What is a hero? In the article What Makes A Hero by: Alex Lickerman the author defines a hero as “‘…It's the willingness to make a personal sacrifice for the benefit of others.’ ” In the book The Outsiders by: S.E. Hinton, Dally is portrayed as a hero, when he saves his fellow greaser members. Dally is a hero because he stands by his fellow greaser members.
Dally saved Johnny from the church fire. Johnny and Ponyboy were helping get the kids out of the burning church, when the roof caved in, so Johnny threw Ponyboy out of the window. Johnny was then hit by a piece of timber from the roof and fell. Dally ran into the church and pulled Johnny out. “‘He burned one arm pretty badly, though, trying to drag the other kid out the window…' “ Dally saved Johnny out of selflessness.
Dally told Johnny and Ponyboy what to do after the murder. He instructed them to, “‘Hop the three-fifteen freight to Windrixville.’“ Dally knew of a church in Windrixville that the boys could stay low in for a while until it was safe. He accommodated them with a few supplies, “…He handed us a gun and a roll of bills.” He provided them with some supplies to take with them because he cared about them and wanted to them safe and out of trouble. Dally is a hero because he helped Johnny and Ponyboy from getting in trouble.

This shows Dally is a hero because he covered for his friend, “‘They was gettin' him for breakin' out the windows in the school building, and it was Two-Bit who did that. And Dally knew it.’” Dally didn’t want Two-Bit to get in trouble, so he took the blame for it instead. This demonstrates that Dally sacrificed himself to keep his friend out of trouble, “’But he just took the sentence without battin' an eye or even denyin' it.’” Dally covered for his friend Two-Bit because he cares about him. Dally’s personal sacrifice makes him a hero because he put someone else before
A hero is someone that shows courage and bravery and is admired for their actions. Sometimes, a hero is someone unexpected and would never have been thought to be a hero by anyone because of who they are, or what and where they come from. One example of unexpected heroism, is from three greasers, Dallas Winston, Johnny Cade, and Ponyboy Curtis from The Outsiders. Dally, Johnny, and Ponyboy can be considered heroes because of some actions and choices they made.
But once he sees Johnny it gives him something to love and care about. He made sure that Johnny didn’t become violent. He says in the book multiple times he cares about Johnny he said “Johnny…I just don’t want you to get hurt.” A quote also says that “Johnny was the only thing that Dally loved. And now Johnny was gone.” Later in the book Johnny dies and it is too much for Dally and he gets himself killed. Dally was so distraught, he wanted to be dead.
The way in which Dally reacts to problems he’s given is weak and reckless. How he reacts to Johnny’s death is perfect example of how Dally can’t deal with any problem headed his way. When Johnny dies, Dally can’t handle his grief, so he attempts to rob a store, leading to his eventual demise. If Dally was strong enough to handle Johnny dying, he never would’ve done something so reckless and get himself killed. Pony boy says that he “knew that was what Dally wanted.” (154) Dally is used to life of a criminal, and he knows better than to do what he did. He made the police believe that he had a loaded gun on purpose, not as a heat of the moment
Dally is a very important character in the novel, The Outsiders. Dally helps Ponyboy and Johnny after Johnny kills a soc. He hands them money, a gun, and a map. He also gives them advice on where to hide out. Dally is a character who always seems to be doing the wrong thing. He has been to jail numerous times for many different reasons. After Johnny dies, Dally decides to rob a store and pulls a gun so that the police will shoot him. The police shoot him down and Dally died before he even hit the ground. If Dally hadn’t died, some parts of the story could have changed, and some aspects of the story could have stayed the same.
First, Dally could be considered a hero. There are so many things he has done to prove he is a hero. Some quotes from the book can show ways he plays a hero in the book. “We think the towheaded kid will be okay. He burned his arm trying to get the other kid out.” said the teacher (pg.95). This happened after Dally went into the church to save Johnny. This quote is proof because it shows that Dally is willing to risk his life for
Dally was a hero for his actions and his help. After Johnny killed someone Ponyboy and Johnny went to go see Dally and asked “If he could help them hide so the police wouldn't find us.” Dally told them to “go to the abandoned church up on Jay Mountain.” Before they left he gave Pony a new shirt that was big, a gun to Johnny if he ever needed it, and some cash to buy supplies since they would half to stay there for a while. (Skipping to the part when the church was on fire) Dally also helped Johnny get out of the burning church when the church fell down and heard Johnny's screams. Dally risked his own life for Johnny’s. That's why he’s a
The author writes, “Johnny’s eyes glowed. Dally was proud of him. That was all Johnny had ever wanted” (148). Johnny’s reaction is priceless. Out of the entire greaser gang, Johnny and Dally’s relationship is the strongest and most significant. When Johnny needs Dally the most, he is his staunchest supporter. In return, Johnny gives back the same, if not more, amount of affection to Dally. When Dally and Johnny die, Ponyboy makes a list of realizations. Ponyboy thinks, “But I remembered Dally pulling Johnny through the window of the burning church; Dally giving us his gun, although it could mean jail for him; Dally risking his life for us, trying to keep Johnny out of trouble.” (154). It is clearly proven that ‘tough’ Dallas Winston makes a substantial effort to make Johnny’s life better. If Dally would not make the effort for Johnny, then Johnny would have to experience life worse than it already is. Since Dally thinks of Johnny almost like a little brother, it would hurt Dally to see Johnny experience that kind of pain. Dally and Johnny are bonded by these similarities, but they are also bonded through their differences.
