Cultural Diversity
Every Culture and Country has norms in which they live there day to day life by. What the Nacirema,(Americans) expects out of society, and the structure is seen as peculiar to someone from another part of the world. Thesis statement -Throughout the world Cultural diversity is evident. Cultural Diversity is demonstrated through Marriage, Ceremonies, and the lives of Children.
Cultural Diversity is predominantly visible by Countries Marital Customs. The Customs of the Kyrgyzstan, Arapesh, and Mexico are cultural examples of how diverse each one are from another. In Kyrgyzstan it is common practice to kidnap your Brides. Men tend to kidnap on the weekends, and the kidnappers negotiates usually with the brothers or fathers of their soon to be bride(dowry) prior to abduction . The wedding scarf is forced onto the kidnapped bride, if she agrees to the scarf she wants marriage, it is somewhat of a custom to

The Amish, Mundugumor, and the Arapesh are very diverse when raising their children.Children of the Amish, have a Rumspringa, it's a weekend to do anything they want, usually as you are entering adulthood it's a way to experience life. If the children decide they want to live outside of the Amish society they are left on there own and neglected by their families. The Mundugumor children, live a live full of prohibitions, they are not picked up showed any comfort or compassion. The mother feeds her children when she is ready. Arapesh children grow in a loving, social environment. The children are discouraged from all acts of aggression to one another. The children at time are lent out to their relatives, this increases the number of people children
Through learning, families values, community relationships, and the willingness to achieve. Culture can be easily seen - the behavior of people – is the smallest part of culture. The greatest part, internal culture is inside people’s heads. It is our way of thinking and perceiving. Most importantly, it includes the values and beliefs unconsciously learned while growing up. The collision of two cultures as people come together causes us to become more aware of the differences and similarities between cultural values. By understanding the internal culture and significant values, we have a system to analyze and interpret behavior. People from around the globe bring their cultures here to American and institute them into society. Although, the United States is a culturally diverse society, there is a dominant culture and others give up their culture (depending upon where they may live) so they can fit into mainstream society. My family as other African American families changed their ways to fit into society hoping to become socially accepted because of not being members of the dominant culture. As with most societal trends, family values in all cultures are in constant motion; the list of American family values is always evolving. African
In my opinion, this article about the Nacirema people was very fascinating. These people have a very different culture than we do, which I find very intriguing. They believe that the human body is ugly, and describe it as weak and prone to disease. Due to many aspects of the nonmaterial culture in America, I was raised to believe that the human body is beautiful and can accomplish incredible things. Therefore, I find it hard to see the meaning of their rituals, however, I do respect our cultural differences. The Nacirema people also build shrines within their houses. These shrines contain chests full of previously used magical healing potions and charms. The Nacirema people perform personality ceremonies at the shrine daily in order to ensure
Culture is one of the most relevant elements that can define not only a society but also a country’s cumulative beliefs and system. Often noted as the origins of a country, culture is definitive in the sense that it harbors all the elements that can provide justification on the traditions and norms set by the society for its members. More often than not, the society members follow norms in order to create a harmonious community, and the beliefs and the traditions serve as the poles or grounding rules for each member to follow. Culture is very dynamic in the way that it can change over a variety of foreign influences but what is permanent about it is that original elements about it often lingers with the influences, therefore making it multi-faceted and broad. More importantly, culture serves as an individual and unique trait each society has, and therefore sets it apart from other countries and other societies.
1. The Nacirema culture gradually developed into a market economy that is extremely devoted to daily rituals. The tribe's perspective towards the human body shows unusual and strange behaviors that they possess. They believe that the human body is hideous and is prone to illness and weakness. The Nacirema tribe also have an irrational fear regarding the mouth, because they believe that their teeth would fall out or their gums would bleed which shows their behaviors are vaguely eccentric. From my perspective, the ritual activity that involves washing a child's mouth to enhance moral behavior is fascinating, because they believe that a strong bond exists between oral and moral traits. The ritual ablution they perform on children is supposed to improve the ability to do what is right, no matter the situation.
Different societies exist throughout the world and within these societies each society develops culture that works best for them. Within these cultures they pass all their acquired knowledge and traditions down from generation to generation. Nevertheless, each culture has their own way of life, own marriage beliefs, their own values and feelings on life and religious beliefs. Cultures tend to have their own way to run their government, and ways to keep their economy up to their standards. Most importantly in cultural anthropology it is imperative to value culture relativism. This is the view in which no culture is superior to other
By keeping reading this article, I do understand that Nacirema is a tribe with a deep and unique connection with their culture. For example, they have a created a special structure of society for their ritual and ceremony of the human body. Indeed, the Nacirema tribe has a deep believe in their religion, culture and their belief. We understand from this perspective that our diversity makes us certainly different, but connected. For example Horace mentions that Nacirema body cleansing is a must for social recognition, and mouth rituals make them (the Nacirema) more accepted by others. These rituals may look odd to some point of view. In this logic, one may argue that the author emphasizes the fact that diversity acknowledgement can be complex.
