The media are bias mainly because news sources all have their own political agendas they’re trying to push. There are Republican news sources and Democratic news sources that people watch to gather information they want to hear. Although the information given out can be true, it can be one-sided as well and not show all viewpoints to a story. The media have been bias for a while and will continue to be biased because the media wants the audience to have the same beliefs as them. In a video from Stossel in the Classroom, Are You A Biased TV Viewer?, Bernie Goldberg, a CBS insider, explains that there is biased in the media and it is mostly liberal. It has a tremendous power in framing cultural guidelines and shaping political dissertation. If the information provided to the U.S. citizens is distorted, then they cannot make informed decisions on the matters of public policy. Thus, it becomes vital to the American democracy that the news media and its institutions remain unbiased, fair and accurate. A liberal is a person that believes that the government should provide equality for all, while a conservative is a person that believes in limited government and that the government should provide the necessary freedom for people to pursue their own goals. Over time, it has been argued, mostly by conservatives, that there is a liberal bias in the media. Liberals have combated this idea with the belief that conservative media is devoted to making efforts to invoke fear and division in the general public. Though liberals make a fine counter-argument, it is easier to observe that the media is liberal-biased. The liberal versus conservative debate can be compared to facts versus values. Another reason for bias within the media is that a significant percentage of minorities, or smaller groups within the population that are often thought to be poorer, politically identify themselves as liberals. To make these minorities feel like the government is on their side as well as everyone else’s, the media must accommodate the needs of these minorities. Because of this, the media becomes liberal-biased.

The topic I’ll be discussing will be the biasedness in media about a particular topic, the US Supreme Court’s decision on the case of Alexander vs. Holmes County Board of Education. The case involved a previous Supreme Court ruling of Brown vs. Board of Education, where they gave schools to desegregate public schools “with all deliberate speed.” 15 years passed and school districts were still segregated, so the courts gave them till the beginning of the next year, 1970. This gave some schools a very abrupt shock as they had to conform to the decision. As something that opinionated, it allows news media to explore and write about such a topic.

Media bias refers to the bias of news producers and journalists that are in the mass media, reporting on a selection of events and stories and how they are covered. It is impossible to report everything, therefore, selectivity is inevitable. When watching or reading coverage on a specific topic, it is not difficult to detect the sources bias. The media will put their conservative or liberal spin on the information presented to their audience. This has been very obvious in recent days regarding the laws being presented to the Supreme Court regarding same-sex marriages. The coverage on this topic is either for or against same-sex marriage. The New York Times has a more liberal view, marriage is the union of people who love each other, regardless of their sexual orientation have the right to marry. However, CNN’s reporting is that of a conservative bias, marriage is the union of one man and one woman, same-sex relationships violates moral and religious beliefs of millions. According to the Pew Research Center, stories with more statements supporting same-sex marriage outweighed those with more statements opposing it by a margin of roughly 5-to-1. The news media coverage provided a strong sense of momentum towards legalizing same-sex marriage. When reading through articles from The New York Times and CNN, their bias is apparent through omission, source selection, story selection, placement, and spin.

Media bias is defined as “the perception that the media is reporting the news in a partial or prejudiced manner” (Dugger). This kind of bias can be observed everywhere and in every kind of situation. American people get almost all of their information from popular news outlets or some other form of media. The media is often guilty for taking advantage of their power and covering stories with a certain political bias. This is obviously an enormous problem. Media outlets have the power to voice opinions for the masses of followers they may have. Depending on the topic, media typically has 2 different standpoints but there is always room for another. Three standpoints typically become more common when burning topics come to light. Using the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals as an example better known as DACA, I found articles that were mainly targeted towards either Republican, Liberal, or Neutral parties. The articles were debriefing the controversy around the elimination of DACA. The republican media outlets such as Fox News portrays in favor of the wrongdoing of being illegal. To understand what state the modern media system is in, one must firmly understand what bias is. If a political station provides positive or accurate information to only one side, then the station can be considered biased. Another form of bias is known as sensationalism. Sensationalism is the creation of panic or fear by over-reporting or over-inflating individual news stories, often blurring facts or reporting speculation as facts. (2010) notes that “program monitoring is a basic form of program evaluation … and starts with examining a program specifics goals and objectives and comparing with data” (p.121). Evaluating the program will help to determine the outcomes of the program and measure whether the program meet those objectives or if there are any improvements needed to make the program thrive. It is important to examine whether DACA is serving the population of people it is intended to serve.