In the book, Dally was hallmarked as a reckless thug, but he showed heroism by offering a plot and some supplies to Ponyboy and Johnny to protect them. He might not perfectly fit in my earlier definition of a hero, nevertheless he was is in the eyes of Johnny and Ponyboy in that glimpse. In addition, he dragged Johnny out of the fire and got burned in the process. Thus, he is a true hero.
If Dally had not died, Ponyboy might have been able to give Dally the message that Johnny had written for him shortly before his death. I believe then Dally would have new purpose in life and would want to live. He also could have been injured by the
Everyone in their own unique ways is a hero, some are just more prominent compared to others. Personally, a hero is someone who stops thinking of themselves and ameliorate the world on a small or large scale. Dally was the most prestigious heroic character of the book, he was even described gallant by Johnny and Ponyboy. Immediately after Johnny and Ponyboy are faced with murder, Dallas was the first name that came to mind. As expected, Dally was just what they needed to stay hidden and out of trouble. "Dally," Johnny said with finality. "Dally'll get us outs here.". Similarly, even with a hurt arm, Dally came to the rescue during the rumble. He was extremely loyal to the crew and wanted to be apart of taking down the Soc’s. When Ponyboy was
During the church fire, a falling timber hits Johnny, Dally runs in to save him, he runs into a collapsing building without any second thought, and risks his life to save Johnny. Dally a criminal who has had many run-ins with the law, yet when given the choice he become a hero by rescuing Johnny. Dally especially loves Johnny. After the Greasers won the rumble he rushed to the hospital to notify Johnny. Johnny didn’t try to grin at him “Useless... Fighting’s no good...” (page 126) a moment later, “the pillow seemed to sink in a little and Johnny died” (page 126). Dally rushed through the hallway, he packed an unloaded gun and took his car to rob a store and when the police showed up, he pulled out his unloaded gun and then he let himself get shot by the police because living without Johnny isn’t living. After, the impact of the bullet; there was a “grim triumph on his face” (page 186). Ponyboy utters “I knew that’s what he wanted” (page 186) he wanted to die because he lost Johnny, he was all he had living without Johnny was no living so it better to die. If Dally could die for someone in the way, I would consider him to be brave and a hero.
Now you may ask how could a greaser, a juvenile delinquent , and a troublemaker liked Dally be a hero? He was considered a hero because he saved Johnny, who was going to burn in the church. If it weren't for him Johnny would be dead even earlier. Dally was also put in the newspaper because he was heroic. He had a choice to leave Johnny but he decided that he would get Johnny out of the church.
A hero can be anyone your neighbor your friend or maybe even a stranger on the street. But to be a hero you must be someone who is kind, caring and risks his or her life for someone. Some heroes in the outsiders were Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally.
For instance, Johnny looked up to Dally in a revering way, almost as if Dally ishis brother, respecting him. Ponyboy explains that, “Johnny worshipped the ground Dally walked on” (25). This means that Dally was like an idol to Johnny. Likewise, Dally took care of Johnny like a little brother. When Johnny is running into the church, Dally can be heard screaming “‘Forget those blasted kids!’”(93), meaning that he valued Johnny’s life over a whole class of kids. When Johnny contemplates turning himself in, Darry starts shows his care for Johnny, “‘Johnny” Dally said in a pleading, high voice, using a tone I had never heard from him before, “Johnny, I ain’t mad at you. I just don't want you to get hurt. You don’t know what a few months in jail can do to you”’(20). Dally does not want Johnny to become like him, a hardened criminal. Johnny and Dally both share a sense of comradery, hence the fact that they are
In chapter 6 (Pg.81), Dally got questioned from the cops about where Johnny and Pony where, Dally said they were in texas; diverging the cops. If Dally instead said where Pony and Johnny actually were the entire plot would've changed and they would of gotten in major trouble and possibly even go to jail. Furthermore Dally was a hero to the both Johnny and Pony because he was the one who gave the materials and the plan they needed to hide out and being arrested. On page 61 Johnny and Pony go to the gasoline station, where Dallas works ands asks hims for money, a plans, and maybe a Gun. Dallas then gives the boys some shirts and jackets for them to keep warm when it gets cold, then tells them to hop onto the three-fifteen freight train to windrixville, buy a week’s supply of food and stay inside until he arrives. This is very heroic of him to give supply’s, money, and instructions of what to do, back then many people wouldn't do this type of thing and would just tell them to “get lost”, but Dally did not do that and decided to help them