I believe culture is the attitudes and feelings a group of people share. Culture can include practices like rituals and customs like religion. It is how you eat, drink, and speak. Culture can be either tacit or explicit. Tacit is very much like an unspoken behavior, it is something people lack words for. Explicit culture can be spoken or written. No matter what category culture falls into it truly makes us different from one another. It is everywhere shaping people all around the world every day.
The Nacirema tribe is a North American group with a highly developed market economy that has evolved into a rich natural habitat. The underlying belief of the Nacirema is the human body is ugly and that it has a tendency to weakness and illness. The Nacirema believe that the condition of one’s mouth has influence on their social relationships and believe that if not in good condition, their lovers will leave them, their gums will bleed and their teeth will fall out, etc. So in order to maintain a healthy mouth, they perform a mouth-rite which is one of their daily body rituals, but this certain one involves moving a bundle of hog hair with magical powders sprinkled throughout around their mouths in order to cleanse and protect. Anthropologists are familiar of many cultures that spread across the world. They are usually not surprised when it comes to bizarre cultures such as the Nacirema. The Nacirema is a North American group, although it suggests that they came from the East little is known about their origins.
Modern America is a very individualistic culture that, that puts the priorities of the individual person before society as a whole. Amish, on the other hand, are very group oriented. They have their own congregation in which they sustain themselves. Their church helps with finical burdens, and provides assistance to those in need. The group’s need comes before the individual. There is also the conflict of education. America values education very highly, government regulated standards and mandatory participation. The amish do not value formal education as highly. They tend to rely on an elementary or middle school education, with the rest being learned through life experience (Amish, 2015). They learn by working hard in their jobs, and apprenticing the older generations. Family size and obligations also differ between the Amish and American values. Americans usually have relatively small families, with two or three children being the national average. Amish families usually have an upwards of eight children per household (Amish, 2015). This surplus of children provide a labor force for the farm or family business, and ensures that the number of Amish people continues to rise. The Amish population tends to double every twenty-three years (Amish, 2015). These core values help to separate them from the ugliness that lies in modern society, of which they strive to be
I like your post and agree with you. I also think that Nacirema’s culture is barbaric and could not believe these strange activities at the first time. I also wrote in my discussion about the holy-mouth-men. The way the author describe the dentist is very appropriate for me because I am very scared when I go to dentist since I was young. Also, I think the listeners are psychologist. Psychologists’ job is to help people solve their problem from internal and provide them therapy. I think this is a interesting article to learn. I am wondering if someone outside our culture read this article, how would that person react? Will he or she think we are the barbaric nation?
This article starts by stating that it is going to describe the magical beliefs and practices of the Nacirema people and it seemingly does just that (Miner). The normality of the American way of living is removed and just the facts are left to be described as a seemingly different culture. Upon rereading, there are many facts that show the reader that the author is talking about Americans, but they are easily skimmed over with the guise that this is some other culture. For Example, the author even states that the Nacirema live in North America between Canada and Mexico (Miner). He even goes on to tell the reader about their cultural hero Notgnihsaw, which is Washington spelled backwards, and mentions his feat of cutting down a cherry tree (Miner).
Culture is defined by a construction of one's world-view, and it is transmitted by individuals and collectives through socialization and enculturation (Pederson & Ivey, 13). It contains values, beliefs, language, and perception. In studying cultural differences among members of distinct national, ethnic groups researcher have examined the concept of collectivism and individualism. People form individualistic cultures tend to view themselves as unique entities and independent form one another (Coon & Kemmelmeier, 348)
When comparing cultures, one must form a definition of what culture is. Culture can be easily defined as the social behavior and normality’s found in human societies. It can also be easily made up of a composed arrangement of educated conduct and thought designs. Culture is a sorted out framework since it includes many parts. Throughout the world, there are many cultures that are both very different and also very similar. "Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at table, how we greet visitors, how we behave and one million other things." (Cristina De Rossi.)
To sum up the points, it can be perceived that in order to understand the concept of personal cultural diversity, the different aspects of one’s lifestyle must be examined and determined in order to point out individual differences in a particular group or society. This is because each individual has different genetic make-up,
