Decent Essays

The short story “Araby”,by James Joyce is told using first person point of view by the protagonist, a young boy whose name is never metioned through out the story. The narrator is a lonely boy who lives in a death end stress, and in a house that the former tenant, a priest had died. He lives with his uncle and aunty. Literally, the narrator is trapped because every description of the neighborhood seems to be isolation and the neighborhood can also be seen as a symbol of hopelessness. The narrator is in love with his friend’s sister, but it is not love rather obsession. He confuses Love with obsession. All his feelings, actions, thoughts and ideas shows he is merely obsessed not in love. The darkness and Love in the story leads the narrator to his epiphany; he realizes he is not in love with her and she is also not in love him too. Everything he feels for her is infatuation.
The love aspect, the narrator thinks he is in love with mangan’s sister, but no he is obsessed with her. His friend ‘s sister is several years older than him and hardly knows he exist. The narrator believes he is in love with her by the way he describes her, but he does not understand what Love is all about ,generally this show how inexperience he is about love matters. There is more to love than physical appearance and beauty. The narrator is naïve, immature, helpless and inability to act, because he has never spoken to her. One evening when she finally talk to him, the narrator is so nervous. “she ask me was I going to Araby. I forget whether I answered yes or no. It would be a splendid bazaar, she said; she would love to go.”(281). Until mangan’s sister suggested it, the narrator has no intention of going to the Araby. He promise to get her a gift at Araby, which he hopes will result in her attention and affection. “If I go,” I said “I will bring you something”.(281). Therefore, by getting her the gift, he thinks he can buy her love, but it is impossible to buy love with material things. The Love represent the narrator fantasty.
First darkness, the word darkness in the story was used repetitively. In this case, most of the significant part of the story happen at night, Joyce describes the boring and lonely life of the narrator.
