These includes cultural ; a) knowledge, b) awareness, c) skills, d) encounter and e) desire. Cultural awareness refers to self-examination as well as in-depth exploration of an individual cultural as well as professional background. I am able to explore my own cultural healthcare values and beliefs. This is because understanding another person's does not guarantee that one will become cultural competent. What made these things go well? These things went well because I have adopted desirable behaviours that facilitate effective communication. For example, When interacting with patients, I actively listened and watched with great concentration. This helped me identify cues that concerned the patients, and to acknowledge their challenges as well as establishing strategies to follow them up. In addition, I would reflect back o the issues, which helped me expand on the potential concerns and problems. I also sought clarification whenever I was confronted with contradicting information. My work placements acknowledge the importance of these skills and have programmed professional development training modules for every week. The next training module is on health and safety. This is important because nurses interact with patients for a longer time than the physicians. Basically, the training will incorporate aspects such as risk assessment, risk management and the process of reporting these assessments (Shannon, 2012). This will help me in learning strategies on risk mitigation. This requires good communication skills. The next training is on leadership skills. The module comprises of strategies to improve individual interpersonal skills. This will help improve the productivity and teams performances. The next training that I am looking forward to is on time- management skills. This is an important aspect for nurses in order to help them balance work and their social life. This will address on issues such as adequate sleep, taking of good diets and some exercises and other strategies to prevent burnout (Long, 2016). In addition. At the end of my work placement and graduating, I wish to further my education to Master level. I will also be looking into getting a job; therefore I will be amending my CV and personal statements. I have learned that it is important that educators and health providers be trained on cultural competency to understand the population they are serving. Marks, Sims, and Osher (King, Sims, & Osher, n.d.) define cultural competency as a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency, or among professionals and enables that system, agency, or those professionals to work effectively in cross–cultural situations" ( as cited in Cross et al., 1989; Isaacs & Benjamin, 1991). Health providers and educators should investigate demographic patterns or trends in the place where they live and work. This brings awareness of the types of cultures that they might come across when they are working with people. Organizations should integrate and implement policies that promote the value of diversity, self-assessment, manage the dynamics of difference, acquire and institutionalize cultural knowledge, and adapt to diversity and the cultural contexts of communities they serve (Georgetown University, 2004). Georgetown University (2004) also stresses that culture competency grows gradually and is always open for improvement.

Your rationale for both the organization and the individual nurse being responsible to ensure culturally competent care was similar to mine. For example, I mentioned the need for nursing curriculums at all levels of nursing education to provide competency training (American Academy of Colleges of Nursing website, 2011).
While examining the life of the Lee family, it was easy to identify that Hmong culture is much different than Western culture today. The Lee’s faced many adversities that not only affect their lives but the life of their ill daughter Lia. By analyzing culture, stigma, prevention, and implications, one can begin to see how the Hmong culture collides in the care of Lia.
For my cultural competence paper, I attended a Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meeting. The meeting was held at the First United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg on Wednesday, February 15th at 7:30 p.m. and lasted about one hour. Prior to attending the meeting, I was incredibly nervous and I did not know what to expect. The purpose of the assignment was meant for us to step out of our comfort zone and explore something that we have never done before and I thought that attending the meeting would be a perfect fit. I have never attended a NA meeting prior to this assignment nor did I have a specific reason to.
In this great nation we live in today that has been vastly increasing diversity bring so many great opportunities. But with these great opportunities there are also challenges that are continually looked over constantly. One of the challenges is our health care system that fails to deliver culturally competent services. Cultural competency helps to enable providers to deliver services that are respectful to diverse patients. This helps with patients own health beliefs, practices and cultural and linguistic needs. Both articles were very informative and provided information about how agencies need to change in order to become culturally competent. The agency I intern with this year is the Toms River Regional School District, specifically High School East, in that respect, my agency is very different than those in the two articles reviewed. Some of the core issues are the same when it comes to needed to learn cultural competency in terms of race and sexual orientation specifically. I have seen a similar issue in my agency needing to address cultural competency. Sensitivity to culture in health care, benefits delivery of care to the individual patient and can be a contribution to the larger undertaking of building a more tolerant multicultural society. This can be achieved by simply asking patients about their culture and beliefs or researching cultures that are prominent in the community where one is practicing. Cultural competence is learned over time and is a process of inner reflection and awareness. Possessing the skills, knowledge, and awareness, are essential proficiencies that must be gained by health care professionals. Although barriers to providing culturally sensitive care exist, gaining a better understanding of cultural competence is essential to developing realistic education and training techniques, which will lead to quality care for patients (Young & Guo, 2016).
After completing the “cultural competence checklist: personal reflection designed by T.D. Goode” for the first time, I was not surprised by my results. The results were a reflection of my personal understanding how culture impacts holistic care and my continuous need to improve my care. I have strived to become non-judgmental. I work to not let my personal beliefs and values influence my nursing care on decisions. When I practice this philosophy it provides better patient outcomes and promotes an improved understanding of cultural differences. This also enhances a safe and caring environment. “It is important for health care providers to recognize that care must be individualized and considerate of the cultural. Racial, and ethnic identity of the patients and their families” (Broome, 2006, p. 486) .There is much diversity in the beliefs and practices of the Indian culture and we should grant these individuals complete freedom to practice their personal cultural variations and the religion they choose.
