The History of Dan Gable
If you are, or ever were, a wrestler, could you imagine having a record of 181-1? Dan Gable did not have to imagine it, because that was his record. Throughout his high school, college and Olympic career, he only lost one match. Nate Kaeding expressed it perfectly when he said, “He has truly earned his place as the godfather of Iowa sports” (Wrestling Life). Dan Gable is the best, pure wrestling role model because of the amount of hard work and dedication he put into the sport and his drive to always be better. This is illustrated in his record as a high school and college wrestler, a coach, and in the Olympics as a wrestler and coach.

In the article, “Gable Dominated as a Wrestler and Coach”, the author, Mike Puma, talked about Gable: “In his first season, the Hawkeyes went 17-1-1 and finished third at the 1977 NCAA tournament. Gable was voted the NCAA’s Rookie Coach of the Year” (Gable Dominated). Between 1978 and 1986, Gable led his team as a coach to nine straight NCAA titles, and in twenty-one seasons as the head coach at Iowa State, he led them to fifteen titles. While Gable was a coach, Lou Banach, a wrestler of Gable’s, said “No one is a better motivator than Gable and that is a huge part of the success of Iowa wrestling” (WrestlingLife). Gable was not only a good coach because of this motivation, however. Because he was such a successful wrestler through high school, college, and the Olympics, his wrestlers had something to live up to. They were challenged every day to be better than he was. During Gable’s career as a coach, his teams lost more than one dual meet in a year only five times in his twenty-one years. He coached 152 All-Americans, 45 National Champions, 106 Big Ten Champions and twelve Olympians, including four gold, one silver and three bronze medalists (DanGable). The Hawkeyes won twenty-five consecutive Big Ten championships, twenty-one under Gable as head coach and four while he was an assistant coach and administrator (HawkeyeSports). At that time it tied the longest streak of national titles won by any school in any

Athletes are considered to be the biggest role models for children, which is why after considering various topics for my analysis I have chosen ‘Should there be harsher punishments for athletes if they commit a crime?”. I have chosen this, as it’s a major problem for the upcoming athletes of this generation. Children’s role models are committing crimes which then implies to the kids that its part of being an athlete to an extent. It also shows the children that the punishments aren’t that bad, therefore getting away with the crimes they are committing.
Wrestling is a hard sport. The coaches have become hard men, bodies beaten over the years as they transfer their love of the sport into their students as coaches. I have the significant memory of first seeing our head coach, the man I only knew as “Cox.” He walked with a limp and carrying a cane to keep him from

When Russell Wilson was drafted in the 3rd round 75 pick overall the Seattle Seahawks won a super bowl two years later with Russell Wilson being there quarterback. Russell Wilson isn’t only a star quarterback with the Seattle Seahawks he is also a role model outside the field of play Russell Wilson is a role model through his actions of visiting a children’s hospital every week, running a camp for kids to promote
No one worked harder than Dan Gable. That being said, Gable’s work ethic paid huge dividends on the wrestling mat in college. During Dan Gable’s era in college wrestling, the competitor was only allowed three years of eligibility. Dan took advantage of every single match he wrestled. He compiled a record of one hundred and seventeen wins and zero losses going into his finals match of the Division 1 NCAA tournament his senior year. Racking up two NCAA titles in his previous years. He was on the verge of history, no one in the sport up to that time had even come close to what Gable accomplished thus far in his career. He wrestled a competitor named Larry Owings from the University of Washington in the NCAA finals his senior year. Dan felt the pressure of this match because of the hype and history he was able to make if he won. Dan was not himself in his final match of his collegiate career and lost thirteen to eleven against Owings. “One of the mind-boggling things for me in my profession and in my life so far has been why, how, did I ever end up losing that last match in college? I say that because I feel like there’s no way I should’ve lost that match, and it shouldn’t have happened. But then I look at what that match did to me, and I’m not so sure that I would change that either, because that match, that loss, probably drove me – even though it shouldn’t have, a win should have done it – but I don’t think
Once, I was at softball practice and I was struggling when I was pitching. Then Mr. Jason told me to take a deep breath, relax and just try my best. I listened to his suggestions, and next thing you knew, I was pitching strikes. Mr. Jason Gossard had a huge impact on many people. He was such an outstanding person and coach and he had a huge impact on my life! Mr. Jason coached many other sports, he was my brother's baseball coach, he was a football coach and most importantly he was my softball coach. He’s has been friends with my mom and dad for a long time now. He has been my softball coach for many years. My role model is Mr. Jason Gossard because he was committed, selfless, funny, and he was always joyful!
Dan Gable was born on October 25th 1948 in Waterloo Iowa. He had a sister named Diana Gable. These two were very close. He was traumatized when she was raped and killed in her home while the family was away. He started wrestling when his swimming was almost over just so he could make his sister proud. He trained day in and day out to try to become undefeated. His senior wrestling career ended with 64-0, he was undefeated throughout the whole year. He was going on to be a College for Iowa. Dan’s motto was to wrestle with the toughest man in the room (Smith Russ 63). Gable won his first one hundred and seventeen matches and held a NCAA record before he lost during the NCAA finals his senior years to Larry Owings. This was one of his harder matches
Under his tutelage the Augsburg wrestling program turned into a national NCAA division-three powerhouse. Augsburg won ten wrestling national championship during his twenty-five-year coaching career. He served as head coach every year from 1980 until 2007 with the exception two years in the mid-eighties when he coached at Rosemount high school. One of the most interesting parts of the interview is when we discussed why he left for the two-year period at Rosemount. He stated he was unhappy about not receiving what was then the part-time Athletic Director position. Saying, “I was pissed.” You could tell while interviewing him that Jeff Swenson is undoubtable a highly competitive and motivated person. He was very candid throughout the interview and he exemplified a personality that was very direct and goal oriented. His ability to walk away from the success he had at Augsburg shows the natural ambition he has and why his wrestling teams have found so much success. Eventually, after the two-year stint at Rosemount he returned to Augsburg and continued racking up conference and national championships. Additionally, he clearly took great proud in the academic success of his wrestlers during his tenure. Eventually, in 2001, he was put in charge of overseeing the Athletic Department and in 2007 named to his current position as the full-time Athletic Director at Augsburg.
Meggyesy's coaches also treated athletes as machines because their concern for the well-being of athletes was only to the extent that they could contribute to their primary concern of winning games. For example, while Meggyesy was at Syracuse University, the primary concern of the coaches was to win a national
My valleys are higher than most people's peaks. I stay at that level.”- Dan Gable. Dan Gable was born on October 25, 1948 and is still a living legend to this day. Although there are many wrestlers in the world, nobody can compare to the wrestling career of Dan Gable through high school, college, internationally, and eventually on to coaching.
