1. We live in a nation once known as a “melting pot,” which attracted people in search of freedom and liberty. The liberties America had, gave people the courage and hope to immigrate here and have a fresh start in life. Today, America is home to 318 million people, but that doesn’t mean we all “melt” into identical versions of each other because prejudice has created a barrier between us. Having dealt with discrimination early on, I know that learning to respect cultural differences can help us overcome this barrier in society. If we gain knowledge of cultural differences, we change our perspective to one of greater respect.
2. There is no reason to look at an individual and define them as a cultural outsider. When the term “cultural outsider” is used, the image of disadvantaged minorities is depicted in our minds. We perceive

Individuals experience prejudice on a daily basis, but usually no actions are taken until too many people are affected. We must act now before it is too late, because “by 2042 nonwhites will be the majority of the U.S. population” (Saar). To cohesively live together, people must stop expecting others to assimilate to our own cultural norms. I have been raised in America for my entire life as an Asian American and learned you do not have to leave your culture behind to live here. On the contrary, others must learn to accept you for who you are. People also need to be held accountable for discriminating words that some find amusing. Racist jokes are intentionally made to make some feel powerful while putting others down, because ethnicity cannot be changed. Everyone needs to embrace their nationality because what I learned being from taunted for my ethnicity is that no one should be made to feel ashamed for their heritage. It is scarring that we live in world where people intrinsically make assumptions about others based on racial stereotypes. In the end prejudice wounds us; instead, people must learn to honor the differences among
Over the past 100 years, the United States has changed the way it views other cultures including more respect, equality, and freedom for all people. As much as America has grown, has America really changed that drastically? Across the nation and world, cultural differences still exist, misunderstandings continue, and fighting persists. Recent attacks within the United States that are similar to the conflicts between the Japanese and Americans in the early 1900’s include the 9/11 attack, the bombing at the Boston Marathon, and the mass shooting in Orlando.
As Americans, it is our duty and responsibility to learn how to work together and accept each other’s diversity. Despite, all of us coming from a different cultural heritage, as Americans we now form and share a new common culture. America has been described as a big melting pot because our country is a place where many different cultures have come together to blend as one whole. Our shared American culture is supposed to be described as one that is built on the ideals of freedom, human equality, tolerance, and the respect for each other’s differences; all of this is what is suppose to make our nation so significant, sadly this is not the case for our nation. Throughout our American history we have learned about racial discrimination events that have taken place against African-Americans like slavery, the Civil War, the lynching and race riots caused by the Ku Klux Klan, the Jim Crow Laws and many other events; the Black Lives Matter movement has exploited these events in addition to racism, stereotypes, and the hate our country still contains within its people and the modern American society.
The author tried comparing cultures and saying how one specific would have a different meaning than the other. The author could have done better supporting his main idea with better textual evidence that did not come off as stereotypical. For example he tried comparing Hispanics, Chinese, and the Americans. One example from the text that came off as a bit stereotypical was when he made a comment about the Hispanic woman. Rodriguez said “Hispanic woman are hired to be at the center of the American family- to babysit and diaper, to cook and clean and to ease the dying” (261). Not all Hispanic woman come to America to work that way therefore the author was being a bit stereotypical.
Based on my experience in Eastern Europe and in North America, I fully embrace both Serbian and the different cultures that are in Canada. In the summer, I try to go to as many Serbian events as possible and at these events, there is traditional music, food and dancing which I enjoy so much. Unfortunately, I have not gone to many events of different cultures but I do like to educate myself about different customs and traditions in order to build on my awareness and knowledge of different types of cultures. I am Christian Orthodox in which I celebrate Christmas on January 7th and I always enjoy going to the church services for this Christmas celebration. Also, I fast where I do not eat dairy or meat products for a few weeks before Easter and
Often, I consider whether there are other living creatures around that we have not yet found. A while prior I had a thought to investigate the universe all the more intently. In light of my interest, I recently went by an irregular planet called Earth. As I landed on Earth, everything was extraordinary; it was as though I was trapped in a snow globe all my life and did not know anything past. Consequently, I felt ecstasy as I walked through a narrow pavement exploring the nature around me. Our own particular planet varies in a wide range of viewpoints. In addition, there are frequent significant differences in other living creatures. I observed a common species and examined them well; they refer to themselves as humans, more specifically Americans.
