This article I read in the Science Times is called “Cycling 101 Needn’t Be a Collision Course.” Cycling, believe it or not, can be considered a very dangerous sport. When it comes to bike-related injuries, the United States has the greatest count. Overall, in recent studies, there has been a great percentage increase in the injuries resulting from cycling. The injuries from arms and legs have went down considerably. But, fatalities to the head and torso have increased. The lead author of the study of cycling states how roadways and streets could potentially be safer if there were more cyclists. He says this because he believes injuries will decrease if cyclists travelled in numbers. Other countries, excluding the US, are considerably safer
years decisions for Bikes Bikes Bikes, which have resulted in both negative and positive impacts.
These statistics do not only apply to motorcyclists, however. Riders of mopeds and bicycles also see a reduced fatality rate when helmet laws are enforced. According to Meehan, et al., rates of bicycle-related fatalities were lower in states with helmet laws. This was especially apparent among children under the age of 16 where the incidence was 2/1,000,000 in states with helmet laws versus 2.5/1,000,000 in states without the laws (727). While this
While Dave Horton is referring to more of the safety side to promote helmets by showing awareness of safety. The Fear of Cycling makes the readers be more aware of becoming motivated to get into shape
Cromwell was at the height of power, religious success and continued to have a tight hold on his master King Henry VIII. After the death of Henry’s third wife Jane Seymour, Cromwell advised a new political marriage for the king. To pursue his own advantage and build Protestant connections in Europe, Cromwell suggested the king take a German bride. This would also aid Cromwell against anti-Cromwell factions and nobilities, due to the potential bride being an outsider rather than English noblewomen. Cromwell finally found success in the Duke of Cleves sister Anne. Henry, eager to marry once again, sent his artist to paint her portrait, determined to have a beautiful wife. Henry received her portrait and approved of the young Anne of Cleves, she soon set sail for England, an enormous accomplishment for Cromwell’s domestic and foreign policy. Henry titled Cromwell earl of Essex on 18
People need a way to make it to appointments and school as well (Castillo, 2013). When it comes to safety; Hispanic pedestrians suffer a higher death rate than anyone else. This could be because most families live without a car and walk to get from location to location. If there are other means for families to transport they spend 42% of their total income doing so (TLC, 2016).
A calculation of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, NHTSA, states, “a motorist is almost 20 times more likely to die in a crash involving another motor vehicle” than a train (Operation Lifesaver, Inc.). In 2016, there were 2,025 vehicle to vehicle collisions resulting in 265 fatalities and 798 injuries (Operation Lifesaver, Inc.). By reporting on fatal crashes, the media unintentionally degrades the public's opinion of train safety. The trains are blamed for train versus vehicle crashes, however it is generally the vehicle at fault. Surprisingly enough, the fatality rate for trains is much higher than planes.
Bicycle accidents have increased dramatically in the United States. About 500 American children and teenagers die each year in bicycle accidents, and three-quarters of those deaths come from head injuries (Jacques 1). Recent federal safety reports suggest that helmets can reduce the risk of head injury, but that only 4% of children under the age of ten wear helmets when bicycling. The percentage drops even more for young riders, particularly the rebellious 11- to 14-year-old age group. The younger generation often cites peer pressure, or the "nerd" factor, as the main reason for not wearing a helmet, and many adults say, "I did not wear one as a child, and I'm all right." Although states have
In that same year, motorcyclists were 29 more times likely to die in a car crash per vehicle mile traveled than car
So many people are scared of getting hurt. Me personally I don’t care if I get hurt. This is why street racing is fun to me. Me personally I don’t care if I get hurt. This is why street racing is fun to me. It makes me feel like I am in control of what happens to me. My paper is about street racing and I will discuss what my topic is over, how street racers can race safely if they are scared, and where to go to race safely.
The authors clearly made this article in depth by including advanced level of word choice, statistics and charts. The authors start off the piece giving a general overview of the issues and goes into more detail in later paragraphs about their questions. Le Vine, et al. do not exactly state their opinion on the issues in the article but they make reference to their opinions in one of the first sentences. “… increased road network capacity and the freeing up of the driver – occupant’s time to engage in their choice of leisurely or economically – productive task” (pg. 1). They are taking a stance by inferring that people could be more productive during a commute if they did not have to worry about driving.
Back to 1977, for reasons unknown, the federal government repealed the helmet law and within three years half of the states followed suit and repealed their own helmet laws. Motorcycle injuries and fatalities rose sharply, seems the people forgot that 80% of motorcycle accidents resulted in injury or death. Statistics show that a motorcyclist is twenty-one times per driven mile more likely to be killed than persons driving cars.
In this section, I am going to discuss how social determinants of health, as exemplified by my observations, affect people in the area serviced by the NHS Trust I am training with. As I have mentioned in my introduction the road construction was to expand roads and build more cycling lanes. The negative aspect of this was noise pollution, more dusts and traffic level reduced. It can be very disturbing for people living near the road as road construction may begin early in the morning and finish late in the evening. The dusts from the road construction can cause asthma to individuals. The positive aspect of this could be to encourage people to cycle more because cycling is known to be a form of exercise. In terms of health, this reduces the
Firstly, there are too many life-threatening accidents occurring on the road. Vehicles have the upper hand to cyclists, putting their life in danger. Already this year, 37 cyclists in New South Wales have died due to being struck by cars, trucks, etc. and this number is expected to rise throughout the year. With all of these injuries developing, the public health system is affected, with tax becoming higher and more resources needing to be used in hospitals.
As I read the statistics of the causes of crashes and death, I see somethings that are just plain stupid and ridiculous. It is surprising that some of these are even real statistics. Like running off the road is the leading cause of death for teenagers. I find this hard to believe and quite frankly, stupid. I’ve been driving for quite a while now and it’s insane that teenagers can’t stay in their lane because it is not that hard. I think knowing these stats is somewhat pointless because I should be more concerned about my surroundings when I’m behind the steering wheel. Although, I will admit, the statistics are good to know because I can now be sure to pay more attention and avoid being in a similar situations to 30% of killed teens.
Ask three people at your workplace what, in their opinion, are the three biggest issues in workplace ethics and why they hold that opinion. Report their rank in the organization and your findings. According to Ruddell, ethics are the universal and unchanging standards of what we should do; what is good. (Ruddell, 2014
