Growing up in a small town called Lauderdale, MS, dancing has been a way for me to see more of the world. I use this artwork as a way to showcase my talents and escape my problems in life. Many people believe that dancing is easy but I think otherwise. In order to dance, a person must work hard, sacrifice time, and grow as a person. At the age of 9, I realized I wanted to dance after attending a dance competition in Memphis, TN. The energy and the passion the dancers showed had swayed me. Afterwards I talked to my mother about dancing and she fully supported me. My mom then enrolled me in dance classes and I learned different genres of dances, which included jazz, ballet, and hip-hop. These past 12 years, I have spent countless of
My whole life has been of dirty mirrors, old ballet shoes, and ripped tights. I was 5 years old and a beginner at a dance academy. I didn’t quite know what dance was when I got in, I thought it was just a place to spend time in and just enjoy the music they played. Over the years I learned that dance is way more than just a hobby or a place to go when you are bored. It is art, you are the one making art. Your feelings are the story to your dance, and your moves are the music. People will see your pain or happiness through these ways. Dance is not just a hobby, it’s an art, it’s something that you don’t actually have to throw music at when the steps and feelings you add are the music to your dance.
On Wednesday, November 18th, I had the pleasure to attend and watch the Dance Plus’s Fall show. The Dance Plus was performed at the Douglass Theatre, Victoria Mastrobuno Theater. When I entered the show the theatre seemed a little small for such big crowed. I immediately thought there would not be enough seats for all the audience, but somehow it fitted everyone. As everyone got settled down, the dance performance had started. I chose to write about the first performance that was choreographed by the amazing director, Jessica Lange her work was simply wonderful! I loved every little piece of the play. It put a smile on my face watching this amazing work of art. So with that said, I would now like to talk about the dance performance. There were
Whenever I walk into the dance studio at my high school, there is always a certain smell. There is always a slight smell of sweat, passion and a hint of baby powder. Sweat for working hard, passion for loving what they are doing and baby powder to help with turning.
One of the first famous Hip Hop Deejays was Dj Kool Herc. He was an 18 year old Jamaican immigrant who introduced huge sound systems of Jamaica to many parties in the city of New York. He used two turn tables to blend percussion based beats with older songs and popular dance songs to create a continuous flow of music. Along with Kool Herc other Deejays such as Grand Wizard Theodore, Afrika Bambaataa, and Grandmaster Flash. These Deejays were also known for being the first to isolate the break beat (the part of the song where there is just drums keeping the beat) to open up the dance floor freestyle dancing. This later gained its title Break Dancing. Often time’s contests were started to see who the best Break Dancer was. This style of dancing
Many people say that dance is something very easy. I have been told many times that dance is extremely easy and they don't know why we make such a big deal over it. If dance were easy everyone could do it! It takes skills, choreography, and nerve.
As a young child, I was raised in a loving Christian home and accepted Jesus in to my heart as my Lord and Savior. I had always enjoyed dancing and leaping across my living room floor to popular songs of the “Jackson 5” and “James Brown” albums. I told myself I would be a dancer when I grew up.
I was excited. My mom and I were going to get my dance clothes for my first dance class. When we arrived at Releve the dance store my heart was pulsing heavily under my chest. We went in and got me my tap shoes, my white shoes, and my long black pants.
Dance is an art form that takes strength, emotional execution, endurance, discipline, and commitment. “Lengthen your extension for a longer line!”, “Point your toes, it engages all your leg muscles”, “Get higher in that grand jetè!” All sentences that a dancer hears on a regular basis. One sentence that a dancer never wants to hear is: “It’s looking like you will need to have surgery”, which is what I was told at the age of thirteen, causing foreseen conflict in my dance training.

During the Halloween weekend, Dance Mastery was invited to The Young Dancer's Workshop in Gainesville for their ninth year in a row. They are, in fact, one of the youngest groups to attend. The Young Dancers Workshop includes a series of workshops. In addition, they get to perform a dance in front of all the other parents, teachers, and students. This year, the piece they did was called "Black Pourings," which is inspired by the artist Jackson Pollock because his works are paint splattered on canvas, and it looks like it is dancing. Dance Mastery collaborated with Art Mastery for the costumes. Art Mastery made the costumes with the same technique as Pollock.
I played a season of soccer when I was three years old, well, the other kids played soccer, and I entertained the audience with leaps and turns and prancing along the field. After the season, my aunt took me off the field and into the studio. I remember watching through the window, my cousin taking pointe class. I wanted other people to watch me like I was watching my cousin and to feel that same sense of joy and wonder. Now, fourteen years later, dancing gives me just as much pure joy as it did on the soccer field, and watching others dance makes me ohh and ahh like the three year old me.
Dance to me is a form of self reflection ,expression and gateway communicate a message to an audience. I consider it my best form of communicating. Being raised as a black Roman Catholic from New Orleans, that heavy influence my lifestyle and dance choices. I often found myself using this creative process to express those ideas that have sculpted me to be the person I am. In result of that many of my pieces was influenced and moral choices. For example, the experience of growing up and living in New Orleans has many ways inspired me to create pieces that often reflected the change I wanted to seeing the community. The effect of Katrina, violence and living in relatively “hard city”, I wanted to incorporate how I can be voice for the city.
Tap dancing originated with African dancers in early America. This style of dance is created when a dancer wearing shoes fitted with heel and toe with metal plates brushes their feet across the floor or any hard surface. In the mid to late 1800’s tap dancing competitions were a common form of entertainment. Tap dancing is known as an artistic and social form of dance. Tap is ritual as it became a fusion of several ethnic percussive dances of those who lived in this area, primarily African tribal dances and Scottish, Irish, and English clog dances, hornpipes, and jigs. Tap is social as most tap dancers perform in competitions with hard choreography which other may find hard to pick up. Tap dancing is a type of dance which makes sounds by chugging,

What qualities are looked for in a professional dancer? Perhaps some people look for a dancer who is simply talented. Talent is an important quality in a dancer because if a dancer is unable to set themselves apart based on their talent, it is impossible for them to become discovered in the industry. Some people think a dancer has to also be smart and able to apply corrections and memorize choreography efficiently. Without this, the talent of a dancer is wasted. In order to be a competitor, a dancer must be close to perfect, which comes with applying corrections given to them by a judge. Another quality looked for could be the dancer’s professionalism, or how well the dancer works with other dancers. As a dancer, you work with many different dancers and choreographers. A dancer needs to be able to be professional and friendly while working with others. If a dancer is unable to work with other dancers, the group dances will fail, and if a dancer is unable to work with a choreographer they can not efficiently learn the choreography. As Dance Magazine’s nominee for Dancer of the Year, Maddie Ziegler exhibits the following praiseworthy traits: success, personality, and versatility.
