born into a family that provided me with the resources necessary to become successful. Although no journey ever goes as planned, my experiences have led me to believe that I am destined for great things. I hope that my journey towards success will continue by being accepted into the Masters of Arts in Criminal Justice program at Mount Mercy University for the Fall of 2018. My decision to study Criminal Justice can be traced back to the day I discovered the importance of the events that have shaped me into the young woman that I am today.
I am interested in participating in this fellowship program because having an understanding public policy is key to initiate social reform. In my undergraduate career, I double-majored in Legal Studies and Sociology. I focused on social inequalities present in society and studied topics ranging from immigration to the criminal justice system and the workings of the Supreme Court. Through my volunteer and internship experiences, I found a passion for advocacy in Latino communities and immigrant rights. I realized that many of the issues Latino and immigrant communities face in the United States stem from policies that dictate funding and enact restrictions on health care, education, travel, social services, and employment.
My passion in studying courses that relate to diagnostics and the human wellbeing, stems from my initial exposure to healthcare during Secondary School. I became interested in the criminal justice system after taking a law course in high school. As a female within the context of my religious and cultural background; having career in the criminal justice system is considered a non-traditional role for women and is frowned upon. During my research field placement at the Winnipeg Police Service and my work as research assistant for Dr. Weinrath and Dr. Karen Harlos I developed an interest in conducting my own research. My honours thesis on white-collar crime generated a curiosity in investigating crime perceptions and provided the background for my proposed project topic.
Since the age of 15, I’ve always been fascinated in studying Criminal Justice with the purpose of getting a deeper understanding of the causes and consequences people have to live with for committing a crime and look more to the effect that crimes have on society. In June 2013, I was giving the opportunity to be a intern at the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office. Majority of the time I spent was in the patrol car working hand on with detectives, where we responded to mostly burglaries and car accidents. I enjoy working with every detective on the force that summer. I found out that being a detective is hard work but is a very passionate job to have and made me want to pursue a career as detective.
At the age of ten a close family friend suffered a mental breakdown, and as I watched this happen I started to ask questions such as how can a loving father of three turn into a completely different person can? Why now? What were his new thought processors? Has the tendency to develop these symptoms always been there or has life circumstances triggered the episode? These and so many more questions required researching and the way I did this was to study Psychology.
