Critical Thinking Definition

Critical thinking is one of the most important traits that a person can have in their day to day lives. It involves the person to have the ability to ascertain claims and make judgments based on well-support evidence or logic rather than anecdote or emotion. There are 8 protocols that critical thinkers’ exhibit in their day to day lives in order to become better at their craft.

The outcome that I think will be the most challenging for me will probably be demonstrating critical thinking skills in response to readings/texts. That will probably be challenging because defining what appeals to the ethos, pathos, logos can get a tad bit confusing for me and sometimes I can mix things up. For example, if I think something is appealing to logic, in reality, it is appealing to emotions and values. Interpreting visual arguments can also be difficult due to the fact that interpreting is dependent on one's background knowledge and experiences. So the way I interpret something could be different to what someone else interprets.

Critical thinking’s meaning to me is a very well-disciplined thinking process of an individual who skillfully, analyzing and evaluating. A process from information gathered from information given to an individual. It also is coming from communication, observations and past experiences that the individual has experienced from the past. Critical thinking allows you to think and ask yourself the right questions so that you can reach the best conclusion.

According to The Critical Thinking Community website, critical thinking is defined as the ability to consider and to analyze information in an unbiased manner in order to make decisions and judgments (2013). Critical thinking is important. Blooms Taxonomy breaks critical thinking as Evaluation Synthesis Analysis Application, Comprehension and Knowledge. The components of critical thinking are: the application of logic and accepted intellectual standards to reasoning; the ability to access and evaluate evidence; the application of knowledge in clinical reasoning; and a disposition for inquiry that includes openness, self-assessment, curiosity, skepticism, and dialogue.

Do you ever think to yourself, “This can’t be worth it. Is what I’m doing right? Can this affect others in a negative way, and hurt people I don’t want to hurt?” When you do this, You’re thinking, and not just the kind of thinking you normally. What you’re really doing is critically thinking. You’re thinking about your decision and how it might hurt others, and what it will do for you in the future. When you critically think, it can help you make decisions from where to eat, up to huge and important decision that could last you a lifetime.

The quote from Dr. Parker I have chosen to write my essay on is one that I hold very close to my heart, “Do you realize that as a Christian you have some talent to use for the Lord?” For a long time I had the same thoughts regarding that sentiment as many people do. I had been jaded and saw that as nothing more than an overused, deceptive, superficial phrase friends or family members would use to pacify those of us struggling to find our place in the world. Even though I had achieved many things I always saw myself as less than average. I had an academic scholarship but I wasn’t valedictorian. I wasn’t obese but I didn’t look like the models plastered all over magazines. I obtained my Bachelor’s of science in nursing but I wasn’t the super hero always able to save the day like depicted on television.

"Don't judge a book by its cover". Many of us must have heard this saying, but only a few understand its true meaning. In fact, Judgment is not simply a random process but it is a more complex procedure revolving mainly around critical thinking. Critical thinking is all about asking questions that help to assess meaning or the significance of claims and arguments. Building these skills and applying them in a life makes it easy to assess evidence, evaluate arguments and stimulate intelligent thinking. Consequently, the person will stay activated and engaged in different situations. Critical thinking involves stepping back from the situation to take a view of all the angles before making any judgment or taking decisions.

Critical thinking can be defined as analyzing and evaluating information with a view to improve it, and making more effective decisions. Critical thinking is asking questions on the information and analyzing the answers to find the logic and applying it to real life situations. Critical Thinking means to establish a reasonable judgment in our everyday life, through improving our mind deeply by analyzing and doing actions that will benefit us. Out of the nine strategies that was given, I would like to adapt the first strategy, which is called, “Use Wasted Time”. One of my biggest struggle is wasting my time, even when I have important things to do. When the end of deadline is near, I tend to do everything all at once, in a limited amount of time. As a consequence, I become overwhelmed and start receiving migraines. Since I am bombarded with multiple tasks, it also affects my ability to accurately do my work.
