26.11.15 Today when I arrived at the nursery Karen had a talk with me asking how I am settling in and finding things, I have been getting along really well with my colleagues. They have really helped me settle in well and have made me feel very comfortable. Karen asked me if I would like to take the children for welcome time today, I was nervous but felt ready as I had observed her doing it lots of times. When all the children came in asked them to put the box of toys away that they were playing with. Jamie was the special helper today so I asked him to collect the board from the door. I went down the names helping him by sounding out the first letter in each name. He put a tick or a cross beside each person’s name depending on if they were here or not. Once he had done so I asked him to count the number of boys and …show more content…
The calming tidy up music came on today and it took a while for the children to settle as everyone was very energetic and excited. Once everyone was calm though they did a superb job at tidying away. Today when I was helping a boy put his shoes on he was misbehaving and threw his shoes at me and hit me with them. I wasn’t entirely sure what to do in this situation as when I told him off he did not take me seriously and continued to carry on and hit me. Margaret came over, took his hand and took him to the side to have a serious word with him. He was told that because of it he was staying in the nursery with her and not getting to go outside and that she would be telling his mum about the behaviour. The other children went to outside play as normal with everyone doing a variety of fun things. I just floated around joining in with them, I had a great time because their excitement and laughter is very infectious. It was time to go back into the nursery and wait for the children to be picked up. Margaret then spoke to me about the boy explained to me later that there are certain things you can do to get them to listen to you and take you more
Benjamin and Amy are working whole day, Amy will finish work at 6pm, Benjamin will finish around 4.30pm. Normally Benjamin will cook 3 Chinese dishes for dinner. After dinner, everyone will do their own thing at theirs room or they talk to each other about how was going today. Later night, Benjamin will do picked lunch for next day. Sometime, Amy will cook breakfast in the morning or children will have own breakfast.
Today, Julian came home very upset saying he did not want to go back to school. I asked him what happened and he said he was clipped down to “think about it” for talking back. I’m sure you get enough e-mails and letters from parents with regards to their child’s discipline, but when Julian has been clipped down in the past he has owned up to it. He feels as if today’s incident was a misunderstanding. I was told that he was talking to himself after you told him to do something, and you thought he was addressing you afterword. We see this in the house, where he does think out-loud before he makes some decisions, which we encourage so he can weigh his options.
While we talked, I asked Shanah how many children are in her group and she said thirteen children, which included her own son that is one and a half years old. As we talked, the children started arriving and she got them to sit down at the table and told them that they were going to make art craft for their mother for mother’s day. While Shanah was cutting the cloth, another caregiver came into the room and I asked her what the ages the children in this group was and she replied that the children in this group were between 1 ½ and 6 years old. After this caregiver left, I noticed one of the older children asked who I was and she responded that I was watching their class to learn.
I diplomatically asked Mel and Richard about their capacity to look after 3 other children as well as Liam-Jay. Melanie responded by saying that it hadn’t been a problem and that Liam-Jay really likes the children that have moved into to placement. I asked Melanie whether she was worried that she may be stretched to fine trying to meet so many children’s needs at the same time but Melanie did not express any concern about this (although she appeared to be tired). I informed Melanie that I would be making a referral to caring to care for Liam-Jay as I believe that he is need of therapeutic support from professionals to explore the relationship with his
This week a problem did arise at one of my centers, so I took the opportunity to do active listening. Recently at the center we had one of our special needs assistants quit and we are in the process of hiring another, but in the meantime the teachers are picking up the responsibilities in the room with a child that has Down syndrome. The parent came in one morning and said I need to talk to you privately, so I had had no time to prepare nor did I know what she wanted to talk about. I immediately took her into a private room, so I could give her my full attention and none would interrupt us. I then asked “what would you like to talk about”. She said that when her child came home she noticed that she had a soiled diaper and that her lip was busted. I
This week was my first week volunteering in Mrs. Bettenberg’s kindergarten class. When I volunteer, I usually am around the time they are doing their reading stations. When I come in I sit with them as a big group and listen to their daily announcements. Once the video ends, my job is to take one kindergartener at a time in the hallway, to do reading skills. One day they work on rhyming and the next they work on pronouncing the sound of the letters in the alphabet. Every day is a different reading activity. My job is fun because they love learning words and letters and every child is at different levels so its interesting to see their development and the way they like to learn. Since I have only been in the classroom volunteering for a week,
Going outside and playing is a regular thing at Open Door. All the kids get along and find fun games to play or try and make up anything that might seem entertaining to them. While we were outside playing I walked up to on of the kids who I knew fairly well at this point and put my hand out to give him a fist bump but right when I put my hand out he turned away and tried to ignore me. I was taken back with surprise because I literally walked up to him to say him and get the show on the road. I realized something was wrong because he had his arms all twisted up like a pretzel and scrunched up face. So, I walked up to him again but this time asked him whats wrong. He proceeded to walk away and say nothing. So I follow tripping over a few rocks
