To work effectively in a foreign community, it is crucial that short-term nurses have an understanding of culture, belief system, and their lifestyles. Nurses needs to be culturally competence in order to provide patient centered effective healthcare. Culture competence is the ability of healthcare professionals to understand the social, cultural and linguistic needs of patients in order to provide effective health care (Georgetown University Health Policy Institute, 2004).   A lack of culture competence can lead to poor patient outcome. For example, if a nurse has a poor understanding of a diabetic patient's diet, and food preference, that could inhibit the nurse's ability to educate patient to manage the disease.

Cultural competence is a group of similar manners, attitudes, and strategies that collaborate in a system, organization or among experts and facilitate that system, organization or those professions to perform efficiently in cross-cultural states. A culturally competent health and wellness program provides services that take action to past inequities, existed realities, varied values, behaviors, and beliefs. It adapts advances to gather the diverse requirements of multicultural populations. Cultural competency can be implemented into our health and wellness programs by training the staff and health care experts of the programs to understand a patient’s diverse values, behaviors, beliefs, and modify treatment to meet the patients' community,

Cultural competent? What is the big deal? “The term cultural competence is used to describe a set of skills, values and principles that acknowledge, respect and work towards optimal interactions between the individual and the various cultural and ethnic groups that an individual might come in contact with” (HumanServicesEDU, para. 1). Being able to understand and effectively understand other cultures than your own, can make a huge difference in the patient’s treatment and how well the case manager can do his or her job.

Unfortunately, the lack of culturally competent healthcare providers such as nurses, leads to negative patient outcomes and low quality healthcare. Culturally competent nurses are required to adequately treat our culturally diverse population. Nurses are frontline patient advocates and education and training in cultural competence is an intervention that will implement positive changes in healthcare delivery in the U.S.

Cultural competence is important while dealing with patients from different cultures. Being culturally competent enables nurses to effectively care for people regardless of their background which may be from anywhere around the world. Len Sperry defines cultural competence as “the capacity to draw effectively upon cultural knowledge, awareness, sensitivity and skillful actions in order to relate appropriately to, and work effectively with others from different cultural backgrounds” (Sperry, 2012, pg.3) ¬¬ Cultural competence and class standards are connected because cultural competence is needed in order to adequately follow the CLAS standards. CLAS stands for culturally and linguistically appropriate services. Therefore, I believe it is only culturally competent healthcare workers that can deliver culturally and linguistically appropriate services.

My understanding of the term ‘cultural competence’ is when an individual is able to acknowledge, respect, embrace and educate about different cultures. It is when one is respectful and open to a person of a different cultures beliefs and values. Cultural competency is about understanding and learning the expectations of a certain culture. I believe it is about working towards equality within the people and educating others about other cultures to work towards acceptance. Cultural competency is having the capability to communicate, understand and respect all cultures.
