A traditional German breakfast would consist of jam, butter, bread, and muesli as this is a breakfast cereal. Coming from a German culture, my family stays traditional in the way we celebrate holidays and eat food. The differences between German and American culture are very evident in their holiday traditions and meals, but there are also some similarities, such as language, that are often overlooked.
Another huge part of my life that comes from my German heritage is the foods that my family and I eat. Germans eat a lot of meats. The main meat that my family and I have is pork and sometimes steak. Pork is a very common food in Germany. We even have sausage occasionally. My whole family sits at the dinner table while my father and grandpa cook our dinners. Another thing that the adults do is drink beer on special occasions. My cousins and I are under age so we obviously can’t have
The Iceberg Model of Culture describes a culture’s behaviors and practices, interpretations, and core values. This particular model is interesting to look at, because it shows, how a culture is perceived (the tip of the iceberg) and the actually culture (the 90% that is hidden). When looking at the German culture the most things that come to mind would be: beer, lederhosen and dirndls, Oktoberfest,

By 1890, Germany had been a nation state for almost 20 years. Liberal nationalism was dying from its own success, and a new brand of popular ideas on the German Volk and fatherland was emerging to represent the generation which had been born in the boundaries of a German state, and was now reaching adulthood. Necessarily, these ideas would adopt foundations of German cultural superiority and common identity which had been espoused at the start of the century, and this was encouraged by colonialism. This popular nationalism was encouraged by the more active climate of public debate and freer politics. They were also no doubt affected by the position of the army in German society and the interference of a government dominated by the
The festivities last for a whole month: from December 6th, the feast of St. Nichols, until January 6th, the feast of the wise men. Similar to the American Christmas traditions, Christmas trees are a large part of the holiday celebration. In Germany, unlike America, the Christmas tree is secretly brought into the house the night of Christmas Eve and is decorated by the mother. Trees are most famously decorated with hand blown glass ornaments and tinsel. Another German tradition unlike America’s is that presents are usually exchanged and opened on Christmas Eve instead of Christmas Day. Germans also celebrate Zweiter Weihnactsfeirtag the day after Christmas. Zweiter Weihnactsfeirtag directly translates to Boxing Day, the holiday also celebrated in Canada. Though unlike Canada, where Boxing Day is a time for shopping and finding discounts, in Germany, Boxing Day is like a second Christmas. Families spend time with their grandparents and godparents. Things like board games, watching TV, and other typical bonding activities are done. This day, for the Germans, is a quiet day to relax and prepare for the rest of the Christmas
The three cultural groups/architecture styles I chose to compare are the Belgians, Midwestern Germans, and New England Tradition styles. Each of these groups used similar building materials and styles when constructing their homes and other buildings, yet they are very distinct from one another. The Belgians used large logs to create a sturdy structure and then covered the logs with brick. They began to do this after a serious forest fire, adding the brick to act as a fire retardant and possibly to keep out the cold weather. Since the size of the logs were out of their control, so was the size of their houses.

The values and beliefs of the German Americans pose obstacles to cross cultural understandings, causing rejection by American society, because of Germany's political views. According to the International Encyclopedia, Germany was a part of a Monarchy during World War I. Time lies at the core of German culture, for them it is a one of the principal ways of organizing business, Like the Americans they are monochromic and follow the same basic patterns, but there is some critical differences with them. Germans are very high on the monochromic scale their decision making proses is often involved and deliberate than the Americans.

Texas is recognized for its rich German heritage and every year revelers gather to celebrate Oktoberfest in cities across the state. Oktoberfest was a compelling cultural event for my third field study endeavor. So what better place to celebrate one of the largest annual festivals than Fredericksburg, Texas, a city founded by German immigrants. It was an opportunity to gain valuable historical insight into the social ways of the German culture.

One obvious difference between Germany and China is the food habit. German tends to have cool food for breakfast, which comprises bread, cheese and cold meat like ham and salami, whereas the Chinese tend to have hot food at the beginning of the day, such as congee, which is a thick, white porridge made of rice and water.
