Since being founded in 1920; watching football teams competing in the National Football League has quickly became a favorite pastime for Americans across the country. For thousands of kids who begin playing football at a young age those Sunday games represent the dream job they hope to one day have. Each kid who excels in running, blocking, kicking or defending holds on to the hope; regardless of the odds, of one day becoming a professional football player in the NFL. Unfortunately, with all that is glorified in football; it has only been in recent years that some major drawbacks have been identified. Though some consider playing high school football a; “rites of passage,” for young men transitioning into adulthood, there have been recent studies completed that have found that participating in tackle football can have a negative impact on adolescents playing football in high school. These issues include; long term brain injuries; academic absences due to injuries received on the field and an increase in shared illnesses due to players sharing water bottles and equipment.

As the years passed, American Football has seen an exponential progression, including the introduction of children’s football associations. While there is a numerous group of parents who have no problem with their child being involved in football, recent revelations would begin to grow concern in some. It is because of this we must ask, should parents disallow their children from participating in football, or should they focus on the more positive benefits that the organized sport could have?

It was a bright, sunny, hot day at the end of august. Our football team had an amazing offensive line as we were stacked with linemen each exceeding over 200 pounds. There were many pressures on us to be a very good team and they pushed us all very hard to be the best. Practice five days a week with lifting on the other two days, no days off was our motto! Over the past several years, there has been an enormous amount of news, covering all the extreme health risks of playing football. The studies have become increasingly fact-based, and almost completely irrefutable. High school, College, and the National Football League are all three major groups that have been taking large amounts of criticism over brain trauma caused from repeated injuries to the head, by football. For some people, the health threats far outweigh the benefits, for others, they would prefer to ‘‘die out on the field’’. You may be asking yourself, why do these players put their body and health on the line, despite all the research covering the dangers of playing this extreme sport? I believe football players play simply because of their love for the game. I also think they believe they owe it to themselves, their teammates, their family, and even the fans, despite the damage they are inflicting on their brains and bodies.

High school sports come with a number of risks that students take as an athlete. However, none of them are as transparent as those that come with football. Because of the risk of traumatic brain injury, there is no doubt that football should be banned from high school sports. This is because of the apparent hazards of playing for an extended period of your life, the dangers of CTE, and the careers and lives ended by improper safety.