For century’s man’s thoughts, ideals, perceptions, and actions have caused tumultuous inquiraries. We as a society have learned to accept discrimination, prejudice, and stereotyping. These malefactors have caused great malice. Consequently, these dehumanizing practices are not only present in America which is considered to be the “melting pot”, but globally. Everyone is eccentric in their own way. We all have the God given right, and the natural right to habitat, in peace and harmony, and to be free of afflictions from others. Our Forefathers did not have discrimination, prejudice, or even stereotyping in mind when it came to building up America. In fact these cancerous inklings imbrue the very fabric that America was made of. Discrimination,
I was six year old when I was uprooted from my village in Punjab, India. I was anxious to see the promised land, as my parents had referred to it. My father left for America before I was born so he could obtain a labor job to save up money for when my mother, brother, and I would arrive. I never expected my beliefs and perspectives to change upon arrival. Growing up in a very uniform culture I had a black and white view of the world. In our culture women were responsible for being caretakers. Their job was simply to raise the children, cook, and be domesticated. The men had the role of the breadwinner and they were the ones encouraged to get an education.
The rare but beloved by all but one, aspic gelatin that shows up during certain “Russian parties.”
I spent six years of my life in the United States where I met people with diversified cultural backgrounds. Of all the cultural differences I experienced, I felt that elderly in America and Japan are different, as in how they act in the society. For instance, elderly in America seemed to have more jubilant life compared to those in Japan.
Culture impacts an entire nation: depending on what culture deems as acceptable, has the impact on a particular gesture; an example of this is in Japan, showing your teeth is regarded as rude and aggressive. In universities, the diverseness of the students is great, however, with this diversity, the level of expectation of a particular thing differentiates. Regardless, numerous people/groups believe they are superior to others, in this case the males in the dentistry program feel like they are superior to women. The reason behind this could be physical differences, such as strength and agility. Although their strength may be greater at times the punishment is shaped by one person’s perspective which can result in a lesser punishment to what
Throughout the different cultures around the world, there are many traditions that have been in place for many years. These traditions have been passed down from generation to generation and are looked at as being normal in these cultures. To the United States, and other parts of the world, some of these traditions are looked at as being crazy, bizarre, and even strange. There are many different cultures and unique traditions associated with them, but these are 5 interesting traditions found around the world.
In turn, despite the systematic discrimination being reported in the news, the fact remains that more complicated and subliminal forms of discrimination play effect on the lives of individual Americans daily. Until the negative, unwritten norms of society that we discussed are changed, it will remain a constant reminder of the stalemate we Americans face against bigotry, racism, and its’ many forms of
America has a diverse culture created from the unique blending of many people groups, each with their own set of personal and religious beliefs and traditions. Culture is an ever changing thing – with the shifting ideals, morals, and social behaviors that make up the particular group of people. Culture is defined as “The set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution or organization .” (Merriam-Webster online dictionary, 2016) America’s culture has changed drastically from the time of our founding fathers. In researching America’s history, as well as my own personal experience, I have observed this shift in thinking and behavior. From the ideas of moral absolutes as worded in such
Throughout the world, cultures divide individuals from one another. Gender roles, greetings, attitudes, and celebrations can be similar or extremely diverse depending on which cultures are compared. Compared to the United States, India has a diverse way of life. In the United States depending on what location, age group and way of life you study, men and women are either seen as equal, or men as superiors. In India, because religion is such a large part of their way of life, men and women are seen as equal. (Quran 3:195) Their Lord responded to them, “I never fail to regard any worker among you for any work you do, be you male or female, you are equal to one another…” A woman can hold property just like a man is able to and they share similar rights. Even though an Orthodox Islamic woman is expected to dress in a burka or wear a hijab, it does not signify here as lower than a man.
One of the main problems of racism is that many people live in racist conditions, without even seeing it. It has always taken place anywhere we can think of. Today it’s in our school, workplace, community, or even in our own homes. People often tell jokes without even thinking they could possibly be hurting someone. While we know not to laugh at ones about Africans, it seems that one’s about other races like White and Asian people are okay. As a person we think it’s okay, but not to those who they are offending. We are all victims of this and we usually feel that these types of jokes do no harm. They can be harmless and maybe at times we even think they are hilarious, but they are also hurtful and offensive. Some of the biggest racist people are the people who don 't even know that they are being racist, and even have the guts to say that they aren 't. These people are racist because they cannot comprehend what is happening and do not realize