I walked into the Childhood Development Center at Saddleback College. I saw a receptionist and a student signing their name at the receptionist's desk. I stood behind the student waiting to sign my name. When the student left, I went up and signed my name on the date of Friday 09/08/2017 and time 8:00 am. After I signed my name, the receptionist guided me into a room called red. When I walked into the red room, the first thing that caught my eyes was kids playing and talking. I was really intrigued to see how they were really enjoying. In the red room, I saw many different stations of activities that kids could do. For example, there was a train station, building block station, play-dough station, and etc. I also saw small tables with chairs, forks, and spoons, where kids can eat. Not only that but a playground outside as well. The whole atmosphere of the room was great. Kids were seen all over different stations playing around. Other kids were walking in the room with their parents. One kid I observed was reading a book. He was a short boy, who was about the age of three. He had small black hair and almond-shaped eyes. He was wearing a yellow shirt and black shorts. The second kid I observed was playing around. He was a short boy, who was four years old. This boy had spiky brown hair and big round eyes. He wore a red shirt with trucks on it and a blue pant. After an hour, the instructor decided to go into another room and the next room I was in was called blue. The blue
Upon arrival we were informed that it was a student free day and staff will be attending meetings throughout the day taking several breaks. I was then assigned to a teacher who I'll be helping throughout the week within the classroom. While teachers attended meetings I was instructed to laminate various sheets of paper as well as cut the laminated sheets. After that I helped file students folders in the two 1/2 classes in alphabetical order. Due to the School I was visiting it is also my primary school as well as where my mother works, so introductions and a tour was not required. Due to the familiar environment and teachers present I felt more comfortable and capable to be
From the kid’s perspective, I agree that they may have acted this way because their parents haven’t taught them well about this issue. However, I question myself for the way I reacted to this issue because I feel that I should have put more effort in helping the situation. At that time, I feel like I should have talk to the kids about what they did wrong. However, at that time I feared that if I teach the kids, I would not have the power as a teacher to make them listen to me because I only worked there for a few days. I agree that telling the teacher would be one of the best ways to solve it but
Jayleen is a 4-year-old who constantly likes to volunteer. She is a child who loves to stop by the office to say hi before class starts and who loves to say bye before she heads home. It has now become a habit that the office staff has now become use too, she is expected. The child is no longer a stranger she is one well behaved student. When I arrived at the classroom the children were given the option to choose an activity they wished to do. Jayleen decided to
I was really excited to be observing in a Pre K classroom. I want to teach Kindergarten so I hoped that this would be an eye opener into an elementary school classroom setting. Initially going into observation, I was nervous about how the children would respond to me sitting down and writing down some things. I knew that I could treat this as if it was a regular day in my own classroom. The only difference is that I would not be teaching. I was really excited that upon my first visit, the children responded to me well, asking my name and if I was a teacher. The teacher introduced me as teacher which was also really exciting. By the time I had conducted my third visit and observation, the nerves had gone away and I looked forward to going. The children knew my name and often wanted me to sit with them during large group times such as circle time and reading time.
I entered the classroom of Mrs. Green promptly at 7:55am right before the 8:00am bell. I adored Mrs. Green and her classroom, it always looked extremely organized and smelled like freshly sharpened pencils. “Good Morning,” said Mrs. Green, “today we will be getting a new student in our class. He will be coming shortly.” Suddenly, each one of my classmates’ faces became overwhelmed with eagerness and curiosity about the new student. After waiting anxiously for thirty minutes, the principal came into our classroom and said, “Good morning boys and girls. This is your new classmate Jonathan! He is not new to this school but he is new to your class, so remember to be kind to him. Have a great day.” After that quick introduction she left and Jonathan looked for a desk to sit at. The only open desk left in the classroom happened to be right next to me. Most of the day Jonathan and I did not talk to each other, but at recess all of that
Jackie introduced me to each of the staff and explained their roles. In addition, I explained to them how and why I had arrived at Grandma’s Place. Essentially, the staff greeted me with a “hello” and a friendly smile. Indeed, the staff was very welcoming. Moreover, Ms. Jackie also introduced me to the children by telling me there names as she showed me around the place. In addition, she let the children know that I would be a new volunteer at Grandma’s Place. While introducing the children, she also informed me of those who were special needs. By these behaviors, I could tell that Grandma’s Place was an environment where values such as kindness, respect, positive attitude, professionalism, acceptance, and an over passion for excellence were
For the last month, I have been volunteering at St. Francis Xavier for my Child Psychology and Development class. I have been volunteering in Ms. Kulander’s first-grade class that consists of 19 children; each between six to seven years of age. The scheduled classroom time is from 8:30 am to 9:50 am. I have the chance to observe these first graders the whole time and learn many things about them. The physical environment of the classroom I am volunteering in is very school appropriate and inviting. When I walk through the door, there is a cabinet and sink in the left corner, and if one would continue down the left wall, there is a clock and white board. After I walk through the door, to the right, the teacher's desk is in the corner and right
